Each child that grows up in America by law is supposed to attend schooling from first grade through the age of sixteen. The purpose is so that being that all people in the country will be literate, and able to be a productive member of society. Does this mean that all students must reach the same level of education, the same level of literacy? Unfortunately, not all students that attend school until they are sixteen will have the same education. Many schools do not have the resources needed to prepare students properly. Is it the fault of the students, the school or the community?

So what should schools do? Many people who study education have different views on how to deal with that question. Mike Rose, and E. D. Hirsch are two people who have very different views on education. I believe that schools need to tailor their education systems to fit the students that they are teaching.

Kids today are coming from very different backgrounds, and that should be taken into consideration when preparing a curriculum for school. Students who are coming from rough areas are going to have a difficult time focusing on school. Some kids will be wondering when they are going to be able to find food for their next meal, while others may be afraid to go home. There is no way that these students are going to be able to pay attention in classes, and get all their homework done. I dont think that students should ever be looked down upon, or be viewed as un-teachable, but rather there should be a different way that they are able to learn the same basic concepts that are taught in high schools.

As soon as a child feels that they are unable to do something that student is going to shut down, and give into these ideas. Students need to be encouraged; they need to know that teachers care about their success, and them. Kids who have positive motivators around them are going to do better than kids who are continuously put down. Mike Rose believes more along the lines of what I do. Rose feels that education should be focused on the different areas.

Rose was a student in a rough area. Then, he went off to school, he was accidentally placed in the wrong class. He was put with the students that were viewed as dumber than the rest of the students. It took a couple years for a teacher to discover that he was placed in the wrong class. He eventually went on to attend Loyola College. He was an excellent student, very intelligent.

After he graduated Loyola College, he was granted a scholarship to UCLA. Once at UCLA for graduate study, Rose realized that this was not what he wanted for his life. He chooses to drop out of graduate school and become a teacher. From Roses own experiences he is able to see all the wrongs in education. Rose begins to attack the America education system. In this country we pride ourselves on the fact that anyone can make it if they work hard enough.

In this country it is believed that there is opportunity for everyone to succeed. Rose sees the lies and the fallacies in this idea. Rose ends up becoming a teacher for students very much like the ones that he went to school with when he was a child. These kids are looked down upon. Rose finds this idea to be false. He thinks that when students are categorized and once they are placed in these different academic categories the students dont move out of them.

The student will lose all self-confidence, and shit off in class. In many of these classes the goal of the teacher is not to teach them, but rather to prevent any outbursts. Rose often felt helpless. He wants to change the way these kids are taught, but realizes that he will need to change the whole American education system. He comes to find that the education system in this country is not what it seems. He wants the best for the students, but is unable to change things on his own.

He understands that students need to have curriculums that tailor to the area, and ways of life of these students. E. D. Hirsch believes almost the exact opposite to Rose. I find myself disagreeing with much of Hirsch ideas.

Hirsch believes that there is a standard that all people must reach to be considered literate. He believes that all people must have a certain level of knowledge in many different areas to be considered literate. All students should be compared to this perfect example. Hirsch would agree very much with standardized testing, especially test like the MCAS. The MCAS is a test that all students in Massachusetts who want to graduate from high school have to pass. The questions on the test are all different areas of education, but are believed to be the basis for what kids should know when they graduate.

For me standardized testing has some value but should not be weighted heavily. Some kids are able to do very well on the test, while others may just not posses the skills to take the test. Take me for example, during my junior and senior year of high school I got close to all As, but when it came down to my SAT scores I did horrible. I only got a 1040, which is a score that shows nothing about how well I can really do as a student. I understand that the tests are to make sure that you are able to apply all your knowledge and are only to test what you know, but when are you ever in a situation where if you are unsure of how to solve a math problem, or are unsure of a vocabulary word you are unable to use a book to help you out. I highly doubt that in any career I will be reading a paper, find a word I am not sure what it means, and my boss will not let me look it up.

Hirsch also believes that being literate is not just knowing what something means, but is beyond the basic reading and writing skills. With this information people should be able to have a general knowledge about all different areas of education. This type of knowledge, which he calls Cultural Literacy, Hirsch believes to be what is needed to be a productive member in society. What is cultural literacy in a culture that is continuously changing, in a culture made up of thousands of different backgrounds of people? Hirsch believes it is the responsibility of the schools that make sure that the students is reaching the education level that they need to be. I think that Hirsch's ideas on American education are very unrealistic.

The important concepts and information that he believes to be of value now can change in a minute. The world is always changing, thus the definition of literacy will be continuously changing. Also, students coming from different areas are going to have to have different classes. Roses education ideas are a little unrealistic as well.

There is no way that each student has the full attention of the education system. It is no possible for everyone to be aware of each students home life, and what is going on in that area of the community. There needs to be a balance between these two views. When the balance is reached that will be the ideal education system.
