Pip's childish perceptions are shown by the narrator's description of his fanciful images of objects, such as his parents' tombstones: "The shape of the letters on my father's, gave me an odd idea that he was a square, stout, dark man, with curly black hair. From the character and turn of the inscription "Also Georgiana Wife of the Above", I drew a childish conclusion that my mother was freckled and sickly. " (p. 3). This personal comic reflection made by Pip prevents Pip's story from sounding too self-pitying. By narrating Pip's insights and point of vues on morose subjects, the reader is enlightened by the irony of his remarks.
His childish misunderstandings are explained by his naivete. For example, Mrs. Joe's comment on how people put in Hulks "always begin by asking questions" (p. 15) is interpreted so seriously by Pip that he is drawn into dread: " I felt fearfully sensible of the great convenience that the Hulks were handy for me. I was clearly on my way there. I had begun by asking questions... " (p. 15). Placing Mrs.
Joe with an anecdote is useful for introducing the catchphrase which is: "brought up by hand." The anecdote gives an explanation to the phrase, which is Mrs. Joe's beatings and ass ailments of the hand that are inflicted upon Pip and Joe. Phillip Pirrip, late of this parish, and also Georgianna wife of the above, were dead and buried; and that Alexander, Bartholomew, Abraham, Tobias, and Roger, infant children of the aforesaid, were also dead and buried; " (p. 3). The main reason for Pip stealing so much food from Mrs. Joe is that he is afraid of the convict and the mysterious young man who hides with him: " I was in mortal terror of the young man who wanted my heart and liver; I was in mortal terror of my interlocutor with the ironed leg; " (p. 15). Pip feels that if he fulfills his duty by bringing them a lot of food, they will leave him safe and sound. An example of a manifestation caused by his fear is shown when he saves his meal of bread and butter for the convict, despite his appetite: "On the present occasion, though I was hungry, I dared not eat my slice. I felt that I must have something in reserve for my dreadful acquaintance, and his ally the still more dreadful young man [... ] therefore I resolved to put my hunk of bread and butter down my trousers. " (p. 10) Pip is so petrified that he grabs anything in sight from Mrs.
Joe's cupboards: "I had no time for anything, for I had no time to spare. I stole some bread, some rind of cheese, about half a jar of mincemeat, some brandy from a stone bottle, a meat bone with very little on it, and a beautiful round compact pork pie. " (p. 16). Since Pip is in a hurry, he does not pay any attention to the quantity of food he is taking. Pip's impatience also impels him to disregard the consequences of his actions. Although it is Christmas eve and the pantry is more supplied than usual he does not associate the pork pie in the pantry with the holiday feast: .".. I took it, in hope that it was not intended for early use, and would not be missed for some time. " (p. 16).
Another reason might be that the abundance of food makes Pip think that Mrs. Joe will not notice that anything has been stolen: "In the pantry, which was far more abundantly supplied than usual, owing to the season... " (p. 15). Instalment Two (Chapters 3 and 4) First of all Pip suffers abuse in the sense that he is put into a position of minority and rejection. Pip is squeezed into a corner of the table, is not allowed to speak and must suffer the "Pumblechookian elbow" (p. 25) in his eye while receiving the worst scraps of food.
Not only is Pip abused by his sister but by the Christmas guests when they accuse Pip of ungratefulness in the most part of their conversation. Pip's depression is expressed: "I might have been an unfortunate little bull in a Spanish arena, I got so sparingly touched up by these moral goads. " (p. 25) The first example of this attack against Pip is when Mr. Hubble glares at Pip while concluding that lack of gratitude in young persons is the result of their being naturally vicious: "Why is it that the young are never grateful? [... ] Naturally wic ious. .".. and (everybody) looked at me in a particularly unpleasant and personal manner. " (p. 26). Pumblechook then insults Pip while referring to Swine: "What is detestable in a pig, is more detestable in a boy. " (p. 27).
