On September 11 America witnessed the worst tragedy it has ever seen. As Americans we think that we have freedom and that we are secure, but the truth is, were not. In a span of no more that three hours, America was brought to its knees with a powerful blow from a group of terrorists. Planes going to California started crashing into buildings in New York, Washington D. C. and Pennsylvania the country was under attack.
The very thing that makes America the greatest county in the world was under attack, our freedom. Word started getting out and people were in shock and more so in disbelief. I personally heard about it when I was in school and I refused to believe what I was being told. Every news and radio station was covering the breaking news. Even regular channels paused their programming to cover the situation at hand. As the day progressed more and more information was coming out about who was behind this horrible act.
With the missing count in the thousands in New York and the death count already in the hundreds in Washington the terrorists had us in a choke hold. All of out nations airspace was closed, airports were shut down and businesses were closed. These attacks had literally shut down our country. People had been calling loved ones that were in the World Trade Center only to find that their cell phones would not work because the main antennas were situated on top of the Twin Towers. Dozens of New York firefighters and police officers had rushed into the towers before they collapsed and were feared to be dead.
Entire companies were lost during the collapses. As news stations started showing video of the events this fantasy became a reality for everybody around the country. Americans across that nation were starting to come together and show a great deal of patriotism. We all started to come together and comport each other. The mayor of New York Rudolf Julian was and has been amazingly supportive and helpful in our time of need. Thousands of people were left out of jobs and in desperate need of money.
The families of victims were also flocking to the armory in New York to try and locate their loved ones and also to report whether or not they were missing. But the puzzling question of who was behind all of this was still unanswered. The F. B.
I. and the president were working day and night to try and answer this question. They speculated that it was the doing of the most well know international terrorist Osama Bin Laden. But as much as were after him we were also after the country of Afghanistan, which is harboring Bin Laden. As the days turned into weeks the government was still not quite sure how to retaliate against the attacks. President Bush had immediately declared a war on terrorism, which was what Americans needed to hear.
With the world on our side we were able to respond in any way we saw fit. But we also had to be careful in our plan because we did not want to kill any civilians. All we were after was the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden. So as weeks turned to months there was still no action being taken and Americans were starting to become very restless and questioning the authority of our nations government. But We did not have to wait very long. On Sunday October 7, word got out that we had begun bombing carefully picked military targets in Afghanistan.
We were also getting help from great Britain and the northern alliance. This much anticipated attack was only the first in a long string of attacks on these targets. During the attacks a video recording had been played for the public, which contained Osama Bin Laden. In this video he talked about the attacks, which he did not claim any reasonability for but commended. He also told America that we would not know peace until all troops are pulled out of his Holy Land. He also exclaimed that he and his followers were ready for Jihad or Holy War.
This video was quickly taken off the air when some government officials suspected that Bin Laden was sending encrypted messages to certain cells of his alida terrorist network in his video. Since the attacks security around the country has been heightened. The National Guard has been patrolling airports and traffic going into and out of major cities is being closely monitored. The latest scare in America is one that deals with the chemical anthrax. In Boca Raton Florida one man has dies and another mad was tested positive to anthrax. There were also mysterious letters sent to N.
B. C. with a brown powder that was tested positive to anthrax. As America recovers from the events of September 11 we are becoming stronger and stronger. And as war rages in Afghanistan we can only hope that we can attack terrorism at its core and ultimately rid it from the world. We hope that this can be accomplished and that the world can live in peace.
For now we can only remember.
