I have chosen to do my novel review on my one of my favourite books to read for fun: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth book in a series of seven. You have advised us to break up the book into four sections according to chapter number, but I thought I would do a slight variation on this. I have decided to break up the novel into four simple parts Introduction, Orientation, Plot Development and Conclusion. Since this book is written for a lower age category (although the underlying symbolism and sentence structure is more suited for a teen / adult audience), it is relatively easy to distinguish between these four parts, and they are present in all four books in the series. INTRODUCTION This part of the story encompasses the first eight or so chapters. It tells the reader about Harry's situation it tells us that Harry is a wizard, living in rural England.

This is one of the amazing feats accomplished by the books; Rowling creates for us a universe in which wizards and muggles (non-magical people) are easily rationalized as if one was telling a two-year-old about the simple facts of life. We are told how Harry's parents were killed by the evil Lord Voldemort when he was an infant, and how he was given to his unfeeling aunt and uncle by the wise wizard Dumbledore to be cared for at a young age. These are all things that are learnt in the first books, and I must recommend reading them before you can even consider reading The Goblet of Fire. Other things you pick up in this first section are about the magical community in which Harry exists; it is a society much like our own, it is governed by the Ministry of Magic and is completely hidden from the muggles. It explains that most English wizards go to a school called Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, and they all form a happy, Utopian society. Well, almost all of them.

There is a dark side to the Harry Potter series, one that has had the book banned from some of the more ignorant school boards (in my opinion) in our country. That dark side is controlled by the one they call Lord Voldemort, and his evil followers, the Death Eaters. Lord Voldemort used to reign terror on wizards and muggles alike, killing left and right seemingly for power and fun. He held the world in his iron grip, and was poised to take over as ruler when he met his doom. He was engaged in a routine activity, killing good wizards, when he came across the infant Harry and his parents, who were fighting the forces of evil. He dismissed them as easy bait, and he killed both of Harry's parents (Lily and James Potter) before he came across the baby Harry.

Then an odd thing happened. Voldemort tried to kill Harry with a deadly curse, but the spell rebounded off of Harry and hit Voldemort with full force, ripping his soul from his body. We learned in the second book that Harry's mother had performed a charm to protect Harry from such a curse. I know that I have written a small book on the introduction alone, but I believe that this part of the story is most crucial when trying to explain the universe to someone, as you cant leave them with any uncertainties about how dynamic forces work to influence the development of the characters and the plot.

ORIENTATION At this point in the book, we are familiarized to a good extent with the universe in which the story takes place. There are some wonderful action scenes that involve a wizarding game called Quidditch, in which Rowling uses descriptive passages to further explain the world she has created. In this part, which goes from about chapter nine to chapter eighteen, you meet for the first time such characters as Professor Dumbledore, the Hogwarts school headmaster, and Hagrid, the Hogwarts gamekeeper and Harry's friend. Rowling sets the stage for the rest of the plot, by introducing the Triwizard Tournament, which is an ancient and dangerous competition that involves three schools, with one champion per school. Of course, Harry is selected to enter the tournament. Here, Rowling utilizes good foreboding, which combines with Harry's alienation from the school to make a very highly emotional section.

PLOT DEVELOPMENT This part of the story goes from chapter eighteen to chapter thirty-one, and is where some of the best action occurs. Harry struggles through the first two of the three Triwizard tasks, the first of which he had to get past a dragon, the second he had to go underwater for an hour and save his friend Ron Weasley from the Mer people at the bottom of the Hogwarts lake. This is the part that sets the book apart from the ordinary and makes it shine. Rowling pulls out all of the stops as she describes the Triwizard tasks and makes you feel as if you were transported there. It is the mark of a good writer when you go through a few tense pages, after which you realize you have been holding the book in an iron grip because of the intensity of the writing. The plot twists and turns as Harry's beliefs and convictions shift and change.

You begin to see characters in a whole new light. Dumbledore hints about Voldemort's re-emergence to power, and Harry begins to get suspicions that Lord Voldemort may make his appearance at any time. Conclusion This is the adrenaline pumping termination of the book which encompasses chapters thirty-one through thirty-seven. Harry enters the final Triwizard task tied for first in points, and with high hopes of winning.

It all comes together as you put all the parts in their place and realize what will happen when Harry has completed the final task. Even if you dont have the whole plot figured out, you know something terrible will happen at the thrilling climax which includes, of course, a shocking showdown between Voldemort and Harry. But, of course, Harry survives the final encounter (he still has three more books to be in! ) even though others do not Superficially, this book outlines the extremes between right and wrong, and how friendships can change worlds. Deeper than that, thought, it displays the power of self-esteem and how it can profoundly effect your actions in being successful. When Harry first started out at Hogwarts, he had come from an oppressed family situation where he was friendless and alone. By the end of his first year at Hogwarts, he had accomplished more than he would ever have imagined possible and he had a new confidence in himself.

When it all comes down to it, this series is about a young, frightened boy trying to live up to his name, and struggling to overcome the same obstacles we face daily. This ending has me desperate to get my hands on the next book, with its teasing hints about the terror to come. I greatly look forward to the next book scheduled for release in November.
