Night Watch was one of the pictures that really caught my eye. This was very interesting to me because it told me a story right when I looked at it. It was very realistic to me. I felt apart of the picture.

As if I could almost have grabbed the coat and put it on. This is amazing to me how a human can draw something so real looking. I am starting to look at art in a whole different perspective. I actually try and figure out what the artist is trying to tell the observer.

When I walk by a picture I wonder what was on the artists mind, what the artist is like and how he wants me to view his picture. I never would do this before I took this class. In my picture I choose, I see many different things. I see a white fire hat that said number 5 on it and also CFD was printed on it. This was the first object that I saw when I looked at the drawing. I knew the man who wore this uniform was important because it was a captains hat.

It said captain on the front of the hat. It appears to be in good condition but an older item. I bet the man used it a lot but tried to keep it in good condition. There is a black pair of boots sitting upright on the floor. The man is fairly large in size because the boots are pretty big. They also look old but in ok condition.

These look like they werent just thrown down on the floor, there nicely placed side by side in an orderly fashion. The man must have been neat and organized. I say man because most firefighters were and are men and thats just what I picture. The fire jacket, which is neatly draped over the back of a wooden chair in fairly good condition, is very bright and clean.

The hat sits upon this jacket of hard work. I know since this man is older and a captain that this jacket has been through a lot of hard work because its not easy being a firefighter. There are red suspenders hanging off the chair. These also look pretty worn and large. They dont fit in as well as the boots and coat because I thought you usually take suspenders off in your room not like this place, which looks kind of like a hallway to me. One item that I dont think fits in the picture is a small pot on the right side of the floor next to the chair.

I think that it is out of place because what does a pot and a firefighter has in common, basically nothing. The only thing I could picture is that it is a spittoon, a place to spit when using chewing tobacco. And it was drawn in the picture to even the picture out because if this werent in here everything would be more on the left side of the paper. The chair is in the middle, the chest and lantern is on the left and nothing would be on the right if this werent added. There is a lantern on the chest towards the left side of the drawing. It is silver and in pretty good condition.

The odd thing about the lantern is that there is no shadow behind it. I think there should be one because of the lighting and all the other objects have shadows. My prediction is that the artist forgot to draw a shadow behind the lantern. Most people wouldnt recognize this anyway unless they really examined the drawing. There is a red chest to the left of the chair. This is just being used for the lantern to be placed on.

The chest is fairly large and I noticed that the edges were worn off of it. I like the detail that this artist used. I believe that the chest has been around for a long time and has been opened up many times because of the look of the ware and tear of the piece. I was wondering why there were no firefighters pants and gloves. I could see why there might not be pants in the picture because he just took off over garnish then went to the bedroom to take off the rest of his clothing. But wouldnt he have to take off his gloves before he removed his jacket?

Maybe he just didnt wear any. Those are basically all the objects in the picture itself. The picture in general, has a very still life look to it. There is no movement to the drawing. All the objects arent meant to move they are just sitting there looking a banded.

I say a banded because it is in a very dark room, there is not much light only the objects in the spot light. The setting of this picture cant really be described. To me it looks like a never-ending hallway. The background is a blur and just goes nowhere. So the artist I guess leaves it up to you to decide where this takes place. It could be a room as well I suppose.

I think why would the objects be in the middle of the hallway? So this is just a dilemma to my mind. The cleanest and most detailed object I noticed in this painting is the floor. It is a grayish wooden floor and every splinter, line and curve are drawn in detail to make the painting Trompe Loeil. It has a very realistic image to it. Almost like you could reach out and touch it.

It is 3 D even though it is at an angle view. Since the objects are very centered I think he might have drawn it at an angle view to make it more interesting and not so boring. If it were a straight on view then I dont think it would be as Trompe Loeil. This painting reminds me of night because of the lantern. This also tells me that he must walk a lot and I bet he doesnt have a car and just walks a lot because of the ware on the boots. He must work at night so he needs light to see where hes walking so the lantern helps him.

It also talks to me in a way that is very gloomy. I can picture a very tired hard worked man with not much money trying to make a living. Its not a very happy looking picture. There is not enough light and colors to make it a happy drawing. This picture was one of the first pictures drawn by this artist. It is number 5.

I thought this picture was very well drawn for one of his first paintings because of the 3 D, Trompe Loeil, detailed features it represents. I think that I chose this one because it talked to me the most, almost like it was crying out to me for help. Just the depression part of the picture. This is strange to me because it seems to me like the firefighter wants to be noticed and felt bad for. Now that I am thinking about it, I feel a lot of pity for firefighters and I think that the artist does also. Its also weird to me because of what is happening in todays world in New York.

How depressing it is for all those firefighters. But I am very proud of the art they performed. Overall I like his work of art. It is very 3 D which I like cause It seems more real to me.

I also like the way he expresses his paintings. They are very strong like the gloominess to them. They speak a lot and I think thats why people are so interested in them like the one I chose, it told me a story. And we can all relate to them in a way so thats another attraction.

Bud London has changed my views and thoughts on art and the History of Art.
