... n social groups to the groups that comprise the animal world. Humans are in groups all over the world and act certain ways correspondingly to them. The group you are in often has such a large impact on you it creates how you act. Later in the chapter Morgan explains male bonding, how it is a bond that women can never fully understand or experience it. (208) She uses the male bonding as a reason why many women do not enter political life. She says political offices are often held by men and these men are able to bond together unlike any way a women can bond with a man, this makes it hard for her to enter this work stature and be able still remain at the same pace as the rest of the workers.

She becomes left out because she is a woman. (210) Women do not enjoy being dominated completely by man; she likes to have some independence. Morgan says in chapter 10 though that once a man feels he is dominating a family he makes that his territory and will rarely back down. He feels the woman of the house is his and he needs not share her with anyone else. (217 - 8) In this chapter Morgan explains the phrase the descent of woman. She states it is because woman had descended so far that in many, perhaps most, human communities she was regarded as congenitally inferior-physically, mentally and morally. (219). Women have always strived to be seen as equals, even in the beginning, they worked just as hard as the males but this often went unnoticed. Women are still working hard today to be noticed and achieve their true equality in the world.

Elaine Morgan begins the final chapter of her book stating that women are feeling less fulfilled by their motherly duties. She also states that women are finding sex more pleasurable than her ancestors. Morgan states that fewer things are taboo now, people openly discuss more and this quite possibly has lowered the respect men and women have for each other. The system of keeping everything hush-hush only worked because people were used to it, it wasnt actually more effective then what is going on now; it was just routine so it ran smoothly. Men have survived these change, Morgan says is because, guys still have their penises. (237) Women are okay with this beginning of a sexual era because the feel sex is nice (238). They are enjoying the attention, the looks, the talk, and the stares. (I feel those statements by Morgan are a little out dated now. ) Women have turned many of those things into sexual harassment and dont enjoy it as much anymore.

Morgan tells about how the primal instincts to take care of her young still exist in the mind of a woman. She still will put the child needs before her mates, who often puts his own before hers or the childs. That is if she wants the child. When women do not want a child in the first place they are less likely to take care of it properly. She states that once everyone has the right not to be born to a mother who doesnt want him.

And once everyone has that right it will be in the power of every woman to decide whether or not she wishes to have a child (254). With the invention of such contraceptives as the pill woman is able to more adequately control her body and the chance or pregnancy. Morgan ends by saying maybe one-day man will shed his dominance just like he shed his fur; but that too will take many millions of years for him to adjust to. (262) Morgan reveals what she feels is the theme of her book in chapter seven. I interpret her theme as being her trying to show the similarities yet difference we share with so many different species in the world.

We are interconnected. We are not main bloodlines to these other species but we have things in common with them. One species went into the water because it had to, to survive and later came out an improved species to live on land again. The Homo sapiens are the final product of this long evolutionary journey in Elaine Morgans mind. She felt women were the one to progress first in this evolution; they were the ones to most often take the first step. Its a theory I thought was crazy in the beginning but after reading this book it seems sensible.

She was able to explain so many adaptations and give each, good reasons to support how and why they happened. At times the book dragged and lost my interest but in the end I felt I learned new things. Ive never read Darwin's The Descent of Man so I am unable to compare it to his book. I have heard it is very hard to follow and is very complex. I did have trouble reading this book and this is supposed to be easy compared to his; so I feel I will steer away from reading his book. Elaine Morgans books are not very well known to every day people, many scientist know of her books though.

I looked into some of her other books and feel none of them would be able to keep my attention. I started out interested in this book but as I read the book it became less interesting and more repetitive. I began to highlight less because I found less information important, you may also notice this in my paper. I will be honest and say that with each chapter my summaries became smaller but it was because I felt in many chapter she would state one fact and just repeat it over and over with different examples. In the beginning of her book so much of the information was new to me and seemed so realistic. But later in the book I lost the spark of interest.

I am not heavily into evolution; science was never my strong point. I like to learn things and ask questions but I like solid answers and many aspects of science dont provide this. I like to have concrete evidence with a foolproof conclusion but for evolution there isnt a conclusion. There are still theories to be tested and to be proved, the questions of where, when and how human evolved? may never be answered but Elaine Morgans book is a good attempt at it.
