The topic of pornography is widely controversial, and is deeply rooted into our cultural beliefs and trends. Although pornography has become readily available nowadays, it is an early sexual expression, that appears in almost every culture. The complexity of the subject develops from the individuality of human nature, and therefore the difficulty to withhold a clear definition of what should and what should not be considered pornographic. In general terms, pornography will be defined as any material that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement.

It can take the form of written, graphic, or oral representations of erotic subjects and is usually divided into two categories: soft-core, in which the erotic material is less explicit; and hard-core, in which the erotic content is more intense. Although in common usage pornography is often associated with obscenity, the latter is a legal term covering anything offensive to public morals, whereas the former refers specifically and exclusively to the erotic content. Although pornography is a longstanding phenomenon, it has become more readily available throughout the last decade. The effect of pornography on society is not yet understood, but to a certain extent, pornography works as a behavioral conditioner and stimulates violence, sexual discrimination, etc. According to recent reports, pornography appeared to be a significant factor in the chain of events leading to abnormal sexual behaviors in 25 % of the cases studied. Apparently, it leads to an association between sex and violence which provokes unhealthy attitudes towards the opposite sex and their sexual identities.

The fact is, pornography has and is determined to remain as a widely controversial issue over which most people would rather turn a blind eye, in order to avoid the crude reality. Sex, throughout history has been more than merely a method of procreation. Indeed, the human body is a natural part of life in all of its forms, so why do we regard the naked body as being obscene. We should understand that sex is not the real concern in pornography, but obscenity is.

Pornography seems to be a mixture of sex which is completely natural and nearly every person enjoys at one time or another and obscenity which is the element that provokes perversion. Yet one of the greatest attributes of sex, and one of the things that make it sacred are the feelings involved between the two people. Therefore we could conclude that if there are no feelings involved in pornography, it is merely acting, an extravagant or rather obscene form of performance. The question therefore is: In what ways can pornography be harmful and what problems could its partial or complete censorship lead to? These types of media degrade human beings by increasing physical, mental and sexual abuse against women, men, children and animals. These could provoke other people to experiment these feelings and they may also cause an increase in the violence against women.

In spite of this, substance abuse problems, and alcohol seem to be more directly involved in sexual abuse than pornography. The supporters of pornography believe that the world is filled with "obscene" things and we are just trying to avoid reality. Whether or not pornography and the internet, one of the greatest contributors to the subject; should be censored, has become an important issue of debate in the past decade and still remains unsolved. Recent studies have shown that 83. 5 % of the images available on the Internet are pornographic. Similarly, 47 % of the 11, 000 most popular searches on the Internet are targeted to pornography. Pornography on the Internet is readily available to everyone who happens to bump into them.

This is regarded as immoral and downright filthy by the people, and it denies human dignity and often stimulates the user to violent behavior. However, online users are not bombarded with grotesque pictures and hate groups. One has to deliberately go into such a site. However, as with drugs, alcohol and cigarettes, the problem with pornography is that no one is compelled to consume them, but it is rather, a personal decision. Moreover, there is no concrete approach to the definition of "obscene" or "offensive" materials.

It is a cultural belief, to differentiate a distasteful picture from a beautiful one, and it comes down to a matter of opinion. The materials are often considered obscene if they show offensive attitudes and lack serious scientific, literary, artistic, or political value. However, contemporary community standards vary according to regions and times. Similarly, these do not exist in the individuals and families in any comparable way, because we have different ideals and ethics on issues such as sexual content, nudity and pornography. Thus, to accept or reject the issue is a matter of personal opinion.

Proponents of a liberal attitude toward pornography argue that it is essentially a harmless diversion and may serve to relieve sexual tensions. However, pornography presents a degrading and socially harmful conception of women and tends to deprave and corrupt those whose minds are open to such immoral influences. To a certain extent, Censorship, like charity, should begin at home, but unlike charity it should end there. Massive exposure to pornography, such as with the Internet, is likely to cause irreparable damage to society.

Pornography has become an addiction like smoking or drinking, therefore, it should be treated as a drug and be regulated. However, as with all drugs, this industry has become a multimillion dollar business, therefore an attempt to do away completely with such a prosperous business would be virtually impossible. The only solution to this issue would be to take away the commercial end of it which makes millions based on the use of women, and does nothing at all to improve their social standing in our society. But passing laws restricting pornography from viewers would be similar to restricting cigarettes from smokers, and would provoke outrage and protest. For centuries governments have tried to regulate materials considered inappropriate or offensive, not so much for the protection of the people but for their own benefit.

Many modem governments are attempting to control access to the Internet. They are passing regulations that restrict the freedom people once took for granted, but trying to censor the Internet is problematic because the net is an international issue, there is no standard for judging materials, and censorship is a denial of democracy. Another problem emerges from the fact that laws that are meant for other types of communication will not necessarily apply to this medium. There are no physical locations where communications take place, making it difficult to determine where violations of the law should be prosecuted. There is anonymity on the Internet and so ages and identities are not known, this makes it hard to determine if illegal activities are taking place. The contents on the Internet are as diverse as human thought, therefore why should we suppress our ideas?

Allusions are made to sex in every aspect of our society. The Church's stand on pornography is clear and obvious and is adamantly against all pornography. The church states that pornography .".. offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other.

It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants, since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others. " The view of the church is that .".. civil authorities should prevent the production and distribution of pornographic materials. It is an unnatural act, an immoral human act. Although religions and social backgrounds may vary, this statement is likely to be widely accepted. The fact that pornography is not natural is very important, but, human sexual attitudes have never been natural when compared to our environment and all other forms of life on earth. Apparently, there was a sudden change in the evolution of human beings, when we stopped being innocent animals, and developed into animals with conscience of existence, animals with wisdom, semi gods.

But this made us embarrassed and ashamed of ourselves, so we covered up with clothes. Therefore, clothing was the first step and source for the development of pornography. So, in conclusion, pornography humiliates and degrades the human body for the purpose of erotic stimulation and pleasure. It has the power to ruin marriages, destroy trust, excite a person to the point of sexual crime, or create an unhealthy view of human sexuality of the opposite sex.

It exploits both the producer and the consumer and offers no benefit to our society.
