Slavery originated in Africa. It was a punishment for those who broke the law. It also was part of the wars in Africa. However, slavery in Africa was more like indentured slavery. Those enslaved had a certain amount of time to serve. It was a way of putting back what was wronged.

Slavery was never at the magnitude, until it got to America. When slavery first entered into America, it was more so indentured slavery. This is when people would work for their transportation over to the colonies and would be free after serving five to seven years in servitude. The colonists tried to enslave Indians also, but were unable to due to the fact when they escaped they were able to find refuge in the outskirts.

Takaki, also wrote about how the Irish were indentured servants, but they had problems with them running away with black slaves and also sleeping with them. The colonist of Virginia thought that white slaves were too costly and were a high risk for flight. They decided that white indentured servants would serve their terms and receive fifty acres of land and some other attributes like a gun for their service. This was the beginning of the peculiar institution.

Once the white slaves where on their way out the colonists saw fit to enslave the blacks for life. They began to make laws that hindered slaves from all freedoms. They were considered the property of plantation owners and could be bought and sold at any time. The blacks that happened to be free were not allowed to hold office, bear arms, testify in court, or vote. Colonists put more restrictions on mixed children and whether or not they were considered black or white for the purpose of having more slaves.

In my opinion, and in Takaki and Hackers, slavery was an institution. Cornell West and Hacker, gave the best descriptions of what is like to be black and in America after slavery. With the ideas, of Dsouza, I was able to see exactly what blacks were working against. Dsouza believed that blacks are due nothing. He believed that blacks benefited from being slaves. He thought that without it blacks would have never gotten the chance to be in America in the first place.

And, after all look at how America is doing compared to Africa. Cornell and Hacker establish that it was ideas of inferiority, laziness, stupidity, and other suppressive messages that have placed blacks in such a poor stricken state now. Plus, it was not just an instantaneous equality that blacks had. They are still fighting to receive equal treatment in jobs, housing and much more. Racism expresses itself in three ways according to Hacker. The first way is individualism.

Racism in this form is when one person feels discriminated against in an individual way. For instance, when a black person walks into a predominately white store and all of the security attention has been changed to focus in on that individual person. Another example would be the one that Hacker used about the taxicab drivers who choose not to pick up black passengers for fear of being robbed or having to go into a seedy neighborhood. Blacks are discriminated against for the wrong of all of their people. They are not seen as one person that is separate from the rest. So, therefore, they suffer for the collective individually.

To clarify, individual racism is when one person discriminates against another person. This is a singular form of racism. The second form of racism that Hacker describes is institutional racism. This is when an institution discriminates against a race for the same unfair and biased reasons as one person would on an individual bases, but now in an organizational form. An example of this would be police departments racial profiling. This is when they pick up any person that fits the profile of the criminal they are looking for, except they pick up anyone that matches the color description.

Thirdly are the attitudes about Africa. This I feel is the worst because people take what little they have learned or have been told about Africa and apply it to a whole people. It is done through all of the expressions of racism, yet this is the one where people who have never even seen Africa make assumptions on what minuscule glimpses they receive from reading the newspaper to watching television. In order to answer the question, is racism only black and white I must first define racism. Racism is a set of ideas and attitudes that express inferiority between races and lead to action. Since, there are many races outside the scope of black and white the answer to the question is no.

Racism is a reality for other cultures like the Indians. They have been moved from their land and had tribes wiped out. They have suffered from the same types of discrimination that blacks have. The Asians have seen racism at its finest during World War II, when they were imprisoned just because of there ancestry. The Arabs of today are seeing a hard time because a few of there people who have different views. The Arabs at Temple University have been threatened just because they look like the terrorist on television.

I must make one note thou, Blacks are the ones that have been suppressed for the longest. They are the ones who have never truly been given the chance to become complete Americans. They are discriminated against in their workplaces, communities, and in life in general. Yes, others have felt what is like to be hated, yet not to the magnitude that blacks have. We as a society have not been able to eradicate racism because we are still distinguishing people by race. We still ask for race on important documents like the census.

We divide by color on a university bases. For example, The Black Student Union. Even though we allow all races to join for some reason backs feel the need to start something that completely represents them, in order to have their voices heard. Another reason is because we are so good at saying that we tolerate each other, but we do not accept one another. In order, for society to move from the past it must realize that our past is part of our make up.

Blacks have not received as much as we would like to believe. We have come a long way, but we must strive to go further.
