When I was searching for topics I had a few main ideas in mind but I wasnt sure which one I wanted to choose, Obesity, O. C. D. and Plastic Surgery were some of the ones I wanted to do but I also considered some others. After searching obesity I found that there was not a lot of information on this topic and most of it was not backed up by a person or there site just plainly looked phony.

Then I searched for information on O. C. D. and found a lot of information on it but really did not want to select this as a topic because of the load of information. Right before I was going to move on to plastic surgery I realized that one of my friends was already doing that and was pretty sure that it was what she wanted to do and I really didnt want to do the same thing that someone else was doing. Then I had to decide if I wanted to do my I-search on obesity, O.

C. D. or a completely new topic. I knew that if I searched for it new topic it would leave me less time to work on the rest of my paper, writing my paper on O. C.

D. would give me a lot of information that my paper would need. I didn't know very much about this topic before researching it but wanted to know what it was because I had heard someone claim to have it. My questions I have for this topic are: What they are doing to help patience's with this disorder? , Is there a cure? , What are the signs? , Can it be inherited? , And more information on what it is? Lather, Rinse, Repeat. Repeat.

This may sound like a shampoo bottle, but it is not. It is just one of the many rituals that may plague the mind of someone who has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or O. C. D. (Understanding O.

C. D. ) Perhaps what is worse though is that people with O. C. D are widely misunderstood, especially as children and teenagers. If the public were more educated about the causes, behaviors, and treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, the people who suffer with it would not have to suffer in silence. I found out that O.

C. D. is an illness and personality disorder that has the symptoms of both obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions, are phobia or unwanted thought of something such as germs or making mistakes. Compulsions have more of a neatness effect, such as repeated checking of appliances; making sure doors are locked, collecting mail or trash and excessive cleaning. Normal signs of O.

C. D. are less sleep, Working excessively hard and redoing of things. It can be diagnosed in all ages and some traits of it can be inherited. Effects of it are depression, endless problems and possible suicide or death. There is no cure for this illness but there is treatment options such as meditation and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBI) are mainly in large groups to help with funding.

As bleak as the life of someone with OCD may sound, there is hope. While there is no cure for OCD or a way to prevent it, there are treatments for the symptoms. As with all mental illnesses, if you have OCD, the first step in treating it is learning about it and helping to teach your family and friends about what you are going through. It is important to have a group of people who will support you and understand. Within the last twenty years, scientists and psychologists have developed two successful treatments for OCD (O. C.

D. # 5) These two treatments are cognitive-behavioral therapy (or CBT) and a medication that has a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or SRI. When both are done together, the symptoms can almost completely vanish. Psychosurgery can also be done, but it is only done as an extreme last resort. (O. C. D. # 2).

Once diagnosed with O. C. D. it will continue for the rest of your life. A little over 2 % of North America's population has it. But 1 % of the population doesnt know they have it or dont have enough money for treatment.

There are programs to help with funding of treatments. It is one of the main disorders out of the 8 personality disorders and it is the only one that is not curable, (Personality Disorders). Finally after researching this topic I found the answer to my question, that they have put thousands of dollars into finding the cause and reactions of this illness and havent found any know cure because they havent found the cause of this disease. Currently, there is no proven cause of O. C.

D. , but there are a few strong suggestions. One of them has to deal with a specific neurotransmitter called serotonin. In patients with O. C. D. , there is a problem with the communication between the brain cells. Those cells are called neurotransmitters that relay messages between these two parts of the brain.

Many psychologists believe that it is low levels of serotonin that play a key role in the communication problem, and in turn OCD itself. Further evidence of this is what happens to the brains of those patients who saw their OCD fade after taking medication. Pictures of a working brain of one such patient "show that the brain circuits involved in OCD return to normal (OCD, 2000). " Unfortunately, an O. C.

D. diagnosis is not an easy one to make. While much headway has been made in recognizing OCD, it is a far cry from a one step process. Also, OCD tends to run in families. I think I worked well researching, writing, and quoting about this topic. I think that I could have used more time to work on this paper because a felt frantic and clustered in class.

I organized my materials well and got most of my stuff in on time. I probably could have worked more on my note cards because I noticed the lack of notes when I was trying to organize my work and had to go back to the source often to fully understand what I was talking about. I also used sloppy handwriting when doing my notecards and think that it got me even more confused. I needed allot more information on my topic and probably could have found more. I found my sources on Google, Quick Searh, and E-library. All of my sources were either a book or a dot org site.

I think that I found really good sources and got allot of good information that helped me write my paper. It was really hard for me in part two though because getting information without plagiarizing was difficult and I think that I might have a little bit. I probably did not use as strong of note format for my note cards. I used my class time well and wisely and got most of my stuff turned in on time.

I really worked well on this project but I could do better. If we ever had a project like this in the future I would probably do allot better because of what I have learned throughout this process, not only about O. C. D but also researching, writing, and note taking. Work Cited (Source's) Bayer, Linda.
