In the wake of what is undisputed one of the most destructive acts of terrorism ever seen by the world, America and her allies have been quick to condemn the perpetrators as unjustified, unprovoked extremists. The media has painted a picture of an evil regime intent on the shedding of innocent blood; motivated only by rage, hatred, jealously and sheer lunacy in the belief that this martyrdom will take them to paradise. Of course few in the west will doubt that the financial workers and tourists were blameless, and undeserving of the cruel fate which we have all seen emblazoned in our minds eye and replaying endlessly on our television screens as terrified men and women fall to their deaths, and the buildings that were the pride of New York fall to their destruction. Forming a sepulcher to the fallen victims and Americas national pride of the invincible.

With destruction on this scale, those of the world who observe such a tragedy might be more comfortable with the mass-murders, if the perpetuator's are thought of simply as evil men. James Rubin once a senior official in the US government recently said of the terrorists held responsible for this, the Taleban that they "have no agenda." This is an extremely convenient viewpoint to be held by the US government, and one to be boosted as much as possible by the media, as it effectively eradicates any possible apportioning of guilt. How can anyone be to blame for inflaming a regime which "has no agenda, [when] all they want is to destroy the West. " If they are simply motivated by fanaticism, fed by irrational hatred then surely America cannot be accused of having 'brought this one themselves'. However, the question which should be asked in furtherance to this conclusion, is what has given rise to anti-American feeling so strong that they have brought a regime to commit mass-murder. For many people vague statements regarding Jihad, religious fervor, Gulf war and misconceptions about American evil satisfy, but if one looks closer into individual incidents a pattern can be seen emerging. Almost since the bombing itself, and certainly since Osama Bin Laden came to prominence as the US's prime suspect, Islam and the fanatical belief in such has been cited as a primary cause, even as a motive for the terrorist strikes on the World Trade Centre Buildings.

It is known without a doubt that there were Moslems on the aircraft. In one case the two onboard are now thought to be the only passengers capable of flying an aircraft, as further evidence mounts against them. Bin Laden a Saudi by birth, and the Taliban authorities who thus far have been unit-operative in handing him over to the US are fiercely Islamic. Mere days after the attack itself we were met with scenes of rejoicing Moslem families in the streets, and news of Moslems in their hundreds being the victims of serious racial crime, as they are seen as the murderers. What could have led to such deep hatred of an entire nation, as is exhibited in many quarters of the Islamic religion? This is an area where the foreign policy towards the Middle East and its differing religious groups of the US must be closely scrutinized.

The Islamic notion of Jihad, their holy war, demonstrates perfectly why in any predominately Islamic society there will always be people willing to sacrifice their own lives. Already the Taliban have asked their fellow Moslems to prepare for a jihad with "the West." This is interesting wording, by stating that they are ready to go to war with the West they are possibly giving a key insight into their motivations in their attack on America. If their quarrel is really with the West, then this could be indicative that the attack on the World Trade Centre was in fact an attack on the whole of the western capitalist world, of which New York is the self proclaimed capital city, the home to the World Trade Buildings, a powerful image in the minds of all those who hate capitalism. To many America is a symbol of all that they detest, the question is whether this is due to any fault of the US, or has she simply excelled in the capitalist game, played by the West to such an extent that she has become a symbol of it? There is however, one other simple fact to remember, that since the World Trade Centre attack, almost all the Western countries have pledged support, whether practical or simply morally. Britain has stated that she will stand "shoulder to shoulder" with America in any coming conflict, and has already begun war preparations.

This effectual declaration of war against "the West" could be a simple interpretation of the fact that a military strike by NATO, or at least by a coalition of the US, UK and with the support of other UN countries seems increasingly likely. Perhaps simply sharing this common ideology, which offers no support to the smaller countries of the Middle East is enough to earn this enmity. This coalition of powers is in itself a point for contention. The original strike was seemingly only against America, the ensuing public feeling exhibited in several eastern countries was clearly Anti-American.

So why did other European countries feel obliged to enter into a situation which now seems likely to culminate in war? Undoubtedly the slowdown of the American economy, and the resulting fall of Wall Street has had a disastrous effect on the global economy, but more directly on the markets of Britain and to a lesser extent the rest of the EU. This would show that the Taliban had in their sights, not only America but also her allies. Our own economy is now (according to many financial analysts) on the brink of recession, with almost half a million redundancies foreseen in the City alone, however the smaller economies of the Middle East are hit considerably less hard by such changes in the 'Global' economy, some would say that there is even a possibly advantageous situation for countries such as Afghanistan. One could hypothesize that one of the qualms many in the east have about America, is their sway over the west of the world. Particularly with the increasingly dominant role of the UN and NATO, the US is seen by many as the ruler of the world, a view held by Americans and aliens alike.

The EU recently has tried to diminish the UK's role in NATO with the formation of a new European defense coalition, one of several sparring rounds Europe has had with America. With organizations such as NATO and the G 7 holding such sway over world affairs, and so often interfering with other countries, it is easy to see how these countries could hold a lasting resentment over these unbelievably powerful alliances. A perfect example of this is the Gulf war, where both Britain and America launched an attack on Iraq following its invasion of Kuwait. This may now, seem to have been the right course of action, with the war won and Saddam Hussein allegedly having shown his true colors as a terrorist, a tyrant and a lunatic. In this case as in many others the Americans and their allies stepped into a conflict, against someone who until then had had no quarrel with them. In what could easily be seen as meddling in the affairs of an area where their influence was not welcome, that is until fighting book...
