The novel, The Member of the Wedding was written by Carson McCullers. Frankie from the member of the wedding and Holden from The Catcher in The Rye, have many similarities. Both characters have trouble during adolescence because they are lonely, they cant communicate well with adults and both characters feel alienated from society in general. Frankie from The Member of the Wedding is very lonely. Frankie has only two friends in the novel, Bernice and John Henry. Bernice is the maid and John Henry is a much younger boy that lives next door.

She is upset because everyone else is in a club except her. Holden from The Catcher in The Rye is also a lonely adolescent. Whenever he feels lonely he always has the urge to call somebody. Also, Holden is a compulsive liar. He wants people to think he is interesting so they will talk to him. Frankie besides being lonely, is a pre-teen who finds it very hard to communicate with adults.

Frankie never talks to her father. Also, she finds it very hard to tell Janice and Jarvis how she feels at their wedding. Holden also cant communicate well with adults; he resembles Frankie a lot in this way. Holden lied about everything in his conversation with Mrs. Marrow, including his name. Also, when he is talking to the nuns he blew cigarette smoke in their faces.

Alienation is the final feeling these two characters have in common. Frankie feels alienated from society because nobody cares about her or finds her interesting. She also alienated when she realizes that Janice and Jarvis didnt want her as much as she wanted them and that they wanted a life of their own. Holden, like Frankie, Also feels alienated from society. He believes that everyone is a bunch of phonies because they are not like him. He also feels alienated when he realizes that he is also a phony.

He always says glad to meet you even when he isnt glad to have met that person. Both novels explore adolescent problems growing up. The novels characters have trouble growing up because they feel lonely, have trouble talking to adults and they feel alienated from society in general.
