The traditional music in Bangladesh shares the perspectives of that of the Indian subcontinent. Music in Bangladesh can be divided into three distinct categories-classical, folk and modern. The classical music, both vocal and instrumental is rooted in the remote past of the sub-continent. Bangla music arena is enriched with Jari, Shari, Bhatiali, Murshidi and other types of folk songs. Social dance is originated from religion. Lathi dance or Stick dance, Boat dance, Jari dance, Baul, Murshidi, Marriage dance and Dhali dance are social in nature. A number of social folk dances have established themselves as a stage dance or have provided the basis of such dances in Bangladesh.
In certain areas of Bangladesh handkerchief dance and mask dance like Cheap dance of Purulia, West Bengal are also prevalent. Lathi, Stick and Dhali dance: Dancers carry a day or shield made of cane in one hand and a stick in the other. The Jari song is generally sung during Muharram ceremony. The dancing and singing are performed by a group of persons in a collective form making either a chain or a ring. Murshidi dance: Regarded as the dance of the spiritual love.
It is accompanied by song, singer do a slow rhythmic walk with slight bending of the knees at each beat time. Handkerchief dance: It is connected with wedding festivity. Jhumur dance: A typical tribal dance, performed by women dancers of the Kora caste, forming into several single rows with the arms and hands of dancers each row interlaces and clasped together to form a chain. The shoulders of the dancers touch other so as to form a closely-knit chain, symbolizing a close tribal solidarity.
