Since the early 1900 s and until the past few years ago in the scientific field, female equality among the western culture has risen steadily. People believe that the reason why females havent progressed much in the scientific field is because of male chauvinism and sexism. Well this statement is as much correct as it is false. The problem goes deeper then this. Alienation of women from the sciences by feminists is the least of the problems that women face when entering the sciences. Gender bias, the burden of child baring, and the lack of self-confidence are just a few of the factors women must face while trying to succeed in becoming scientists in a world dominated by male superiority.

The idea of equal rights isnt merely an idea anymore; it is a living factor in our day-to-day lives. The feminist view that support science as an equal-opportunity career is considered correct. But this view should be the same for the rest of the occupations and professions in the world. One problem is that feminist want to change science to fit the special characteristics that females have. Changing the sciences to fit the female sexes special characteristics doesnt support the equality issue at all. Men and women must understand the effects that culture has on science.

Feminists have such a municipally narrow minded view that often it incomprehensible to see that science is effected by the social activities and culture of its time. One is to believe that women themselves change the nature of science, simply by becoming scientists. There is no need for women to change the science because it changes as the womens movement progresses. If science changes for women, then all of the sciences must change; including the way men handle science. This may still cause an argument in this debate over equal rights.

Instead of the feminists arguing for a change in the sciences the males will be. The sexes need to find a medium where each part can incorporate their ideas on science and scientific approaches. Equal rights are a positive idea and if nurtured correctly, it can become a spectacular achievement. Total equality in every one of its aspects is only an idea and is sadly unreachable, at least in the time being.

The idea of equality differs from individual to individual. As a child, the idea of equal rights may be irrelevant. As time progresses, people grow and are exposed to their environment. Their perceptions change and they begin to form personal opinions and beliefs. As a fully blossomed individual, equal rights are a problem that is faced on a regular unavoidable basis. There is a controversy in the emphasis over dolls and more masculine toys that are played with as a child.

Some people say if a child plays with dolls they will be more feminine in character or if a child plays with G. I. JOES an action figure of some sort they will have a more masculine attitude. The point that should be clarified is parents and scientists shouldnt worry about the toys these children are playing with.

The concentration should be on the role models and people who surround these children at the moments where they learn how to be more socially active. All children need are positive role models with a respectable outlook on the rights of men and women to help guide them towards a better understanding of equal rights as they develop into mature adults. There is a need for special encouragement in the lives of females towards a career in the scientific field. The focus shouldnt just be on the encouragement or extra support for women entering the scientific field. There should also be a focus on the development of programs where females and males both have the equal opportunity to excel in this field. There is a need for female teachers and mentors in the school system to encourage females to advance in the educational pursuit the sciences.

If they lack support, not only from males but females as well, to move into the scientific field, they will soon lack the self-confidence need to progress and succeed. The difference between men and women are the roles played in the child bearing. Often the female is seen as the nurturer and often takes time from her work to take care of the child or children. This can cause problems in the work place if the female decides to return to her work environment. In the scientific field a lot of changes can happen over the coarse of the maternity leave.

Often when people return to their workplace in the scientific field they have to be retrained. Retraining isnt cheap and it would seem more cost effective to encourage females to return to the work force in the sciences. As males and females approached the end of the 1900 s, there was a noticeable role reversal in the roles of the sexes. The roles of males and females are not only reversing, but also developing and blending into one another. More men were staying at home so women could continue their educational and occupational pursuit.

Non-the-less the in higher percentage of dual working parents, the females are the ones who are quitting their jobs and staying home. Probably on of the most obvious obstacles a woman faces in the sciences is gender bias. Since the early 1900 s people have moved a long way in our attitudes towards the opposite sex. This movement is positive and quite noticeable in western cultures, but still poses a problem. Those remaining in sciences often face discrimination, being employed on a less secure footing and receiving lower grants than their male colleagues, says Nancy J. Lane, the Project Director of the University of Cambridge's new initiative for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology.

This is a problem that people face in every occupation and slowly seems to be diminishing. Itll be long before this problem is expelled from the sciences. The struggle for equal rights is a battle that has been happening ever since there have been two different sexes on the planet. There are so many different factors that effect can effect ones personal beliefs such as political, morals, culture and religious beliefs, that equality is seen as an almost unreachable agreement.

The womens movement has progressed rapidly in the past decade and has come to a gigantic halt in the sciences. One is to only imagine the new problems that will develop in the up coming years of our rapidly changing society. Who would ever think that a penis and a vagina could make such a difference in our life styles? Bibliography Rosengarten, Herbert and Jane flick. The Broadview Reader.
