Over 11, 000 years ago there existed an island nation located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, populated by a noble and powerful race. The people of this land possessed great wealth thanks to the natural resources found throughout their island. The island was a center for trade and commerce. The rulers of this land held sway over the people and land of their own island and well into Europe and Africa. This was the island of Atlantis (Keyes page 1 of 4). Atlantis was one of many myths of Ancient Greece.

These myths were an important aspect of the Ancient Greek culture, and each myth unravels a new story that has been told for centuries, true or untrue these tales are truly amazing, and the story of Atlantis was one of the best and well known of all the myths. The original story starts at the very beginning of time when the great gods divided the Cosmos between them, Poseidon the lord of the Ocean took possession of a chain of islands stretching from Spain to Central America. The great god discovered that the people of the island were singularly handsome and intelligent, he found that the island was more beautiful than anywhere else in the world. Every leaf on every tree glistened as brilliantly as an emerald, and the rolling pastureland's were as sleep, and green as the waves of Summer Sea (Jessie page 1 of 6). Poseidon had nonetheless discovered a perfect Utopia. During his exploration of his new island he was climbing the largest hill on the islands, and at the top he found the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and her name was Cleito.

The god fell in love with this woman and had 10 sons with her. There first born child was named Atlas and from this name he named his island Atlantis. All though Poseidon was very much in love with Cleito, he still had a very jealous and distrustful personality and decided to isolate her and protect her on his island by putting her on a hill in the center of Atlantis and digging three great moats around the grand hill. As the gods sons grew older he made all ten of them the kings of Atlantis and each responsible for one tenth of the Grand Island. The island adopted many arts and technology and built a canal into the island so that traders could go in and out of the island. The people were smart and ran the island well, and they often had festivals celebrating their special arts and talents for the ten kings.

The people in the city visited cultures all over the world and taught them things they needed to survive, they taught the Egyptians how to build pyramids and the Greeks how to construct Atlantes. Soon the kings of the island realized they were giving to the entire world, but have received nothing from them, therefore they decided they all needed to serve Atlantis and they embarked upon a conquest of the world. They conquered many races and countries, until one day they set out to battle Athens. They were extremely outnumbered and had a huge bloody battle and eventually were forced to surrender and return to their ships to leave.

As the men fled to the ships, a sudden a natural disaster happened, completely destroying Atlantis and wiping out the population and the entire island of Atlantis which was never seen again. People are still debating what happened that mysterious day and how the grand city vanished, and what caused the tragedy. One of the largest debates about the Myth of Atlantis is how the island vanished the day of the lost battle in Athens. The original story was Poseidon was angered by the Athenian victory, and punished his people with total destruction (Jessie page 3 of 6). Others say that on that day an Atlantean discovered the forbidden secrets of the cosmos, released the forces, and eventually destroyed all of mankind. Many scientists have different theories of what happened, one of the most valued opinions is by the Greek philosopher Plato (427 - 347 BC).

He was the first to study all aspects of the lost world of Atlantis and had a theory about the disappearance of the ancient lost city, Plato believed The Atlantean hoplite's succeeded in stemming the tide, prepared a terrible retribution for the men who betrayed the ancient faith of Atlantis, afterwards there occurred violent earthquakes and floods; and in a single day and night of misfortune. the island of Atlantis disappeared into the depths of the sea (Luce 12). Some scientist and geographers think that the disaster that may have destroyed Atlantis was the worst natural disasters of all time, there was a violent volcanic cataclysm, and with a bang of such enormous size it was heard around the world. The island was blasted into dust, caving in the entire island, then enormous tsunamis of gigantic size came rushing upon the city hiding from the human eye for all time.

How, if, and why the island disappeared is a big mystery, but many skeptics still believe the island never existed and was merely a fragment of Plato's imagination. It is an on-going mystery being analyzed to this day. So if this island really existed where was it? Where would it be now? Well there are different theories about its location just like there is over everything about the myth.

If you think Plato was telling the truth then Atlantis is located some where in the Atlantic ocean. One of the more likely places would be around the Azores islands. The Azores is a group of islands belonging to Portuguese coast. Some people believe the islands are the mountaintops of the sunken continent of Atlantis (page 1 of 3). Yet some people think Atlantis was an aggregation of the historical destruction of Thera and the Minoan Empire, then it was found in the Aegean. The island of Thera is a volcanic island said to explode around 1500 BC.

There are many different theory's about the lost world of Atlantis, anything from where it is located, and the different beliefs about what it was, if Plato simply made the entire story up, or possibly made an extreme aggregation of a different society all together. But the great tale lives on and the strange mystery is still unsolved, the conquest to find the Grand Island hidden under the sea continues, and some day someone will solve the puzzle of the great lost world of Atlantis.
