King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile were both important rulers during the Renaissance. They both ruled during a time in which change was constant. Things were being rediscovered and improved to become more efficient. These two rulers also partook in this movement for change. They improved their country in several ways, including the establishment of justice, and regulation of trade. These things improved their country dramatically, opening it up to endless possibilities of growth, which emulates what the Renaissance was all about.

The rule prior to Ferdinand and Isabella lacked strength, leaving them with a lot of work. The first point of emphasis they focused on was establishing justice, and reforming laws in a country that was at a stage of anarchy. There were laws in Spain but there was no one to enforce them. Ferdinand and Isabella appointed two thousand men, forming a national police force, to rid the country of chaos. These police were more like a military, and they successfully ended the reign of criminals across the countryside (Blacker 53). These rulers were so effective because they sought out their orders themselves, instead of passing them on to others.

This method proved quite effective for them. Ferdinand and Isabella were rulers of the people. When the people became upset, they would listen with open ears. At one point a mob of people came near her home to protest an injustice that occurred. Isabella heard the concerns of her people, about a powerful mans decision, and was not hesitant in acting upon them. Those who were influential would not hinder justice under the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella.

They stood for what was right and would not allow it to be compromised (Blacker 55). The intention to establish justice was somewhat lost in a well-known phase of their reign, called the Spanish Inquisition. Isabella was a devout Catholic that had no tolerance for non-believers. Most people were of the Catholic denomination but there were two groups that were not, the Moors and the Jews. The Jews were very important to Spain. They were hard workers and made up most of the middle class.

They flourished in occupations such as doctors and lawyers. These Jewish people had ties with the hierarchy of Spain. They were often involved with the rule of nobles and donated money to fund exploration and armies. Isabella tormented some of these people by cruel and unusual punishment for their beliefs, until she made a countrywide decree all Jews unless they were baptized. Failure to do so would result in inhumane punishment, expulsion, or death. Many, refused and suffered the horrible consequences, but others were forced to flee to the safety of neighboring countries (Brooks 3).

Over four hundred thousand Jews were killed, burnt by the stake, or disfigured for life; and two hundred thousand were forced out of Spain. These acts awarded Isabella and Ferdinand the title Catholic Monarchs by the Pope. The effects of the Inquisition were not only felt by the Jews, but also by the rest of Spain. These productive citizens were now gone and as a repercussion the economy suffered greatly (Canning 371). The next victims of these horrific events were the Moors.

The Moors were strong in combat and hard to defeat. Spanish success was due to the invention of the cannon. The Spanish conquered the Moorish cities and the people residing there were enslaved. The final city to fall was their capitol of Granada. The Spanish used a military tactic known as siege. They were successful and the Moors surrendered to the Spaniards.

The process of the Spanish Inquisition lasted ten years, and the rulers acting in the name of God triumphed in their success. This invent led to the reformation church thinking. This event was more destructive to the Renaissance than helpful because the concepts of the Inquisition were contrary to that Renaissance. The Renaissance promoted knowledge and civilization but there was nothing civilized nor knowledgeable about the Inquisition. But Church thinking would later be reformed as a positive result of the Inquisition.

The church later took a view that non-believers are Gods people too, which doesnt make lesser than us. The regulation of trade was lacking during the beginning of their reign. This resulted from the previous weak rulers. Counterfeiting was common in Spain, which discouraged others to trade for money, due to lack of confidence in coined money. The status of trade was low at this time period, but the new rulers fixed it. Ferdinand and Isabella made acts that set standards and values for the coins, which resulted in a new monetary system.

The reformation of coins awakened a sleeping economy. The lifestyle of the people improved, they were making money and so was the government. The debts Spain had now could be paid off (Blacker 71). The internal trade of Spain was now stable, and the next step that Ferdinand and Isabella took was global trade. The quest for a new and more efficient way of reaching the Indies was a main focus for Europe at this time.

The Indies had many desired spices that were very expensive due to the cost of transportation. Christopher Columbus had a solution for this problem, simply sailing west in order to reach the east. This would be simple if the world was round, but at this time it was believed that the world was flat. Columbus had tried to persuade many people to help fund his voyage but he was continually rejected. He decided to try Ferdinand and Isabella, and their first impression was not promising either. Over time, Ferdinand and Isabella finally agreed to the request of Christopher Columbus.

Columbus set out on his voyage in the name of Spain, but Spain was not the only country that would be affected by his journey, the world was. Columbus failed his mission, but also succeeded. He discovered a new land that was previously unheard of and proved the theory that the world was round. Ferdinand and Isabella changed trade and the world forever by funding this voyage, because of their willingness to explore new things and listen to new ideas (Shubert 92).

The Renaissance was one of the most important time periods in the history of the world. Growth and discovery were main focuses of the movement. The rule of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella allowed for Spain to prosper in many ways. Their actions made Spain grow in wealth, power, trade, and socially through the administration of justice.

These two rulers were the definition of Renaissance, and provided the leadership, that sustained the movement.
