... were him was Emerson. The themes of the poems were education, temperance, slavery, prostitution, immigration and democratic representation. He would use a type of experimental verse cast in lines without rhyme and long lines with no identifiable meter. In this and the other editions until the "Authors Edition" he didn't put his name on the title, but in the opposite the title page was a portrait of Whitman. This become the most famous frontispiece in literary history.

A few months later (1956), he printed his second edition of Leaves of Grass. Whitman tried hard to make this second edition look different from first one, so he eliminated the space of the first one, also without Emerson's permission, he printed in gold the opening words of the letter he sent: "I greet you at the beginning of a great career, which must yet have a long foreground somewhere, for such a start. I rubbed my eyes a little to see if this sunbeam were no illusion; but the solid sense of the book is a sober certainty. It has the best merits, namely, of fortifying and encouraging." Also he added twenty new poems to the original twelve, and put long titles to the poems. The introductory poem was called "Poem from Walt Whitman, an American" poem that eventually be called "Song of Myself." He put in the titles of the poems the word "Poem." Despite of his efforts the sales of the book were even poorer than the first edition. A new edition of Leaves appeared in 1860.

In this edition, he used a new photo. This photo will be not used in any other edition. In this edition, Some publishers of Boston who have a specialty in publishing abolitionist literature, wanted to become the editors of the new edition of Leaves of Grass, so Whitman traveled to Boston to print his new edition. With this edition, Whitman began a incessant rearrangement of his poems in clusters and groupings. In addition of poems Calamus and Children of Adam who were very criticized, also contents clusters called Chants Democratic and Native American, Messenger Leaves and Leaves of Grass. This edition also contained the first book printings of some poems, with other 120 new poems.

He also revised his other poems like "Song of Myself", here called "Walt Whitman" and through the book he numbered his poetic verses. United states will now pass a time of war, also he will pass a time for reconstructing himself, also of thinking how to reconstruct his book, because of serial problems that he had with the Boston publishers. Other edition of Leaves of Grass appeared in 1867. It is the most carelessly printed and the most chaotic of all the editions.

Whitman had problems with the typesetters, whose work was filled with errors. Whitman didn't know the order the edition should have, because he decided to include in the edition Drum- Taps and Sequel in the back of the book. Leaves of Grass equally as the nation is in a period of reconstruction. In 1870, appeared the fifth edition of the book. In this edition he arranged the 1876 edition, mixing the poems of Drum-Taps to the clusters of the book and also including poems like "Marches now the War is Over" and "Songs of Insurrection." This poems captured the historical moment of reconstruction the country had passed. In 1881, appeared the last edition of Leaves of Grass.

It had a lot of critics because he uses again the theme of sexuality, but also because he talks in a bad manner about the progress of women. He said in his writings that women are supposed to be in their homes taking care of their family. When Whitman was with his third edition of the book Leaves of Grass, the country was through problems between the states because the northern part of the country was against slavery and the southern part of the country was in favor of slavery. This problem was taking place in the economic part, because the southern part was agrarian and the way they could obtain more salary was with the slaves, because they obtain less money than the others. The north part was based mostly in industrialization. President Abraham Lincoln tried everything to stop the war, but he couldn't do anything and the war started in February of 1861.

This war was known as the American Civil War. The war lasted for four years, and the results were devastating. The union part won, but a lot of lives were lost and thousand of soldiers were wounded. This war is a big influence in Walt Whitman's writings. His brother George got wounded in Virginia, so he decided to go there and stay with him. There he spend the time nursing and establishing conversations about the war with the wounded soldiers.

During all the time of his hospital service, Whitman was writing poems, poems about the war experience, rather about the aftereffects: about the battlefield, the public places turned into hospitals and his experiences nursing the wounded soldiers. He combined this with other poems he wrote before the war and create a book called Drum-Taps, the title evoke both the beating of the drums that accompanied soldiers into battle as well as the beating out of "Taps", the death sounded at the burial of soldiers. The poetry in this book is modest, where death was no longer than something inextinguishable from life. He gave the book to publish five days after Lincoln's assassin: " I never see a man without feeling that he is the one to become personally attach'd to, for his combination of purest, heartiest tenderness, and native western form of manliness" Whitman was in his mother's house when he heard the news about Lincoln. The lilac blushes were blooming in his mother's dooryard, where he went to console himself and where he inhaled the scent of the lilacs, which became for him viscerally bound to the memory of Lincoln's death. He wrote from this the elegy to Lincoln's death "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd." Other elegies are "hush'd Be the Camps To-day" and the uncharacteristically rhymed and metered elegy "O Captain!

My Captain! . This poems will be written in the book Sequel as a sequel of Drum-Taps in 1865. In 1870, Whitman published Democratic Vistas and Passage to India. The second one is a volume of seventy- five poems.

This book was intended as a follow -up volume to Leaves of Grass, one that would inaugurate a new emphasis in his poetry. Much of this book celebrates the highly publicized work of engineering. Unfortunately, on January of 1873, Whitman suffered a stoke that let him partially paralyzed, with weakness in his left leg and arm. Despite of his physical decline, the poet published steadily. During this years he wrote books like Memoranda During the War (1875), Two Rivulets (1876) two more editions of Leaves of Grass (1876 and 1881), an autobiographical book called Life Stories Specimen Days (1881), November Boughs (1888) and the last book he wrote before his death Good- Bye My fancy (1891). Whitman continued writing, "garrulous" to the very end.

Whitman was very sick, beset in an array of ailment. Whitman died on March 26, 1892. The cause of his death was miliary Tuberculosis, with other contributing factors. The autopsy revealed that one lung had completely collapsed and the other was working only at one-eight capacity. As a result of all the works he had done in his life, Walt Whitman has enjoyed a great international renown. His most important and influential work Leaves of Grass has been translated in all mayor languages.

His legacy includes not only poetry but also fiction, film, architecture, music, painting, dance and many other arts. Whitman let us a new type of poetry: free verse who is the principal vehicle of contemporary poetry, being him with Emily Dickinson the ones who opened the doors to the modern poetry. He as many other writers of this epoch made a difference in the romanticism believes. Whitman in his simple words expressed to the world his feelings, as many others would like. Maybe in that epoch he was not recognized as he is now, but what we know is that he completed his mission, he obtained the peoples attention making them think and learn of being themselves, also and most significative to learn to love their country, the place that saw them born, and of been proud of who they are and where they came from.
