There were all kind of feelings going trough my mind as read the S. E. Hinton novel The Outsiders. Envy, love, roughness, strength, happiness... which leads me to think of this novel as a dramatic humorist nonfiction story that represents the reality that a society in every place in earth has to face with.
There are always to sides: the good ones and the bad ones. Obviously it is not possible to define each one because there are different ways of setting a preference for who is the good or the bad. The Socs are the privilege kids from the West that as the word Soc means society, they have nice cars, they are rich and they live for bluffing. The greasers are the unprivileged ones who live in the poor side and have to put up with the Socs attacks, in both moral and physical ways. A special detail to look at are the changes the protagonist undergoes during the novel which I think is the one of the main purposes the author wants us to pay special attention at since the whole plot is based on Pony's feelings and expectation for his life. In every story there are certain events that will always stay nor just in our memory but also in the most deep side of our hearts which will make us remember the story forever.
This events happen along the story and besides telling it, they describe the characters letting us know how they react to different situations. This novel has different stages in which we an easily identify each character by the specific details described from each one. The most shocking events in The Outsiders are very remarkable. Ponyboy, which is the central character in the plot, gets jumped by the Socs as hes walking home back from the movie theater.
His gang including both of his brothers rescue him and he gets a little beaten up but nothing to worry about. After that incident things cool for awhile. Pony and Johnny (Pony's best friend) go to the movies and meet some girls. They introduce themselves and immediately notice this girls are Socs.
They make friends with them and they walk the girls to their house. Suddenly the girls boyfriends caught them and take the girls with them without making any trouble. After a few hours (which was already late for Pony being in the streets) Pony arrives home and Darry, Pony's oldest brother, hits him after giving him a speech of why he shouldnt be on the street so late. Full with anger Pony leaves the house and catches Johnny at the park where he left him a couple of hours before. After a good reflection with the help of his pal, the boy decides to walk back home with his friend. As they approach home, five Socs jump them in revenge for talking with their girlfriends Cherry and Marcia (the girls from the movies).
Johnny, as he sees how theyre killing his best friend, in a desperate act uses his blade and kills one Soc. Not knowing what in world to do, the boys ran to look for their friend Dallas Winston or better known as Dally. Dally worried for what would happen to his friends, helps them and gives them money, a loaded gun and some instructions how to make to the place he told them to hide until he met them and told them what the next step would be. After a travesty in a train and miles away from home, the boys settle in an old abandoned church and five days from the tragedy, finally Dally meets them. Suddenly, when they are a few kilometers away from the place and about to return home, a fire begins in the church and 5 kindergarten kids kept inside. Due to the situation, Ponyboy, Johnny and Dally run to rescue the 5 children who wouldve probably die if it wasnt for them.
The incident finished with Ponyboy having a few non important burns, Dallas with some sever injures and Johnny highly burned and a huge damage on his back bones. At the hospital where the new heroes are taken a scene of reconciliation is seen as Darry and Soda arrive to see how their kid brother is doing. Reporters are everywhere and interview the hole family of Ponyboy the hero and his also hero friends. Pony is OK to leave the hospital and rests at home.
The next day, a fight between Socs and Greasers is planned. Socs fight for their Bob (their dead friend) and Greasers fight for their discrimination and liberty of walking peacefully on the street without being frightful of been jumped by some Soc. The fight takes place in a alley and the rules are no weapons. Greasers successfully win the fight and finally feel relief. Johnny dies at the hospital and leaves Ponyboy a message he didnt quite understood at first, Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold... (57).
The shocking fact that the only thing Dally really loved, broke him down into 1000 pieces and finally let all his feelings out. In a desperate act of violence, Dally gets killed. Ponyboy enters a stage of depression after his two friends are killed and theres a possibility of being separated from his brothers which annoys him all the time and keeps him distracted from school. A fight between the three brothers is held. This fight leads Pony to analyze the past recent events.
He gets to a conclusion and decides to tell everyone he knows and farther about his story and how Greasers are always jumped.
