... ty is not normal behavior. Homosexual activists are asking us to normalize strange behavior, even though, by definition, it just can't be done. And we are being asked to believe that same-sex marriages will bring every group in society closer together.

Ah yes, and we will all go off into the sunset with birds singing, with no more wars and no more hatred, because homosexual couples can now marry each other. Isn't the traditional view of marriage religious in nature? And if so, doesn't the restriction of marriage to one man and one woman violate the religious beliefs of those who disagree? Although marriage does descend from religious customs, most notably the Bible, it is an autonomously proven good for society (Knight). Hence, the state has an interest in conserving the special reputation of marriage, in spite of religious beliefs.

A society can get along just fine without any homosexuality, but no society can get along without marriage. That is why the state encourages marriage. In 1885, the Supreme Court felt so strongly that marriage was to be protected that it confirmed it as a constraint for entrance of new states to the Union. Any forthcoming state, the court said, had to have law resting on the basis of the idea of the family, as consisting in and springing from the union for life of one man and one woman in the holy estate of matrimony; the sure foundation of all that is stable and noble in our civilization, the best guaranty of that reverent morality which is the source of all beneficent progress in social and political improvement (Murphy v. Ramsey 1885). There is a sound foundation for blocking gay marriage and it does not totally depend upon an indistinct or religiously based censure of homosexuality.

Children need the unwavering family atmosphere provided by marriage. In our nonconformist Western society, marriage must be companionate and therefore monogamous. Monogamy will be destabilized by gay marriage itself, and by gay marriage's accompanying of polygamy and polyamory (Kurtz). What about childless couples? Since you say that marriage must be protected partly because of its importance in forming families, does this mean that heterosexual couples who do not have children shouldn't get marriage licenses? Although most people marry with the objective of someday starting families, the married couples who do not have children still have the aptitude for becoming mothers and fathers, either organically or through implementation.

Marriage is a collective good even without children, as husbands and wives serve as role models for children in their locality (Knight). Procreation is a significant facet of society's high esteem for marriage, but it is not the only reason marriage is protected. Children do not profit when homosexuality is untaxed as a neutral or positive lifestyle choice. Even childless marriages protect this rationale by ensuring that, as long as the marriage exists, neither the childless husband nor the childless wife is likely to father or mother children outside of wedlock (Gallagher). What about adoption?

If the state allows homosexuals to marry, it can scarcely discriminate against them when it comes to adoption. Would it be pleasing to have substantial figures of children raised by homosexual couples? The popular answer is that love solves everything. As long as a child gets love, what does it matter whether it comes from two moms or two dads? We are learning from the pandemic of divorce and illegitimacy just how imperative it is to grow up with one parent of each sex. Girls without fathers are far more likely than those who grow up with both parents to get pregnant, have illegitimate children, have trouble in school and have difficulty materializing lasting relationships.

Boys who grow up with a mother alone are more likely to have trouble in school, break the law, experiment with drugs and commit suicide than those who grow up with both parents (Zweibel). Men and women supply unique things as parents. Mothers tend to be more protective and nurturing; fathers more playful and challenging. Mothers say, Be careful on that jungle gym. Fathers say, How high can you go?" Fathers give daughters a sense of charm and poise. Mothers show their sons how to treat a lady.

Mothers teach girls how to become women. Fathers show boys what it means to be a man. But with the threat of AIDS and other diseases among promiscuous, homosexual men, wouldn't it be a societal good to encourage homosexual monogamy? In cities where homosexual monogamy is already being encouraged, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases are soaring (Centers for Disease Control).

It is not homophobia that is causing this, but the behavior itself, which is disparaging emotionally, physically and morally to persons, families and communities. That is why it has been disheartened in all flourishing cultures. Socrates and Plato wrote that homosexuality was damaging to individuals and society and should be discouraged. Even in steady homosexual relationships, risky sex occurs, since the defining homosexual sex act is demonstrably injurious by any standard (Knight). State approval of homosexuality in any form is a temptation to the young to experiment with something that may prove deadly.

Any public health benefits available by discouraging promiscuous or loose homosexual activity can be achieved without redefining traditional marriage, which is per se a deeply important public health degree. Most homosexual relationships are short-lived. Those that persist more than a few years do so because of an understanding to have outside partners. As former New Republic editor Andrew Sullivan, a homosexual, writes in his book Virtually Normal, the openness of the contract of homosexual marriage reflects greater understanding of the need for extramarital outlets between two men than between a man and a woman. In other words, the homosexual perception of monogamy is non-monogamous.

Homosexual activist Michelangelo Signorile forthrightly admits that the goal of homosexual activists is to fight for gay marriage and its benefits and then, once granted, redefine the institution of marriage completely, to demand the right to marry not as a way of adhering to society's moral codes but rather to debunk a myth and radically alter an archaic institution (Out 161). Furthermore, the conservative case for gay marriage holds that state-sanctioned marriage will diminish gay male promiscuity. But what if the effect works in reverse? What if, instead of marriage reducing gay promiscuity, sexually open gay couples help redefine marriage as a non-monogamous institution? There is evidence that this is exactly what will happen. Consider sociologist Gretchen Stiers's 1998 study From This Day Forward (Stiers favors gay marriage, and calls herself a lesbian queer theorist).
