During recent years, teenage girls have been put into the media spot light regarding their physical appearance. One main issue that has hit many magazines is for young girls to concentrate on how much one ought to weigh and what should be considered as a normal weight for teenagers between the ages of 13 to 18. Who is responsible for the weight loss? Is it the media, parents and peer pressure or is it the generation we live in? Young women are bombarded by ideas of beauty, states Susan Sawyer, Centre for Adolescent health, Dolly magazine, August 2006. Dieting to the extreme amongst teenagers nowadays is considered to be normal as it is seen on television shows such as the Biggest loser.

To make the matter more complicated, many teenagers look up to stars such as Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie. These two stars in the eyes of many are shown to be fashion icons as they are skinny and have the perfect body image. The article represents teenagers as self obsessive and isolated from what they should be enjoying rather than worrying about their weight. Girls obsessed with weight are not fun to be around. This article indicates that the media has some impact on how adolescents think and act about their weight and body image. In the US theyve turned competitive dieting into a reality show.

This article provides evidence that girls are dissatisfied with their bodies due to reality television shows which promote weight loss and plastic surgery as a normal and everyday way of life. This article does not use humour to ridicule the issue of dieting or other forms of weight loss. Without the use of humour, the message comes across to the reader as a serious matter that should be dealt with in a proper manner. The heading of the article, Competitive dieting whos the thinnest of them all, makes dieting sound like a game that is played amongst primary school children. The word thinnest is put up in big writing and in a different font colour to attract the reader. The values, attitudes, and beliefs underpinning this article emphasize the fact that our society is accustomed to losing weight and willing to do anything to fit into different social status groups.

They see girls in magazines and on TV who have perfect bodies and they want that. States Ingrid And as she reflects on her high school life and how she was like many other girls wanting to have a body of a model. While the article itself may not be very appealing to adolescents with eating disorders, the personal anecdotes show a more serious side to dieting and what it could do to your body. The personal anecdotes within the article show the reader first hand, the effects of dieting.

Anecdotes are used with emotion as the readers feel that the victims of excessive dieting regret their actions. Statistics help back up the article by stating that, on any given day in Australia, about 40 % of girls are on a diet. This article also claims that even girls who diet moderately have chances of developing an eating disorder in the future. The image which takes up more than half of the page portrays what teenage girls are hoping to achieve by dieting to the extreme. The image of Barbie naked with a tape measure around her waist tells the audience that many girls see it as a normal thing to walk down the road and see girls with a perfect figure.

A perfect body in the eyes of many would include big bust, small waist, flawless skin and overall an unrealistic image. If the illustration was not used in this article it would not have the same effect on the reader. Without the illustration, the reader would not be able to picture what type of body image teenage girls are hoping to achieve by excessive dieting. This article makes the reader feel sympathetic towards the victims of eating disorders but at the same time gives an insight into some of the key issues related to dieting. Likewise, the article Help your Teens Battle Image Issues by an unknown author, ABC news web states that there were also cultural differences in body image and wanting to lose weight for a particular reason.

The article alleged that a survey that was conducted displayed the percentage of black girls to the percentage of white girls who were satisfied with their bodies had a considerable gap. 51 % of black girls were totally satisfied with their bodies while only 31 % of white girls were satisfied with their body image. The language that is used in this text make the readers feel that adolescents are put under too much pressure by different aspects of their lives. This is comprehended through the single words and sentences throughout the article. Sentences such as pressure to diet came from parents and movie stars make them the most insecure about their bodies; portrays both parents and the media as main issues behind dramatic weight loss stories. Personal anecdotes are not used in this particular article; although there are statements by younger teenage girls who claim that being skinny would help them with having more friends, boyfriends and just being more happy and satisfied. This article, unlike the previous one, does not blame the media for the image issues that have a hold on many teenage girls all over the world.

This article may not be appealing to parents as they are put into the spotlight and are blamed for pressuring their children to lose weight. Readers are not provided with the viewpoint of teenagers who have suffered from excessive dieting or from professionals that specialise in adolescent health. In saying that, the article does present the reader with statistics from a survey conducted on adolescents between the ages of 13 to 18. Amy Barnett who is the managing director of Teen People believes that parents project their own issues on their children rather than encouraging self acceptance. This is suggested through the survey that 1500 girls participated in; of which 28 % placed their parents responsible for pressuring them to lose weight. The values, attitudes and beliefs, of teenage girls in this text is that they should be skinny as that is the only way that they would be accepted into peer groups and in the society in general.

According to the article How I beat my food obsession Dolly, December 2004, dieting and eating disorders are not caused by the media, parents or friends. This article is an anecdote of a girl who suffered from an eating disorder and believes that eating disorders are caused by broken spirit. Somewhere along the line, something has damaged that person so they believe they are not worth anything. This article represents adolescents as normal teenagers but at the same time they are seen as trying to find some way of coping with stress and personal problems, I used eating as a way of coping with my feelings.

Humour is not used in this text although there are phrases in the article which help with the understanding of how eating disorders are prevented. To say someone will develop an eating disorder because they see skinny models in magazines is stupid and insulting to people with eating disorders. Its like saying that you get depression from missing the bus. This article uses language that is comprehensible to teenagers. The heading of the article is big and bold with yellow font colour which makes is eye catching and appealing to the reader.

Apart from that the yellow font catches the readers attention as blissful instead of miserable. The article itself is set out to be a success story which is aimed at adolescents which have the same problem, an eating disorder. As awkward as it may sound, the personal anecdote is very comforting to those with the same problem. The article itself does not put down teenagers unlike the previous two. This is because readers are not provided with the viewpoint of a professional but that of a victim of an eating disorder.

This article is targeted towards teenagers between the ages of 13 to 18 and to those who have eating disorders or know of someone that does. The article also structures in the mind of the reader step by step on what happens to those with an eating disorder and how they feel and make others around them feel. The values, attitudes and beliefs of this article are that teenagers dont look up to models and believe that they should have the same body as them. This article believes that adolescents value their lives and that eating disorders are created in a bid to help them cope with their everyday problems. Unlike other articles which are written about eating disorders involving teenagers, this article is not biased and provides a viewpoint of someone who has been through an eating disorder. Eating disorders should be dealt with carefully and not in a manner in which someone with the illness feels as though they are a nuisance.

There may be many factors which cause eating disorders. Although the real cause of an eating disorder varies from one case to another, one thing is for certain, people who have an eating disorder need help from loved ones such as friends and families. No one should ever be put down just because of their weight or physical appearance since everyone is different, people should learn to accept each other.
