Many people rely on appearance to make a judgment. Never judge a book by its cover. Judging a book by its cover will lead to disappointment. In the play, Macbeth, there are many victims to appearance.

Duncan believed his nobles are loyal but in reality, they were scheming against him, Malcolm had made himself appear like a bad person to Macduff, but in reality he is the opposite, a good trusting man, and the last victim to judgment is Macbeth, who trusted the witches but they tricked him, in the end. During the Middles Ages, many kings gave their complete trust to nobles who protected areas of land. Complete trust that meant the nobles could do what ever they wanted to do in their district. The nobles held parties and dinners for other nobles to attend. King Duncan had trusted all his nobles who fought in the battles against Sweno, King of Norway.

Macbeth and Banquo fought hard and well against Sweno and came out victorious. Duncan rejoiced as he heard the news about the victory and the excellent fighting of Macbeth, but a messenger had told him that one of his Thanes had become a traitor. Doubtful it stood; / As two spend swimmers, that do cling together/ And choke their art. The Merciless Macdonwald -- -/ Worthy to be a rebel, for to that/ The multiplying villainies of nature/ Do swarm upon him -- -/ from the western isles/ Of kerns and gallowglasses is supplied; / And fortune, on his damned quarrel smiling, / Show'd like a rebels whore: but alls too weak; / For brave Macbeth -- - well he deserves that name -- -/ Disdaining fortune, with his brandish'd steel, / Which smoked with bloody execution, / Like valour's minion carved out his passage/ Till he faced the slave; / Which neer shook hands, nor bade farewell to him, / Till he unheard him from nave to the chaps, / And fix'd his head upon out battlements. (I.

ii. 9 - 25) Macdonwald, the Thane of Cawdor, was the traitor who fought for the King of Norway. The Thane was executed for his actions against the king. Duncan had full trust in Macdonwald. He was too naive to tell that the Thane had become traitor until Macdonwald showed his true colours. Duncan, happy with the victory had an open position to give out with the death of Macdonwald. The king had given the position of Thane of Cawdor to Macbeth.

Yet again, he put too much trust into the Thane of Cawdor. At a dinner party to celebrate all that had happened, Macbeth invited everyone to rejoice. Macbeth, influenced by the prophecies went up to Duncan's room and murdered him, framing the guards and Duncan's sons. Duncan being so naive and trustful again, got what he deserved.

The king had been too trustful in his nobles and it came back and slapped him in the face. His nobles made themselves seem like they were his closest comrades but were actually his worst enemies. Duncan kept his friends close and his enemies even closer. Malcolm, one of Duncan's sons had fled to England in fear of being murdered himself after his fathers death. Edward the Confessor, King of England, sheltered him and had many soldiers to support him. Malcolm and his brother had been frames for the death of their father since they had fled but most had the suspicion it was Macbeth.

Malcolm was not sure that anyone in Scotland supported him or believed that he did not kill his father so he had to keep his guard up and not be too trustful like his father, Duncan. Macduff, who was fed up with Macbeth and was suspicious of him, had traveled to England in search of Malcolm to fight against Macbeth. Malcolm was still suspicious of people in Scotland so he had to test Macduff to see if he was on the side of Macbeth, That, when they shall be open'd, black Macbeth/ Will seem as pure as snow, and the poor state/ Esteem him as a lamb, being compared. / With my confine less harms. (IV. iii. 59 - 63) Malcolm made himself appear to be a bad person, even worse the Macbeth when Macduff interviewed him. Macduff did not really care; he just wanted Macbeth out of power. As Macduff gave up, Malcolm showed his true colours and told him that he would help take back Scotland with the help of a lot of English soldiers.

Wither indeed, before thy here-approach, / Old Seward, with ten thousand warlike men, / Already at a point, was setting forth. (IV. iii. 148 - 150) Malcolm appeared to be evil but in the end was the man Macduff was looking for. Witches are considered to be the devils servants and evil. Many people back in the Middle Ages were afraid of witches and were told never to trust a witch. Macbeth and Banquo were traveling along when out of no where three witches appeared.

The three witches told six prophecies. Three of the prophecies were towards Macbeth. All, hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Games! / All, hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! / All, hail, Macbeth! That shalt be king hereafter. (I.

iii. 50 - 53) Banquo was curious about his life and so he asked for three prophecies. Lesser than Macbeth, yet greater. / Not so happy, yet much happier. / Thou shalt get kings, though though be none (I. iii. 68 - 70) Macbeth was very pleased with the prophecies and is misled by these hell spawn creatures. Though the three witches appeared to be helping Macbeth, they were actually just playing with his mind. The Weird Sisters gave three more prophecies to Macbeth, which made him more confidant. Macbeth practically thought he was immortal but in the end was brought to a wicked demise.

Macduff had killed Macbeth even though Macbeth thought the prophecies had told him he could not die at the hands of Macduff. The Weird Sisters made Macbeth believe that they would bring good fortunes to him but in reality they were plotting an evil scheme that changed the world around him. All three examples showed that appearance is usually an illusion and a fake of what something is in reality. Appearance is like a shell surrounding a chick.

On the outside, the shell may look like one thing, but deep inside is a beautiful or dead chick ready to emerge. In time, the truth will come out. In the end, judging by appearance will probably lead to disappointment, but that isnt true in all cases.
