Disorientation leads to knowledge. Man can learn from being in a situation that is unfamiliar to him. No matter what one learns from a teacher, a parent, or a book, the only way to ever learn something is to experience it. Whether it is a job, sport, or learning survival, in order to learn from events such as these, a person must experience them. The novel Deliverance is a great example on how disorientation leads to knowledge. All four characters leave their trip with different beliefs.

They all change their initial feelings of disorientation. Lewis belief is based on doing. He states, its not going to be what your title says you do, but what you end up doing. In this quote Lewis is talking about survival. He says that the only thing that matters in a survival scenario is what a person is capable of, not his position.

Lewis believes that survival depends on the human body and he wants to be physically prepared. I decided that survival was not in the rivets and the metal, and not in the double-sealed doors and not in the marbles of Chinese checkers. It was in me. Although he adopted this idea as his article of faith, he later fails to live up to its standards. Lewis prepares for this type of scenario a large portion of his life. He trains his body by weight lifting in order to be physically able to handle what comes his way.

He thinks his body is ready for this test, yet he fails by breaking his leg in the rapids. This injury sets back Lewis physically as well as mentally. His thoughts on survival are wrong, and his accident makes him reevaluate the factors that are involved in survival. His belief in the human body is disproved as he learns from his experience. Although Lewis believes in doing, Ed believes in sliding. I am a get-through-the-day man Im mainly interested in sliding.

Ed lives life by avoiding everyday confrontation and striving for comfort. Ed does not want to go on the excursion; He thinks Lewis reasoning pertaining to survival is ridiculous and at times humorous. Eds primary goal is to finish the expedition quickly. Ed does not believe in anything Lewis tells him, until the accident. Because of the accident, Ed adopts Lewis attitude towards survival.

Wellhere we are, at the heart of the Lewis Medlock country This is what it comes toI told you. In this quote, Ed starts to believe in Lewis ideals about survival. By climbing the mountain and killing the hillbilly, Ed learns that survival relies on the capabilities of the human body. Drew, the morally responsible person in the group, believes in doing things lawfully.

When Lewis shoots the hillbilly, Drew immediately says to go to the authorities. But I cant go along with this. Its not a matter of guts; its a matter of the law. However, Lewis answers, You see any law around here?

Were the law. What we decide is going to be the way things are. The rest of the group agrees with Lewis rather then Drew. This decision excludes Drew from the group.

He no longer has any importance to the group and his point of view is dismissed. This reason constructs Drews death in the novel. Before he dies, Drew realizes to survive, man must do whatever he can to protect himself from things that our harmful. It is a survival issue for Bobby before he even gets on the river.

He wanted to go home before he even started down the river. His main objective is to survive the journey home. Bobby's achieves this by complaining excessively. He says, George aint doing it fast enough. I want to get the hell and gone out of this goddamned place Mosquitoes ate me up last night.

My bites have got bites. Im catching a censored ing cold from sleeping on the censored ing ground. Im hungry as hell for something that tastes good. Bobby is also harmful to the group. He is weak both mentally and physically.

He needs people to advise him what to do. Instead of enjoying himself, Bobby concentrates on arbitrary subjects such as their cars. He states, What we going to do if we come off this river, and there no cars. Yet, when things become more serious, he stops nagging and learns to survive by keeping his mouth shut and listening to the others.

All four characters were put in a situation that was unfamiliar to them. Their disorientation led to knowledge about survival. Lewis belief was disproved for Lewis but it inspired Ed. Everything about the body Lewis had told Ed was now put into effect. Ed realized that survival did depend on what the body can do. Both Lewis and Ed swapped beliefs with one another in the novel.
