... evil and suffering in the very present of now. The future of Jesus is just as important, what we experience now, is just a taste of what we are going to experience in the future. We live in a sense of in between times, struggling for peace and justice now, and trusting that ultimately God's gifted future will somehow be brought to completion (71). A gifted future is what it is, a mirror gift, we cannot contain God's kingdom through human nature, God gives this to us through his ultimate love and care. We ultimately believe that God is going to bring forth a world, which will hear no, speak no, and see no evil.
How did Jesus relate to so many different people? I believe that it was through his use of parables. The word parable means placing one thing beside another for the purpose of comparison (75). They could be described as poetry that seeks to establish God's rule in our lives (75).
They are stories that make known the true meaning of God's plan and reveal how God is active in life situations. They are usually stories that put us in touch with the deeper and more sacred dimensions of our life. We can relate to these stories, because they seem real, and they make Jesus seem more real in his teachings. They helped Jesus reveal his message better by revealing his own compassion, love and self-sacrifice for the kingdom. The parables brought a sense of oneness with God, and his followers felt that through his stories. For example, in Matthew 21: 28 - 31, some chief priests and elders challenged the authority of Jesus.
Jesus responded with a parable about a father who asked one of his sons to help him work in the vineyard. The son at first refused, but then had a change of heart and helped his father. The father then asked his other son to help and without hesitation, the son said he would be glad to help. Yet, he never lifted a finger while he was in the vineyard. The moral of this parable was that the chief priests and elders who challenged the authority of Jesus needed to compare themselves with the two sons, and realize that they are just like the second: All talk but no action. Ironically, Jesus is the exact opposite when it has come to fulfilling the goods in my life.
He is all action, but little talk. Of course, we hear Jesus in his prayers and we can hear him telling us to not do something when it is wrong, but him actually speaking to us is a different story. We have never heard his voice, but we see all of his actions and the many good deeds he does for every individual. As far as implementing Jesus in my life, it has become much more apparent that he is here for me over the last year. My parents are both Catholic, and when I turned the ripe age for becoming baptized, that is just what they did. When I was old enough to start CCD at the church, off I went, to learn about God and Jesus until I was confirmed.
I had always went to confession, and noted that I had sinned, for I was human. I knew that God would forgive me. I used to pray for things that I wanted, like a state basketball championship and presents for Christmas, now realizing that those things are not what is important in life. My grandfather passed away last January, and while God took one away, he renewed faith in another.
At first, of course, I was angry with him and did not understand why he had to take him away from me. But, I realize now, that he was restoring my faith, and trying to teach me the true meaning in life. Like any human, I still wish that my grandfather was here, but instead of worrying about little things, I pray that I have the little things in life. Love, family, friends and most importantly, Jesus are the simple things that are needed in life. Unfortunately, I had to learn this the hard way.
I always knew this was true, but never did I know how important they were until January 29. Like any Christian, I have had doubts that he was there. Is there really a God that would take something so important away from me? Like Joseph, I learned of Gods power through a dream. Joseph learned that Mary was pregnant while he was sleeping, and as a man of compassion was going to quietly divorce her because she seemed to be carrying someone else's baby. But, God was revealed in the dream and told Joseph not to divorce Mary, for she was the Virgin Mother of God, and the baby should be named Jesus.
My experience was similar, in the fact that I too learned the miraculous power of God. I felt someone tap me on the shoulder, I rolled over and I saw my grandfather, just looking at me. He brought a sense of peace with him, there was a bright light in the background, and he intently watched me. I stayed still, not wanting to move, for I did not want the moment to end. There were not any words exchanged, and as he disappeared into the light, I knew that everything was going to be ok. The serenity that he brought to the room was a miracle in itself A few weeks ago, my grandfather visited me again, this time in a dream.
My grandmother, grandfather, brother and I were all present in Florida. Ironically, all of us knew that my grandfather had passed away in the dream, he was just visiting us for awhile, we knew that he eventually had to leave. All of us were trying to spend as much time with him as we could. His friends were stopping by; they wanted to take him fishing out on the water one of his favorite past-times. I remember before I woke up, I gave him a hug, and I said I love you.
He obviously told me that he loved me back, but he also wanted to let me know that he was not ready to leave and that he loved me no less just because he was gone. After experiencing these two encounters, I have no doubt that there is a God. Both encounters were not like anything I had ever experienced before. I know that my grandfather was present with me bot times. God is a miraculous individual who works in mysterious ways and has taught this to me through life experiences. I know that he will continue to teach and be miraculous, because those are two aspects of his life that we can relate to him.
By being a miraculous teacher, Jesus has revealed his true image and taught me how to implement him in my life.
