Marilyn Monroe made a definite impact on todays society. For some it was good, for others, bad. She set high standards for herself and was an inspiration to many young people. Many are expected to be like her, some are forced unwillingly and others force themselves. Marilyn Monroe changed Hollywood's outlook on women forever.

Her image, body, smile, and personality are what is looked for in a young actress or any new models today. Now, because of Marilyn's high standards, it is much more complicated for women to make it big as an actress or model. She was more than just a superstar or glamour queen, Marilyn Monroe was a global sensation in her lifetime. On June 1 st, 1926 a star was born. Norma Jeane Mortenson, later known as Marilyn Monroe, was born in Los Angela's, California on that beautiful summer day.

After she was born, her mother changed Norma Jeane's last name to her own Baker. Norma Jeane did not know much of her family. She had her mother, Gladys Baker, for a little while in her life, until she was committed to a mental institution early in 1932. Until 1937, when Norma Jeane moved in with her mothers friend, Grace McKee Goddard and her husband, she was in many foster homes and orphanages. Most of her elementary school education came from the orphanage and foster homes, but her high school education was received while staying with Grace. She had a wonderful life living with Grace.

Grace would buy her things and teach her how to put on make-up. Until in 1942, when Graces husband, who was enlisted in the army, was transferred to the East Coast. Grace could not afford to take Norma Jeane with them. So Grace planned on an arranged marriage for Norma Jeane to their young neighbor boy, Jimmy Dougherty. On June 19, 1942, right after Norma Jeane's sixteenth birthday, Norma Jeane was married, and became Norma Jeane Dougherty. (web 1 - 2) Norma Jeane and Jimmy had a very happy and healthy marriage. Norma Jeane was working for Radio Plane Munitions, on the assembly line in Burbank, California.

After Jimmy also got transferred to the East Coast Norma Jeane got lonely. She started to become more interested in the other men. Eventually she had slept with a few men, other than her husband, in the factory. (http: web 1) In 1944, Norma Jeane was photographed on the assembly line at her work by, David Conover. He was taking pictures on women helping out with the war. David asked her if she ever considered modeling. That was the beginning of Norma Jeane's modeling career.

Two years later Norma Jeane was at a high point in her career and filed for a divorce. That same year was when Norma Jeane signed a contract with Twentieth Century Fox Studios, starting at $ 125 a week, and became, Marilyn Monroe. (web 2) Marilyn's first movie was, The Shocking Miss Pilgrim, in 1947, but, it was a very small part. She completed twenty nine movies in her whole career and left one unfinished. She also appeared on thirty three magazine covers across the world, in her first two years. Not including being the very first Playboy and being on the cover of the very first issue of Playboy magazine in 1953. After a few years in the movie business Marilyn decided to form her own movie production studio.

She called it Marilyn Monroe Productions. Her companys first movie produced was, Bus Stop. (web 2 - 4) Marilyn received many awards throughout her career. On January 14, 1954, Marilyn married baseball superstar Joe DiMaggio.

That also led to divorce in October of 1954, because of Joe being too over protective of Marilyn. When other guys would glance at her he would get so angry he would ask Marilyn to leave or even get into fights with the other men over her. Later she married play-write author Arthur Miller on June 29, 1956, after he divorced his other wife and left his family behind. In January 1961, Marilyn and Arthur divorced because of conflict of careers. (Orleans 1 - 3) Marilyn went through a lot of hard times in her career. She wanted, at all times to be the center of attention. She strived to be better than the best in all she did. Even though she accomplished this she felt that there was more to be done. She was admired by the men and young girls of her time.

Hollywood has grown to expect this same greatness from all female actresses and models, making it harder on them. People expect women to look their best and beyond. Sometimes forcing them to do some dumb things to look better, like an eating disorder to stay slim. On the good side, she has inspired many young girls to keep trying. To follow their dreams and never give up.

All people young or old need someone or something to look up to. Marilyn made that possible for people across the globe. It was very important and great that she did this. Who knows she might have kept someone from committing a crime or she could have done just the opposite. Therefore making a change in the business, the people in it, and the people who watch it. Whether it was for the better or worse, it was a change nevertheless, a change that is despised and also very much appreciated. (Singleton 2) Marilyn Monroe was an inspiration to all who strive to overcome their problems to reach the goal of being great.

She set a good example and a bad example to people all over the world. The worlds outlook on women today is changed forever because of Marilyn Monroe. Works Cited Biography: Marilyn Monroe. p. 1 - 6. Online. Internet. 21 February 2002.
