Before you begin reading, I hope you will ask yourself what the word excellence means to you. Because excellence is what best describes Eddie Murphy. Eddie is by far one of the best entertainers of all time. Starting from when I was very little I have grown to love him and everything he has done to become what he is today.

That is why I chose to read Eddie Murphy - Entertainer. This book is an excellent source for learning about Eddie's life and experiences. Deborah Wilburn, the author of this book seems to be very fond of Eddie Murphy, just like so many other people are including myself. She writes about black people and their achievements. This is a good thing because still to this day racism can sometimes hurt the talent of great people no matter what race they are. That is why I have great respect for this author and others like her.

There is great detail about Eddie's life from past to present that she provided in this book and it is very organized. It was Eddie's laugh that always cracked me up the most. No matter how bad his put-downs were or how funny his gestures would be, his laugh would always top them off. This laugh was his way of reminding audiences that he was going for their laugh and he got it. Starting in 1976 when Eddie was in tenth grade he hosted a talent show for his school.

It was at that time that he marked the beginning of his extremely talented career that would last for years, even decades to come. From the first moment after Eddie had finished hosting the show that night people thought he was simply hilarious. That is when he decided he would start his official career. He first started out at nightclubs doing standup every weekend.

He did this to make a little money so that he could help his mom pay the bills. That is something that amazes me. At the age of fifteen he was doing standup comedy at local nightclubs making around three hundred dollars a week! This is usually a normal monthly earning for a working teen! After a few years of performing standup at nightclubs, the "big gig" had suddenly showed its face in Eddie's career. A spot was available in the Saturday Night Live cast.

As soon as he heard about it he jumped right in for an audition. When the audition came, he blew away the producer. She thought Eddie was absolutely fabulous and he was instantly hired. Soon enough after a few weeks of training he started his appearances on Saturday Night Live totally cracking up most of the viewers across America. The reason I say most is because after Eddie had performed impersonations of famous people like Michael Jackson, Little Richard, Stevie Wonder, Bill Cosby, and others, some people were offended. That is something I find ridiculous!

He is not trying to be political in his humor or make fun of anyone. He is simply entertaining which is what he set out to do in the first place. As a matter of fact the first time I saw a few of Eddie's Saturday Night Live episodes this year I fell out of my chair laughing. It was not usually the famous people Eddie impersonated that were offended. It was the type of people that seem to have no sense of humor.

Even though there were a few occasional inappreciative viewers of Eddie's work, that didn't keep him from hitting the big time soon after he had joined Saturday Night Live. In the second season of the show with Eddie in it, he practically owned it, and that's when he decided it is time to move on (Wilburn, Deborah A. , 44). Eddie had now been offered to play the spot in the movie 48 Hours as Reggie Hammond, Nick Nolte's sidekick in crime. What is funny is unlike other actors; Eddie was a costar in his first movie. Not only being a costar in his first movie made him suddenly even more famous, 48 Hours happened to be an immediate hit, grossing five million dollars in the first week. The movie went on to make a hundred million dollars making it a smashing success.

This movie was definitely what shot Eddie into movie stardom. After 48 Hours had been made, everything in his career began to fall into place. Since 1981 Eddie has made over twenty box office hits and is still stirring up more to this day. Though he has made over twenty great movies I like to focus on the movies made from 1981 to 1995 as his greatest.

I am not trying to imply that he has lost his touch or that times have changed. I just think that he has not come out with another golden movie like he produced during those years. Among the years that held his best movies my favorite are Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop I and II, The Golden Child, Coming To America, and Boomerang. The characters in these movies including Eddie are in there to entertain and have fun. All of them are great actors and deserve recognition for their performance, which have most likely already received it. These movies are some of the funniest and most carefree around, and they happen to be some of Eddie's greatest. "If I could say that my life was easy I would, but it was not" (Murphy, Eddie, 88).

The thing is everyone goes through bad times in their life. We just have to do our best to become successful in our own way. After all it is not hard to become successful at what you like if you just put your mind to it. That is what Eddie has done. He took a natural born talent of entertaining and transformed it into his whole career and life. This is one of the few very successful people that can say no, I did not go to college.

The theme here is determination. Eddie was simply determined from an early age to become a famous entertainer and he made all of it come true in his own time with his own mind. The movies, the standup comedy, and the music are all things that Eddie has been extremely talented in and I look forward to more releases of them during my lifetime.
