I love Hockey because it's a very competitive game. There is nothing better to me than winning a big game or making a nice play. Some people have different opinions than me on what the game means to them. My mom and my girlfriend are good examples of this. My mom goes to the games and enjoys watching the goalies. She enjoys there bright colored padding and is always is amazed at how they can skate with all that heavy equipment on.

My girlfriend, like my mom, does not go to watch the high paced action and the competitive nature of the game, she simply likes to watch the players on the ice and see if any are good looking. For instance, last game I played my team won 5 - 4, I asked my girlfriend after the game what the score was and she didn't know, she just told me that "number 13 white was really good looking. " For me hockey is about competing. Making a big hit or scoring a nice goal is what I enjoy about the game. Hockey lets me channel my competitiveness. I'm a very competitive person in every aspect of my life, not just in hockey. Being a student athlete I have to juggle school and hockey.

Sometimes it can be very demanding and difficult to do both. Last month I had three tests in one day and a big hockey game that night. I knew I couldn't fail my tests so I stayed up until 5: 00 am studying that night. To me I was competing.

If I fell asleep I knew I would fail my exams; I couldn't give into my fatigue and sleep. I had to compete to stay awake and concentrate on the task at hand, which were my study notes. I managed to pass all my tests and have good game that night because I focused my competitiveness and didn't allow myself to fail. Constantly changing as I've grown is my point of view on hockey and competitiveness. When I was younger my friends and I would go to our local rink and play hockey all day because it was fun. We used to play all afternoon until our mothers yelled from the front steps "dinner time!" After dinner it was back to hockey.

Back when I was younger, hockey was just about having fun. It wasn't about competition. I just loved to skate. There was nothing better than feeling the cool winter wind against my face, growing stronger with every stride, or feeling the ice cut beneath me, splashing up fresh white snow with every precise calculated maneuver.

I still love the game and these things but now I realize it's more like a job than a hobby. I started realizing this when I was given my first paycheck in junior hockey. After that I knew that hockey was more than a game for me, it was my job. I now know that showing up at the rink means it's time to work. Like any other job, I now have to compete and perform if I want to play. Hockey now, is not always fun, but it's what I have to do to improve my future.

My competitive side comes from growing up and watching my older brother Darren. Darren is a very competitive person in every thing he does. He loves to win and will do whatever it takes to succeed in achieving his goals. Being his little brother, many of his traits and characteristics have rubbed off on me, including his competitiveness. He too plays hockey, and loves the game. He taught me how to play the game and how to compete.

With us both being hockey players this made for some interesting games. I can remember in one instance we were playing a game of road hockey and it got out of hand. I ended up on the receiving end of a wicked body check into my dad's car, which resulted in a huge dint in the driver's side door and also caused me to separate my shoulder. He may have taught me how to compete the hard way, but it worked. Hockey has taught me how to compete and how to channel my competitiveness. Without the game I might have channeled my competitive side on to negative things such as drinking or partying too much.

Hockey is fun for me and is a positive way I can express myself. The game and its competitive aspects have played a huge role in many areas of my life and have helped me a great deal.
