There once was a guy named Timmy. Timmy was attending college at the University of Wisconsin. At the college, he was going through a biology class and was having a hard time comprehending the theory of cells. He didnt understand what all the cell parts were and what their functions were.

He hoped that as time went on, hed eventually catch on. Well any ways, Timmy was in desperate need of some money. He needed some food for his dorm and wanted a new bike to travel around on. While he was flipping through the classified ads, he found a job that sounded interesting to him. Subway needed some help with making sandwiches and working at the register. Timmy thought this would be an easy way for him to make some quick and easy money.

The next day, Timmy drove to the nearest Subway and got an application. He filled it out and turned it in within a few hours. In a matter of two days, he got a call back saying he was hired! He was ecstatic! Finally, hell be able to have some money. Timmy was really excited and he was looking forward to his first day at work.

The manager asked him if he could start as soon as tomorrow and Timmy agreed. While he was excited, he was nervous at the same time. He didnt want to screw up his first day on the job. The manager told him not to worry though because the job isnt too tough and hell find help if he needs it. Timmy went to bed that night on a good note looking forward to his first day in the working field. Timmy woke up early the following morning and got himself ready for work.

He was supposed to be there at 11: 00 a. m. but he wanted to get there a little early so he would look better. While he was getting ready, he realized that he totally forgot about his quiz on cell parts that he was scheduled to have that night. He didnt know what to do! !

Since he had to be at work in a short time, he knew he didnt have time to study. Timmy was in a dilemma and he didnt know what to do. After a while, Timmy decided that hed have to figure out a way to study at work, if at all possible. Leaving it at that, Timmy went out the door and headed to work. Timmy arrived at work about ten minutes early. The manager was pleased with him being on time and immediately started training him on how to make Subway sandwiches.

In a matter of minutes, Timmy got the hang of things and was able to make a sandwich on his own. Around noon, the place was becoming rather busy and Timmy was able to handle things on his own pretty well. After a while, Subway was slowing down and it was becoming less busy. The manager notified Timmy that she needed to go run some errands and asked if he would be able to look after the place while she was gone.

He replied with a yes because he now knew how to make sandwiches, run the cash register, and take care of the place on his own. The manager said she wouldnt be long so Timmy didnt have anything to worry about. During the time the manager was gone, Timmy remembered his cell part quiz that he was going to have that night. He knew he had to study for it but was confused on finding a way to study at work. After a long time of thinking, he finally got an idea! ! In class the other day, he remembered his professor saying, how a cell works like a factory.

Maybe he could translate that into, how a cell works like Subway? Timmy thought he would give it a try. The first part of the cell he was going to research was the plasma membrane. He compared the plasma membrane of a cell, to the doors of Subway. Timmy knew that the plasma membrane controlled the movement of materials in and out of the cell, and that is just what the doors do at Subway.

The next part of the cell that he was going to look into was the cell wall. The function of the cell wall is to protect the cell and give it support. Timmy thought to himself, and eventually compared the cell wall to the cement bricks that hold Subway together. They both are protective and give support. Another part of the cell that Timmy needed to study was the nucleus. The nucleus controls all of the cells functions.

Basically its the boss, and Timmy came to the conclusion that the nucleus would compare to his manager at Subway. He also wanted to take a look at the nucleolus. He remembered from class that the nucleolus produces ribosomes. This one was a little tougher to compare to Subway, but Timmy figured out that it would be somewhat like the bread machine that makes all of the dough. Speaking of ribosomes, that was Timmy's next cell part that he needed to check up on. The ribosomes are the part of the cell that makes the proteins.

Timmy didnt know what this would be in comparison to Subway. He looked down and noticed all the ingredients that go into each sandwich. Thats it! The ribosomes are all the ingredients that go inside the sandwiches. One of the main parts in the cell is known as the cytoplasm.

It is the site where chemical runs occur. The inside of the cell is filled with cytoplasm. Timmy thought that at Subway, it was in the kitchen where the food is made and in the dining room where the food is eaten. He was thinking to himself that this was actually a really good way to study for his upcoming quiz. The next part of the cell he wanted to study was the endoplasmic reticulum. It is the folded membrane where chemical runs occur in the cytoplasm.

Timmy was realizing these werent so hard after all. He compared the endoplasmic reticulum to the booths in the dining room where customers eat. Another part of the cell is called the golgi apparatus. Timmy thought it was the part of the cell that repackaged proteins. He compared this to the store room at Subway. Another cell part that would be easy to compare to Subway would be the vacuole.

The vacuole is the food and waste storage part to the cell. It easily compares with the cupboards and garbage cans at Subway. Similar to the vacuole is the lysosomes. Timmy's professor had told him that this was the recycled garbage and waste part of the cell. He was right. Timmy thought the lysosomes compared with all of the recycle bins in Subway.

There were only five cell parts left. Timmy was really starting to get the hang of things. He was surprised at how much this was helping him. Timmy was sort of wondering where the manager was since she had been gone for a while but it didnt bother him too much since the place wasnt that busy at all.

The next cell part he wanted to learn some more about was the mitochondria. It is where the cell stores energy, ATP. At Subway, he thought the mitochondria would be the refrigerator and the ice. Another cell part was the chloroplasts. He remembered from class that these were only found in plant cells and that they transfer light energy into useable chemical energy. He thought to himself for a little bit and realized that the chloroplasts would be compared to the windows at subway because that is passive solar energy.

Time was flying by! Timmy only had about an hour left before he had to leave work. He wanted to finish his studying before he had to leave so he would be ready for his quiz tonight. Cilia or flagella are another part of the cell. It is the cell movement. In comparison to Subway, Timmy thought that these would be like the waitresses that deliver all of the food.

Chromatin was another part. It contains hereditary material and DNA. These were like the recipes of all the sandwiches at Subway. The last cell part was the centriole. This part of the cell separates chromatin during cell division. It took him a while to think about this, but Timmy thought that this would be like the waitresses setting the table at Subway.

At last he was done! ! And it was now time to go home. The manager arrived about 5 minutes after he had finished his studying and she allowed him to go him a little early. As soon as Timmy got home, he had to get ready to go to class and take his quiz. He felt like he was ready for this quiz and he knew what all the cell parts were in detail. That night, Timmy took his quiz and passed with flying colors!

The studying he did at Subway actually helped him a lot with learning his cell parts. He was thankful to have passed his test, and was now looking forward to his next day on the job.
