This book was written by Wilson Rawls. Mr. Rawls based this story on his life as a boy. Wilson was born on a small farm in the Ozark Mountains, and also owned a blue tick hound. Wilson would love to roam northeaster Oklahoma with his dog. Wilson loved to tell stories to and about his dog.

This story was about a little boy named Billy who longed for not one but two hound dogs ever since he had red an article about them in a sports magazine. Billy would beg his mom and dad for them every day for weeks, and even months. Every time he would ask he would get an excuse, either they didnt have enough money, or he just wasnt old enough. Billy could get the dogs off his mind he would think about them all the time. One day after talking to his dad, his dad left for the store and came back with a surprise for Billy. Billy expected it to be a bag of candy, instead his dad pulled out three small steal traps.

Billy was really excited and that very next morning set them up. Billy would catch little things like squirrels, skunks and rabbits. The only thing Billy was missing was a big coonskin. The one-day that he found the article saying "registered red bone coonhound pups twenty-five dollars each" Billy was determined. He decided he would work day and night to pick berries, sell his skins to his grandfathers store, and selling crawfish and minnows to the fishers for bait. By the time Billy was 12 he was over his half way mark.

He worked another year till that great day came that he had fifty dollars. He could feel the hound pups in his hands. He left early one morning, with the tin of money safely in his overalls, to head for his grandfathers store. Billy left early one morning to go get the dogs he had wanted for so long. Billy had never been in town he had heard stories, and knew how to get there but never seen any of its wonders.

Billy went through the hills twenty miles. His feet became very sore from walking over the flint rocks and saw briers and he would stop and rest a few times, but wouldn't stop longer then he needed to. Billy was scared of the people in town. He saw all the stores, even some with two stories. He also saw the wagon yard with all the wagons, teams, buggies, and horses. All the people would stop and laugh at him.

He saw a sheriff and became very afraid. He had never seen a sheriff before and heard stories about how many men they had killed. He went into a store and decided to buy overalls and several yards of cloth. He also bought a large sack of candy.

Billy walked by a lot of shouting and laughing kids. He watched as the girls and boys were playing on teeter totters and swings. There was a big blue pipe that ran up at an angle from the ground. The pipe bent in the middle and seemed to go into the building. Boys crawled into the piped and sorted out of it. After the boys went in, Billy decided he would try.

He fell right on his butt and a boy laughed at him. The boy asked him a lot of questions about if he went to school, were he lived, about his clothes, so on. He ran away when the mob of kids started yelling saying "hillbilly, hillbilly." He arrived at the depot and was afraid to go in. He finally went in and got his dogs. Billy started heading home again. On his way home all the town kids started yelling at him and making fun of him.

One of the kids started fighting with Billy, but the sheriff broke it up before it got to bad. The sheriff took him to the general store and got him a bottle of pop. Billy started to head back home with his dogs. After a few miles away from town Billy let his pups walk and then put them in the sack again. It started to get dark so Billy decided to start a fire and set up camp in a cave. He found out the girl pup had brains and the boy pup had power.

After falling asleep he heard a scream of a lion. Although scared to death, they lived through the night. The next day they took off for home again. When Billy and the pups got home every one was glad to see them. Billy's sister asked Billy questions about the soda pop and Billy told the whole family about his adventure and discoveries of going into town.

Billy started to train day and night for his hounds. Then that one-day came when hunting season began. Billy went out that night and let his hounds go. One of his hounds found a trail that night, but the coon pulled a trick and got away. Later that night the girl pup found another trail, but after chasing the coon for hours and hours the coon ran up a huge tree. Billy was going to cut that tree down even if it took him a year to do it.

He cut half way through and made a scarecrow to make sure the coon would stay up in the tree. He went home and ate then came back and started chopping the tree down again. The wind blew down the tree before Billy could chop it down, and the dogs went off and caught the coon. He came home and skinned the coon with his dad and asked him if he thought it was possible God helped him blow over that tree, because he asked him for help. After his first catch Billy was coon-crazy. He would go hunting just about every-night.

He got involved in this contest and whichever dog caught the most coons won! The two hounds won both together and apart. One night Billy went hunting with his dogs. Old Dan sat at a huge tree and did something he never did before. A mountain lion attacked him. Little Ann was quick to jump in, but Billy wasnt going to let them die, so he hit him in the back with an ax.

Little Ann only had one big wound, but Old Dan was sliced open and his insides were falling out. They got home and doctored the dogs. After just a little wait Old Dan passed away in Billy's lap. Billy was devastated that his dog passed away and went and cried at the riverbanks till morning time. That morning he would not eat, the only thing he wanted to do was burry his dog. That day Little Ann had ran away.

He found her on Old Dans grave. He saw that she was dead. She used her last bit of energy to make it up to Old Dans grave. When Billy got back home his dad showed him that he had saved up all his money he had made from the furs he sold. His dad told him they were going to move to town. They said the reason the dogs passing away was a good thing was because they were going to leave Billy with his grandpa, while they moved into town, until the dogs had passed away.

The next day he berried Little Ann next to Old Dan and berried a little bit of his life in there with them too. He asked his mom if good dogs went to heaven and if they could hunt up there. She said she thought so because in the Bible it says there is much more there than there is here on earth. That spring they were ready to move out when Billy went to go visit his dogs. When he went he saw a red fern had grew right between the two graves. It made him think of the legend of the Indian kids that froze to death and a red fern was planted there between there bodies by an angle.

The mom, sisters, and dad were very happy. They thought it would help Billy understand why his dogs died. As they left town they looked back to see the red fern flowing gracefully in the spring breeze. In this book, I feel, the main theme is love and tragedy. Billy worked his whole childhood for two dogs. When Billy got his dogs he loved them and would never leave their side.

He would hunt with them and play with them every day. Billy also showed love for his family. If Billy's mom would start to cry Billy would make sure to comfort her or make her not see his pain. Billy's dad also showed love.

He showed love by teaching Billy how to teach his dogs, and by comforting him in the only way Billy wanted to be comforted. The tragedy in the story is showed as well through his mom, dad, and dogs. His mom would feel horrible every time Billy would ask for hound dogs, so would his dad. The town people showed the hatred in this story.

The town people treated Billy horribly when Billy came to town. They laughed at him, called him names, and even beat him up. I really enjoyed this book because it kept me "on the edge of my seat" and really showed me how much God cares for people, and even if I feel my prayers aren't being answer, if I wait, there will always be an answer for everything.
