Introduction: In February 1995, Li Dexian, an evangelist from Guangzhou, was about to address a house-church meeting in Beixing township, near Had city in Guangdong, when police officers arrived. According to reports, they kicked him in the groin in front of the congregation, then took him to the police station where he was beaten with a heavy pole, jumped on and kicked by police officers until he started to vomit blood. When he asked why he was beaten, the police officers reportedly said that they had been given instructions from higher up to take action against this form of religion. One month later, police launched another raid on the monthly house-church meeting in Beixing township and again beat Li Dexian.
The incident was witnessed by a visiting Australian Missionary. Chinese Torture is the severe punishment that the Chinese government is doing to mostly innocent people. Article five from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, states that everyone should have freedom from torture, and degrading treatment. Article 7 states that everyone should have his / her right to equality before the law.
Article 9 says that every person should have freedom from arbitrary arrest, and exile. Article 12 declares that every person has his / her freedom from interference with privacy, family, home, and correspondence. The last Article is number 20. This pronounces that people should have the right of peaceful assembly and association. All these articles that are listed above, are all related to the topic of torture. Many people believe that humans have evolved to point at which they would not make one another suffer, but China has proven us wrong, and hundreds of people die each week in unimaginable ways.
Background: Inhumane actions have occurred in China over thousands of years. Torture was considered an Ancient Art. It was used by the government for a long time to keep order in the nation. It was very severe and harsh, and according to a lot of cases, it is considered to be one of the most painful ways to punish people. There are a variety of different brutal Chinese tortures, for example, severe beating with fists or a variety of instruments and / or kicking. Another is the use of electric batons, which give powerful electric shocks.
Some tortures, like using handcuffs, shackles or ropes to tie prisoners in ways which cause intense pain, are very slow and painful. Suspension by the arms or feet, often combined with beatings, and exposure to extreme cold or heat, is a common one. The uses of live electric wires to give electric shocks, the use of trained dogs to attack prisoners are common. The insertion of sticks or needles under the nails or having fingernails pulled out is another element in Chinese torture.
One torture that is not as painful as the others, is the use of unidentified injections which causes the victim to become mentally unbalanced or to lose the ability to speak coherently. This method is a very dangerous one because it can mess up the persons brain and might lose some important memories. There are two that are commonly used for torturing males more than females; they are the insertion of pepper, chili powder or other substances in the mouth, nose or genital organs. The other is the insertion of horse hair or wires into the penis.
All these tortures are dangerous and painful, but the UN isnt doing much to help or to solve the problems, and neither is China! Current Situation: Torture is common all around China. Chinese law prohibits some tortures, but they have failed to assign the right people to end torture and stop it from happening. People in China are afraid to be tortured if they protest because of many gruesome stories theyve heard. The Chinese press barely writes about torture but when they do they are usually very brief articles.
They are also very quiet about the treatment of the prisoners, probably because they are afraid too. Thousands of people have been arbitrarily arrested, in the region over the past few years and it is still continuing. The police often beat, kick, and electric shock many of the prisoners. The prisoners that are victims to torture are the less educated, less privileged, (such as workers, peasants, old people, the unemployed, and children. ) There have been 25, 400 death sentences, and over 16, 605 executions of Chinese people in the past eight years. That means more people have been executed every year in China then the rest of the world put together.
Another torture problem in China is that people are being put to death for nonviolent offences. Protesters and people who practice their own religion, and teach have been tortured too. Here are some of the stories: On May 1995, a man called Jigme Gyatso, was tortured by police on suspicion of supporting the Tibetan Independence Movement. He was beaten until he was unable to move his hands and feet, possibly suffering from brain damage. His family had to pay the police to release him. Many reports have been received from victims of the prisons who have been tortured; the story below came from the relative of a seventeen-year-old prisoner: There were so many prisoners that they had to put at least six people in small tiny jail cells.
This did not allow them to lie down so they had to take turns sleeping. Whenever policemen visited them they were beaten. The prisoners who were selected for interrogation were taken to a special room where they were beaten, kicked and given electric shocks. Some prisoners were tied to a rail for the whole day by one hand and a foot. When they were released the prisoners werent able to stand. Some prisoners had their nails pulled out with pliers of had wires inserted into them.
Some prisoners had paper shoved up their anus by interrogation and then were set on fire. To pull his relative out of prison he had to pay. Prisoners all over China are taken to courts barely conscious and are unable to walk. The Chinese people continue giving unfair trials, and continue to torture and kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people. Current Solutions: Day by day, the United Nations looking helplessly at China- watching hundreds of people die each week due to torture. The main cause of this is that since our world has gotten so interconnected, no one can do anything without causing a world-wide problem.
Since China is a major producer of goods around the world, no one just goes in without causing a financial meltdown. And that is what everyone in the world has come to today- worrying about ourselves. That is why right now it seems that the most popular current solution to the torture problem in China that the world and the United Nations has done is to just sit down and watch hundreds of people die each week. People would blame the United Nations for not even caring about the situation in China when the UNs hands are tied.
A human rights group called Amnesty International has begged the United Nations many times to try to urge the Chinese to change their ways, but it just doesnt seem to be working. Amnesty International has asked that the Chinese invite a United Nations special reporter on torture to investigate the matter. They also said that they would like to encourage the Chinese government to sign and ratify different torture documents but the Chinese disagreed on signing that too. The only good news coming out of this is that we have to keep trying and nagging to China until they finally do change their ways. Proposed Solutions: Communism is one of the main doors that leads to disaster. As long as communism is still in power in China, most of the people being tortured will suffer greatly.
Whenever a common person has an idea to share or wants to practice his or her religion, they are under the pressure of being taken in by the police. You could be a pedestrian crossing a street, a cashier in a supermarket, or even a politician and you would be under the risk of being rushed at by a herd of policemen. Communism is the cause of this phobia. But China is not the only one that should get the blame; the United Nations should also be talked about. The United Nations should use their power as an advantage and move in. They should go into prisons, police stations, and the Chinese government headquarters and force them to stop torture.
Ideas, inventions and new ways of life will never spread if the people do not get a chance to express what they believe. If they do express what they believe, they get tortured in harsh ways. The people of China have had to suffer by keeping their ideas bottled up and never telling anyone about them. If the United Nations plays nice and keeps ignoring the faint calls from tortured people, a lot more people are going to have difficult lives. It has been over fifty years since the foundation of the United Nations; that means fifty years of ignoring China and its tortured victims. The United Nations has had a mental block with the China issue during the fifty years since its foundation.
If they dont do anything about it and another fifty years pass by, over 1, 000, 000 people would have been killed from torture related deaths. That averages 20, 000 people dead each year. Even though these numbers are outstanding, the real number is probably much higher than that. Most people can easily tell that if the United Nations doesnt do anything about this soon, they are going to have a huge problem on their hands in the future.
Conclusion: Years have past and torture has still roams greatly around China. Hundreds of people have been killed. Its not only the Chinese fault, but our fault as well. We havent done anything and neither has the U. N, which should have done something earlier. The Chinese have violated many of the Human Rights Articles for many years, and they havent stopped.
