... is ready to take his death without cause. Im an old hog. You mans dont stay in no stall like this. Im a old hog they fattening up to kill. This disturbing comment is a reflection of what can happen when during your whole life you have been told that you were second class; it shows a lot about what happens to people who are treated like that, they will start to believe the ideas put in their head.

This would also explain why the blacks allowed themselves to be taken advantage of by the white men for decades. The ideals that the white men instilled into the black slaves made them feel like second class citizens, and after they felt like it for long enough, they started to believe that they truly werent equal. Others believed otherwise. The novel is about respect, as the black people became more educated and aware of their position in society, they longed for equality and respect as a people. None in the book longed for respect and equality more than Grant Wiggins. Grant was a well-educated man, and because of that, he thought that his ideals should be held in high esteem.

Two ways in the novel that Grant dealt with the white oppression are seen. The first is defiance. Grants education was rare of a black man, and because of it he was given an ego. This ego did not make him feel as though he was better than his black brothers, it made him feel that he was equal to the white men, and his outlooks and ideas should be heard. This out right defiance came in small battles fought for traditional behavior; Grants unwillingness to follow the traditional black customs made a point to the white men, that he will not take their abuses lying down. We can see the evidence of this at the very start of the novel, Been waiting long?

Sam Guidry asked me. About two and a half hours, sir, I said. I was supposed to say, Not long, and I was supposed to grin; but I didnt do either. Grant Wiggins is a very special black man from that period; he defied tradition in order to prove a point, that he wasnt going to take the blatant racial abuses sitting down.

He is not the only special person from that time period to prove a point. Rosa Parks, a young woman coming home from work in 1955 refused to give up her seat to a white man, and in that way she refused to give up her soul to the people who had being trying to take it for so many years. The white police officers threw her in jail for her dissent, and with that action she became a martyr, and a spark to the kindling, a spark which lit the flame of the civil rights movement. This movement started with the boycott of the transit system by the black men, and eventually it was deemed unconstitutional for racial segregation on buses. This was a large step for equality, and I think that Grant Wiggins would have done the same thing, his defiance of the traditional customs was much like Rosa Parks, and their stories are very similar. The differences lie in the other way Grant dealt with white oppression.

Grants realization at the seeming futility regarding the fight for equality leads him to the only thing he thought he could do; escape. Escape plays a big role in the novel; Grant is always escaping from his problems by drinking. This is a sign of frustration on Grants part, frustration at the fact that no matter how hard he tries he can never be in control of his own destiny. Numerous times throughout his life Grant has had to put up with being bossed around by white people and his nathan, and he is fed up with it.

Grant does rebel against them and tell them what he thinks, but this never seems to satisfy him, because he is always settling for less than what he wants to. Grant is too smart for his own good, a black man with a white attitude bound by a world run by ignorance and discrimination. This frustrates Grant and causes him to escape his problems by drinking at the bar, drowning his frustrations in alcohol as he plots to up and leave for a better place. Vivian is also a way that Grant escapes from the harsh realities of life, whenever he is down and feels trapped by life he goes to Vivian, she could tell I had just been to the jail, obviously by that statement Grant visits Vivian a lot after his visits to the jail to escape his problems.

All of these lead to Grants frustration due to a lack of power, and lead to a dependency on alcohol and the woman he loves. A Lesson Before Dying is a novel about respect, ignorance and power. The ways in which various black characters interacted with the white men of that time shaped and changed their lives. Some, like Miss Emma chose to accept that she will always be second class, however she felt that if she could guilt the white men into giving her small things she would have won, but on a small, insignificant scale.

Jefferson believed that the white men were superior because of the preaching he had heard, it had been driven into him over the years, and so eventually he believed it. Grant however attempts defiance in a futile attempt for power, which leaves him unfulfilled and desiring a better life. These were the types of personalities which slowed or lead the civil rights movement, and I think we can all be glad that their sacrifices leave us with a more tolerant world, a world where man is equal in everyones eyes, and those seemingly futile battles in retrospect were worth it.
