Freedom. Fear. Confusion. All are elements in the minds of a group of young boys who are stranded on a beautiful tropical island. There are no rules, no parents, and no type of authority. Golding's Lord of the Flies is a clever representation of the two conflicting social orders, democracy and dictatorship.

He displays the conflict through a carefully planned thought-experiment between the relationships of the young boys, especially the conflicting attitudes of Ralph and Jack. Ralph went beyond his fears and took charge almost immediately, providing each child with some sort of comfort and guidance through positive thinking. He has to come up with ways to maximize their chances of being rescued and more importantly, to find ways to survive until then. Think about it. Here on this beautiful island there are young boys who have no adult authority and are unsure about what to do.

This is an overwhelming task for Ralph to take on as the 12 - year old elected chief. All in all, however, Ralph doesnt allow his positive mentality to be destroyed by fear. Ralph is more civilized type who looks out for everyones better interests. That is what makes Ralph a good leader. There are tow main focuses here on this island. One of the main things emphasizes informing all of the boys that staying alive on this island is a team effort.

The notion of all for one and one for all became very popular. With this idea, Ralph did the separation of duties. One group builds the shelters. Another finds the food and finally someone must stay on duty to keep the fire going. Rules were set and enforced.

All agreed to do their share. Ralph didnt want the boys to think that he was trying to be someone that told them what to do. He made sure that he let the boys know that being on the island can be a learning experience and not the end of their lives just as long as they did their part. Jack, however, challenges Ralph to his leadership.

He represents the more daring and wild child. Jack constantly reminds the boys that they are on an island alone and that they shouldnt follow Ralph's rules, but this is just his manipulative way of getting them to follow his. This was their opportunity for freedom or it could be their death. Jack resented the fact Ralph was voted to be the leader. After all he was the choirboy leader and since he was very athletic and highly active he felt that creating his own group would allow the littel uns to be free and hunt like real men.

The boys couldve hunted and be under a civilized group with Ralph. More and more the children were being manipulated by fear through threats of starvation, intense belief of a beast on the island and also death. Because of these fears they didnt realize how crucial and important it was to sit on the mountain to tend to the smoke signal. With this in mind, many of the boys left Ralph and went to Jack. Sure one has to do what one can to survive, but why allow your fears to discourage your chances of being rescued?

Why become inhumane and go against your own kind. I dont believe that all of the boys wanted to be apart of Jacks little hunting tribe. For example, Sam and Eric, the twins of the island, were very reluctant about being on jacks tribe, but fear and intimidation caught their attention. They werent starving before they went off with jack. They just figured that they would rather hunt before being the hunted. Also, if there were a real beast on the island the one with the weapons should be Jack.

I would probably be on Ralph's side and introduces a system in which each of us takes part in hunting, building and maintaining the fire. Also, Ralph couldve been more aggressive. For instance, Jack ruined Ralph's shelters to get to Piggy's specs, which were used, in creating the fire. Ralph tried to compromise with them, however it didnt go well.

They couldve asked to borrow it instead of fighting for it. Ralph should have taken their spears, which was their main source, so that they could understand what it felt like to get their things taken. This became a battle where it was every man for themselves. The boys were too young to understand the concept of being their own leader and taking advice from someone who knows what they are doing in a situation of this kind. It wasnt their fault. They were all afraid and so was Jack, no matter how powerful he was.

He feared that no one would be on his side, so he intimidated them. Though Jack was physically strong, his mentality was weaker. His fear allowed him to intimidate and murder two of his own kind. Ralph, on the other hand, felt responsible for their lives on this island and he made it his duty to see to it that they get rescued. Though he was less physical, he kept his mind closed to destruction and fear. Courage and strength covered his fear and loneliness and death.

All of the boys chose a good leader in the first place. People say you should always stick with your first instinct, I know I would have. Democracy and dictatorship clashed once again.
