There is a small island named San Piedro located in the Page Sound, Northwest. San Piedro had a brand of verdant beauty that inclined its residents toward the poetical, and also had enormous hills, soft green with cedars. Most people who worked there were Japanese-American immigrants at strawberry field. Amity Harbor was the only town and also had the only courthouse in this island.

This story developed from this courthouse. In winter of 1954, when the snow started, in this courthouse, a trial was held and one Japanese-American was accused of murder. His name was Kabuo Yamamoto, who is also local fisherman. In September 1954, a local fisherman, Carl Heine, was found suspiciously drowned on the foggy sea. A wound, which seems to be hit so hard, was found in the head of a dead body. And, next day, Kabuo got arrested as a murder suspect because, the night before that day, Kabuo undoubtedly went fishing at the same spot where Carl did as well.

A battery that Kabuo used in common was found on Carl Heine's fishing boat, Susan Marie, and rope for connecting both fishing boat and take to a Carl's boat was found as a important evidence on Carl Heine's fishing boat, Susan Marie. Also, a bloodstained fishing rod was found on Kabuo's fishing boat. Kabuo's lawyer, Nels Gumundsson, claim that Kabuo was innocent since the cause of death was drowned. However, a wound of a dead body remained them of Kendo, Japanese swordsmanship, because Kabuo had learned when he was child. Everything was at a disadvantage for Kabuo during this trial. His wife, Hatsue Yamamoto, seated for a public and gaze at Kabuo, but it was all up with her.

Also, there was a person who kept a very close watch on this trail. He was a local reporter and his name was Ishamael Chambers. "He had only one arm, the left having been amputated ten inches below the shoulder joint. " (page 7) He had came this court for this trail; however, he looked at Kabuo's wife, Hatsue. When Ishamael and Hatsue were young, they loved each other. When Hatsue was fourteen years old, she was beautiful girl and had long black hair. Some rain day, Ishamael went after Hatsue who ran through a mountain path and tried to hide in grotto of Cedars. Then they talked a lot in there.

Ishamael drew Hatsue closer to himself and kissed her. However, Hatsue's mother couldnt allow going around together with Hakujin, White or American. Still, the secret of relationship between Hatsue and Ishamael continued for a long time. At the same time, citizens of island began to have prejudice against Japanese and Japanese-American because of war between Japan and the U. S. When Ishamael's father wrote about Japanese on his newspaper, many readers of that newspaper made a complaint to his article.

One of them said clearly "The Japs are the enemy, ." (p. 192) There was a trouble over the seven-acre land between Kabuo's home and died Carl's home. Kabuo's father promised Carl's father to buy its land from Carl's father because Kabuo's father knew that they would be accepted to have own land in Kabuo's generation. However, because war broken out, Kabuo's father could pay only half of payment. Finally, both fathers were dead. Carl's mother survived, but she wouldnt ever gave that land over to Kabuo. When Carl was died, Carl bought land, which was passed into someone elses possession, back.

However, in order to buy it back from Carl, Kabuo tried to negotiate with him about the land. In courthouse, it was pursued that there was a conflict between them. This was one of the motives to kill Carl Heine. War influenced the relationship between Ishameal and Hatsue as well because Japan attacked the U.

S. Also, because of this war, Japanese or Japanese-American ran into a lot of flak from White. One day, FBI visited Hatsue's house for looking around. Local citizen complained that certain enemy aliens on San Piedro Island have in their possession items declared illegal contraband. Then, FBI seized valuables in Hatsue's house as wella's her fathers, Hisao, the gun, the shells, the sword, and the dynamite as illegal contraband.

Therefore, Hisao was arrested and FBI sent him to Montana. After Hisao had gone, Hatsue's mother, Fujiko, told her five daughter about hatred between Japanese and haku jin, which means White in Japanese. However, Hatsue didnt agree with Fujiko because she loved White, Ishameal. Hatsue said, "I dont want to be Japanese!" (p. 201) After that, all Japanese-American, who lived in San Piedro island, left the island, and were interned in a concentration camp. This happening triggered off separation of Hatsue and Ishameal. Ishamael suggested her to stay island; however, she knew that it was impossible.

While Hatsue spent hard time in camp, she found and felt the difference of color of the skin. Then Hatsue wrote a letter to Ishamael. Content of the letter was "I loved you, but I didnt love you. ", and then she married Kabuo, who had the same color of the skin as Hatsue. On the other hand, Ishameal got this letter and gave him a shock. After that, He lost left arm during war. When his arm was cut, he had a grudge against Hatsue and said "that fucking goddamn Jap bitch." (p. 325) After he came back, he recalled his partner who died during war many times, and took over his fathers a newspaper publishing company.

Also, Kabuo had to participate war as American army and recalled young German soldier Kabuo killed. Whether changed from snow to a blizzard. Ishamael went to lighthouse in order to look for record of storm in 1929. He happened to find the record of radio there. Then he found that cargo ship went through offshore at the same time when Carl died. He also noticed that it is logical that Susan Marine capsized because of that cargo ship.

He put that record into his pocket. Ishamael knew that Kabuo's innocence could be proved with this evidence, record. However, he was in two minds about doing so. He hesitated that he should or should not help Kabuo, whose wife let him down long ago.

His mind still wavered. He still loved her but, at the same time, felt bitter about her. Then Ishamael went to the house where he spent his time with his father, who was also journalist and after war, his father fought for prejudice of Japanese-American. Hatsue complained to him that Kabuo's trail was unfair because of Japanese.

So did his mother. "Its a shame. " and "I have to think its travesty. That they arrested him because hes Japanese. " (p. 343) He wondered if he could be like his brave father. Last day of trail, Kabuo took the witness stand and appealed his innocence. But Kabuo was detestable for a juror because of war and testimony evidences from witness, who had prejudice against Japanese, went on.

Ishamael had met with hatsue and a judge with record as evidence. Actually, other decisive evidences were found in Susan marine. Finally, Kabuo's innocence was proved. Hatsue and her family were glad about it and also were thankful to Ishamael for his decision.

After dismissed the court, Kabuo came out of his cell without leg irons or handcuffs; standing just outside its door, he kissed Hatsue for a long time. Ishamael took a picture of this, and he watched them through his viewfinder. After he went back to his office, he shut his eyes and exerted himself to see everything clearly. And Ishamael gave himself to writing of it. It was snowing heavily during three days trial.
