In this essay, I am going to discuss about whether Hitler was to blame for the outbreak of war in the 1939 or not. Hitlers foreign policy did had something to do with the outbreak the war, but the USA, Britain, France, the USSR, Japan and Italy also had to do with it. The main reason why there was a war was that Hitler and other countries started invading other countries and disobeying the Treaty of Versailles. The fact that the USA was not a member of the League, made the League weak. The USA was the only country that would make the economic sanctions effective and it had the biggest army.
If it was a member of the League then the war could of have been avoided because Hitler would not have had the courage to invade so many countries. Britain and France did wrongly self-interesting and letting Hitler go away with what he wanted while they were just focusing on their own countries. They did nothing when Hitler took over the Rhineland, the Sudetenland, and the Polish Corridor nor when he made Anschluss with Austria. All these things made Hitler each time more confident, and even more confident when they signed a policy of Appeasement.
It was not good to give Hitler confidence because it would mean he would probably invade more countries and expect no action taken by the League. He was very fond of following his aims published in his book Mein Kampf, one of them was to expand German territory. If Britain and France had not let Hitler go away with it then war might of not have happened. When Italy, Japan and Germany noticed their common dictatorship, they signed a pact called the Anti-Comintern Pact mainly to defeat communism, especially the one in the USSR. This alliance, called the Axis Alliance, made Hitler more confident because he was sure that if Germany entered in war the other two countries, Japan and Italy, would fight for him.
This encouraged Hitler invade more countries and be nearer to the outbreak of war. Poland was a main objective of Hitler, though he claimed he only wanted the Polish Corridor. Britain and France advised Hitler that if he invaded Poland they would declare war on him, but Hitler didnt believed this, if he had got away with what he wanted so many times, why couldnt he get away with this one too? The only thing that worried him was the USSR; he knew the USSR was a great country with a great army and wanted Poland too.
He finally got a way out of this problem; he signed the Nazi-Soviet Pact with Stalin. They decided to divide Poland between them. This finally lead to war, Britain and France declared war on Germany. If Hitler had not invaded Poland, then the outbreak of war could of have been avoided. Lastly, the depression that affected first the USA, affected the entire world.
Without it the war might of have been prevented. The people in Germany were starving and thought that the only way to resolve the problem was by supporting Hitler. If depression would not have hit Germany, the Germans would not of have found necessary to support Hitler and so get into war. All these facts I have mentioned lead to war. Each of them involves different countries, but all of them involve Germany and Hitler. Hitler gained confidence due to Britain and France not being enough harsh with him, and his ambition of invading more territory was decisive in the actions he took.
The same thing happened with Japan and Italy, their ambition made them want to invade countries. However, they would probably not have had invaded countries if the League had punished them from the beginning following the Article 10 from the Covenant of the Treaty of Versailles, which said: The members of the League undertake to preserve against external aggression the territory and existing independence of all members of the League. In case of threat of danger the Council [of the League] shall advice upon he means by which this obligation shall be fulfilled In my opinion, Hitler foreign policy did lead to war, but the Leagues leaders vague and worthless actions also did lead to war. If they had done something to stop the dictators from the beginning then the war could of have been avoided. For example, at the start of the 1930 Germany was very weak after losing world war I, and Britain and France could have had stopped it from rearming or invading land easily.
