Although climbing the same black, rusted stairway to his third floor Brooklyn apartment reminded him of the absence of luxury in his life, Peter was nevertheless happy to return home to his loving lady after a grueling day of masonry. Spending eight hours on your knees, hunched over a slab of concrete would however, make returning to his humble abode seem like returning to a town house in the upper-east side to most people. Roxanne's day was much like Peters in that trying to teach 37 eleven year olds with a two minute attention span when the subject is anything other than the Yankees, how to do long division, can be as exhausting as laying bricks. Not to mention Roxanne's day wasnt over at the two thirty bell. She supervised the schools recreational program, which required her presence every day because nobody else wanted to spend their afternoon organizing and sometimes even participating in everything from kickball to jump rope. Roxanne and Peters day ended at about the same time so they would often ascend those steps together, hand in hand, mindless of the days finished labor and rejuvenated by the presence of one another.

The other man in Roxanne's life was her father who she loved dearly despite his sometimes violently irritable temperament, a result of his addiction to booze and a liver on the verge of a break down. Roxanne supported her father completely. She knew it was pathetic that her father was so irresponsible and that he found no shame in expecting his daughter to pay his medical bill, and so did Peter, who would have been furious to know that his wife was financially supporting a worthless drunk, even if it was her father, but forced by love, she did it anyway. Unfortunately the weekly checks from the public school system were barely enough to sustain herself and her life with Peter, let alone her dying father so she had to do something else. Every time Roxanne's father would find her and introduce a new financial request, she would put on her red dress and sell her body. She knew this was a despicable act, but it was like there was no choice.

She would have sacrificed her own life for her father, letting him waste away was not an option. No other occupation would have allowed her to make fast money whenever necessary and at the same time be kept secret from Peter, whom she loved equally as much as her father and did not want to lose. Peter had his mind set on children, it was his most passionate desire in life, but the two held back mindful of the financial burden they were not prepared for. It killed him to think that he could never afford a child.

If he knew Roxanne was working another job but giving away her pay check to a cause he so scorned, he may have disowned her. Unfortunately for Roxanne, Peter, normally a deep sleeper, started to notice when she would discreetly slip out of bed and into the night. He thought it a dream the first few times though and returned to his slumber mindless of his wifes absence. One night however, Peter woke up when, rolling over expecting to embrace the sleeping Roxanne, he grabbed nothing but empty sheets. Instantly Peter realized his dreams were reality. He waited there eyes open, restless, until the early morning when Roxanne returned, still wearing her red dress that he never would have seen hanging among her modest wardrobe.

Where the hell have you been and what the hell is that little girls dress youre wearing! Clearly found out, there was no escape for Roxanne. She could not lie to Peters face. Her love for him was too strong. Im so sorry baby, its just that my father needs me, there was no other way I didnt want to Enough! he screamed.

You fucking bitch! How could you do this to me? Dont I love you enough right here in this bed? Leave now. Get the fuck out of here. Go live in the street with that drunk.

Roxanne felt like she was dying. Peter I love you, you are my life. I am not whole without you. I live for you.

All of this was true, but Peter refused to accept it. Didnt you hear me! Take your goddamn red dress and get out of my house. Go on being a whore for the rest of your sorry life. She packed a bag of clothes and some other items and descended the same black rusty stairway feeling betrayed. Her love for Peter burned still just like every other day.

Being a prostitute was not her desire, she had to help her father. It was the only way. One year later Roxanne's father died. Perhaps her cause was a futile one from the start, but she was unconditionally devoted to him. Her equal devotion to Peter was still alive, though he no longer requited the feeling. Peter went ahead and met a new woman who not only did well for herself financially, but she was also eager to start a family.

Anne worked as a secretary for an investment firm in the city where she commuted every day. A kind-hearted girl, she reminded Peter of the Roxanne he once loved, but he was now more partial to Anne because with an income that did not resemble a Brooklyn school teachers, she provided the opportunity to start a family. Eventually Peter forgot his previous life with Roxanne. Seeing that staircase and their old apartment did not spark even the slightest feeling of nostalgia.

The couple got married and moved to someplace, and soon enough they had a little girl who they named hayley. Peters life changed drastically. His arduous days of labor were ended when his retiring boss asked him to take over the company, which still required hard work, but nothing like before. The two moved out of Brooklyn and into a comfortable apartment in Manhattan. Roxanne too moved out of Brooklyn hoping to escape the torment of her memories of Peter and her life with him there. She rented a one-room apartment and paid the bills the same way she did for her father.

She was destroyed by the loss of Peter and was never the same mentally after he abandoned her. She no longer had the patience to be a school teacher because no longer was there the pleasant thought of love keeping her sane during that long day, and prostitution was the only other thing she knew. It was a little after eleven one night when Anne saw this woman in a red dress, arms crossed, cigarette in hand, waiting for a customer and was overtaken with pity. Anne approached the woman and said, You know you dont have to do this.

Its all I know anymore was Roxanne's reply. Anne felt obliged to help this woman for some reason and offered her a new job. She explained, I live a busy life. I work from 8 to 5 and have a baby to care for and a husband to love.

Things get hectic and I could often use a hand around the house. How would you like to be my helper, a housekeeper if you will. Roxanne was reminded that people are in fact compassionate and she thankfully accepted Annes offer. Good then, now get off this street and meet me tomorrow at six oclock, 129 36 th street apartment B. Im Anne by the way, and I dont believe I caught your name.

Roxanne, Roxanne Simmons, and thank you so much, Ill see you tomorrow. Anne had just said goodbye to Peter, who was on his way to a coworkers house to play cards, when Roxanne rang the bell. Oh Hi, Im glad youve come, and that outfit is much more flattering for yourself, I love that scarf. Oh thanks, yeah that red dress isnt really me. And its great to be here. Where do I start?

Anne was very pleased both with Roxanne's decision to come and that she had brought a struggling woman off the streets. She always believed that those women were human enough to deserve the same basic respect that all people do. After showing her around and explaining what she expected to be done, Anne left her new housekeeper alone as she was eager to give her daughter some attention. Roxanne started to clean the master bedroom when a framed photo caught her eye, and then instantly she recognized Peter. His perfectly straight white teeth were unmistakable even from far away.

The same overwhelming passion she once felt for him was back upon her, only it was no longer out of love but instead out of hate. She thought to herself, How can he do this. I loved him. He loved me, I know he did.

I would have done anything for him, why cant he understand my devotion to my father. Goddamn it! Im only human. Tears gushing from her eyes, Roxanne ran down the smooth wooden stairs, yelling so that Anne could hear, Im sorry I cant do this. She slammed the door but did not leave the house. Mindful of where Anne was in the house, she silently crept back up the stairs into the bedroom and hid in the closet.

She would take revenge. It felt like two days, but really only two hours later Peter returned from his night of cards and drinking, excited to see his wife. It wasnt long before the two were madly undressing each other, an almost unbearable sight to Roxanne, who, if she had been able to see more than the small slits in the closet door would allow, would have jumped out right away. She held back however, waiting until the two were most vulnerable. And finally, she broke out of the closet brandishing the small knife she always had in her purse. Roxanne who could feel no mercy for Anne despite her kindness, smashed the bedside ceramic lamp against her head knocking her unconscious and then with one swipe of her knife, removed Peter of his manhood.
