First things first, people argue his name. Some say that the J. at the beginning of his name means Julius because his fathers name is Julius. Others argue it is simply a J.

that stands for nothing. To tell the truth nobody really knows the truth about what it stands for. Well, since thats cleared up thats that. J. Robert Oppenheimer was born on a cold spring evening April 22, 1904 in New York. When Oppenheimer was five he went on a trip to Germany to visit his grandfather Ben who gave him a dozen minerals that were labeled in German.

This is where Oppenheimer first got into minerals. Oppenheimer went to college at Harvard. He finished college in three years instead of the usual four years. During his career he meets and befriends many Noble Prizewinners and worked with many others.

Oppenheimer was bad at laboratory work at first but eventually became better. He learned many languages during his time. He lived in Europe while learning more physics. Oppenheimer was known for being more shy than snobbish while in Europe. Up until the 1930 s Oppenheimer was not into politics. He didnt even own a radio or a telephone.

At one point in his life he was leaning towards the communist party but then showed distaste for the communist party. Oppenheimer and Katherine Putting Harrison were married in 1940 and had a son in 1941. During Oppenheimer two and a half years at Loa Alamos he was a dedicated worker who worked six days a week on 20 -hour days. For all the time he lived he was a dedicated family man. At the age of 62 he died on February 18, 1967 in Princeton, New Jersey. PROFESSIONAL LIFE For five years after Oppenheimer graduated he kept up his studies.

When he finished his studies he was appointed to the physics department at University of California at Berkley. At the same time he was appointed to the physics department at Caltech at Pasadena. Oppenheimer later was the target of the governments need. The need was for someone to supervise the atomic bomb research. He agreed to become the coordinator of atomic research at the Office of Scientific Research and Development. This was the government project that was to try to build atomic weapons.

He was the coordinator at Los Alamos. The complete name of what and where he was doing was called the Manhattan District Project at Los Alamos. He supervised and helped design the atomic bomb for three years until it was ready to be tested. He supervised the first atomic bomb test, which was at the Trinity site near Alamogordo, New Mexico. This was done three years after he became supervisor on July 16, 1945.

After the test it was ruled that the bomb was ready to be dropped on Hiroshima. Less than a month later the first atomic bomb that was used was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki three days later on August 9, 1945. Japan finally surrendered on August 14, 1945. Oppenheimer left Los Alamos in October of 1945 and went back to Caltech where he taught. Two years later he was appointed the director of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.

The same year he was appointed to be the chairperson of the General Advisory Committee of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. Between 1953 and 1954 the Atomic Energy Commission suspends his Oppenheimer's security clearance because of his past political ties with the communists.

He does not restore his clearance and is banned from government work in physics. In 1963 Oppenheimer receives the Enrico Fermi award for his contributions to the science of physics. How does it affect us? In Oppenheimer's time it was the race for the atomic bomb. If he did not help in the making of the atomic bomb our war with Japan might have ended differently.

Oppenheimer's actions have shaped the world. It was critical that the Americans gain the technology to get ahead of the Japanese. In the search for world peace there will be some un peaceful battles. Oppenheimer's great contributions to physics and science might be looked at today as very little it isnt.

Oppenheimer has become a scientist that will not be forgotten for he is as he described, I am become death, destroyer of worlds. Which isnt fully true but his studies may turn the world upside down and he may be credited as the Destroyer of Worlds.
