Sir William Blackstone once said, That the King can do no wrong is a necessary and fundamental principle of [the government]. In the novel Oedipus Rex by Sophocles this statement still remains true. The people of Thebes must think of Oedipus as perfect for complete order to be obtained. But, Oedipus has been known to be short-tempered, and he seems to be overly proud of himself.

Also, He makes rash decisions as king. That is why; Oedipus is not a suitable king. Oedipus is quick to anger. His anger shows weakness to his people. The common people saw that his words were spoken except in anger 2 (p. 21) as he confronted Creon. When the people saw his anger make him say things without thought, they realized that he had a weakness.

This weakness made the people see him as less of a sacred person. Therefore, Oedipus begins to lose the respect of his people and that loses him the control over his land. Also, Oedipus anger causes him to make accusations without knowledge. Oedipus claims that [Creon} planned it, [Creon] had it done (p. 18) before he knew all the facts. By making accusations in anger Oedipus could make a bad decision that a levelheaded king would not make. He could cause the downfall of Thebes because he does not have all the knowledge and his anger would cause him to make an accusation that would have a bad impact on Thebes.

Finally, His anger results in him denying things he cannot handle. When he is faced with things he doesnt like he dismisses it by calling [w]however you say is worthless. 2 (p. 19) This causes him to ignore very important facts that a king has to deal with just because they are unpleasant to him, and make him angry. This will leave many things that need attention, unattended, and it will cause the downfall of Thebes because of all the problems he doesnt deal with. Another characteristic flaw of Oedipus is that Oedipus shows signs of Hubris. Because of this flaw, he makes the gods angry with him. As he is talking to his people he associate[s] [him]self with the oracle. 2 (p. 13) If the gods are angry with the king they will cause awful things to happen to the people.

His Arrogance causes his kingdom to suffer and this makes them unhappy with him. This unhappiness will cause him to lose control of his followers and cause anarchy in Thebes. Moreover, his redundant acts of arrogance will anger his people. He appears presumptuous to his people when he assures them that [y]ou cannot hurt me or any other man who sees the sun. 2 (p. 20) His self-importance will make people think of him as careless and they will believe that he cant see their views from his place with the gods. If the kingdom believes that their views are not being addressed, they will become angry with the ruler and eventually riotous. Finally, He makes his people feel weak and meaningless.

He calls his people poor children. 2 (p. 5) When his people feel weak they feel useless. This will cause them to stop believing in their king and nation because they do not care. When they stop working the economy will dissolve. Therefore, Thebes will be left in ruins.

Furthermore, Oedipus is careless and speaks before he thinks. One such problem that may occur is that, he may let secrets out that are not to be widely known. He says things such as, Let them all hear it 2 (p. 7) to Creon, who want to speak in private. This causes important facts that only he, and his advisors should know, leak to unwanted ears. He could accidentally say a secret about himself out loud to someone he didnt want to hear, because he did not think before he spoke. This could lose the respect of his people or they could even hate him.

This will make the populous dispute his rule and it may end up in his dethroning. Also, his people will begin to question his decisions. After he believes the murderer is Creon he prays, [May Creon's] life be consumed in evil and wretchedness. 2 (p. 13) When the people see that he is wrong, they will begin to question all his decisions and he will lose the authority that any king commands. They will think that he is incompetent and they will not listen to what he has to say. They will no longer have a leaders voice and Thebes will crumble. Finally, His words are spoken in selfishness.

When he wants to know the murderer of King Los, he needs to know the truth, he says it must be made known. 2 (p. 55) He wanted to know whom the murderer is because the thing that comes to his mind is what he wants, not what Thebes needs. This will create very greedy decisions from Oedipus and many bad decisions for Thebes. Consequently, Oedipus is not suitable to be a king. He seems to be very temperamental, and he thinks of himself somewhat god-like. He is also an extremely impulsive person with little king for his people.

In Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, Oedipus does not seem to be perfect. In the eyes of his people this is very important. Oedipus does not possess all the fundamental principles of a king, and that is why he is not a very good king.
