What makes a piece of literature so remarkable that scores of people for decades continue to read and talk about it? Well, the only way to really find out is to read one for yourself. Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, is an example of a novel which has lasted the ages. It is a classic.

Classics are so extraordinary because of the strong message and cultural significance they possess. They are considered the elite documents of literature, the most profound and meaningful words written. Classics are timeless. When the reader can relate to the uniquely written story and the philosophical message it possesses, regardless of the period in time in which the novel was written it could be considered a classic. Great Expectations, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Odyssey, as well as Jane Eyre are all considered classics. But why?

Every year, countless numbers of people flock to libraries, search bookcases, and bring home these books that have been regarded as everlasting and ageless. It does not matter how long ago these pieces of literature were written or what style of language they used, they each played a profound role in the time period in which they were written. But more importantly, they continue to effect people of future generations. People read classics expecting to discover a philosophical message that can be applied to our society, regardless of the time period of the books production. The authors of classics use words to send a message and meaning about a certain problem, obstacle, or predicament in society. What is so special about the subjects written in classics way back in the 1800 s such as Jane Eyre that makes them significant today?

The word classic signifies greatness that has enduring cultural relevance and value. It possesses something timeless, eternal and meaningful to society. How a subject of a book written over 150 years ago can still be related to todays life and society is just a feat in itself. The topics of classic books are so unique that even though hundreds of years or just years pass, and the words and writings can still be applied to present day.

Their messages are so powerful, even to this day, and are a symbol to real life situations that people must handle. You may ask, however, what kind of moral or significance Jane Eyre plays on society. Well, the answer to that would lie on the first page of the novel. It explains the biographical information of Jane Eyre's author, Charlotte Bronte, and how Jane Eyre came to be. In the text it explains that Bronte used a pseudonym in order to publish Jane Eyre. After her pseudonym had accredited success with Jane Eyre's publication, Bronte reveals that she is the real author of the novel, not a man as thought.

The shocking revelation of the identity of Jane Eyre's author confounded critics because of how a female represented the portrayal of an independent woman. Jane Eyre gave an identity to women, and showed that independent females can have a mind of their own. The character of Jane Eyre represents independent women as an ideal icon to what women wished for. Equality and independence are values that females had been kept from during this time period, which is shown by the reaction of people learning who Jane Eyre's author was. In the book, the character Jane is given these rights as an independent woman, and is allowed to make decisions and choices for herself.

You can first find notice of Janes independence in the beginning of the book as Jane is resisting against Bessie and Mrs. Reeds orders. Jane states her rebellion as a new thing for me and continues through the book. Independence can also be shown by Jane settling herself at Lowood, and challenges herself to expand upon her talents. Later her advertising at Lowood to become a governess shows how she wants to make her own money and live her own life. But Jane continues with independence as she is engaged to Mr.

Rochester. She does not accept his money and does not want his land. She even becomes angry as he tries to purchase her elegant and expensive gifts. Even after the two are to be married, Jane wants to continue to be Adele's governess! She will not give up her independence to anyone including Mr.

Rochester and St. John, and writes to her uncle in order to seek out her own fortune instead of theirs. But what makes people read a classic today like Jane Eyre is the issue of how women continue to fight and wish for the right as independent women. Even though times have changed since the publication of Jane Eyre, women still have the need and want to become themselves. They still are fighting to be independent. So after all of these years, Jane Eyre has continued to be a symbol for women aspiring for their own independence.

Year after year people continue to read this book and try to understand the meaning of the character of Jane. Through Jane, women are able to see a true independent woman, and I feel that Charlotte Bronte was attempting to get people of both sexes to see how women can make their own decisions and live for them self. This is why we read Jane Eyre, and this is why it is given the honor of a being classic piece of literature.
