So we asked an Italian were to find a settlement house and he guided us to this pretty nice looking white building labeled settlement of peace. So we walked in and we met this girl in a chair at a desk and she told us to sit down. Since we didnt know much English she had to get her assistant to translate what we were saying and vise versa.

So she told us about the city and the jobs and what to do and she gave us gave us a sheet explaining things about how to survive and stuff like that. So she sent me on my way. Honestly I was pretty scared because since the city was a melting pot and their are not a lot of my ethnic group were I was. The ethnic groups included Germans, Scandinavians, Irish, and a few Japanese, and my ethnic group, but there were mostly Germans.

So I did not know what to do from here. My wife was now scared that we would not make it live a economically sound life style or wouldnt be able to find a job because of our descent so of course she was really nervous and so was I. Then I suddenly remember that I talked to this guy about political bosses and such. I told her that I got to talk to the captain for a bit and he told me that in the places that you were to go there are political bosses which are connected to the political machines. My wife asked me what political machines and political bosses are and how they would they help us survive. I went on to explain that Political bosses ran under political machines and political bosses were people that controlled 1, 000 s of jobs and sometimes they worked through graft, which they did illegal thing like manipulate agencies to benefit themselves.

Other then that I told her that they help us to find homes and jobs and ask us favors in return by asking us to vote for them, and favors like that and that they were under the political machines. So she said thats good and she was calm once more or as calm as she could get. July 18, 1885 Today in desperation for my wife and son I started to talk to people to see if any of them could speak my language efficiently and after talking to 4 people I finally came upon one... His name was peter who was an American but could speak my language really well.

So we started to talk and I got the notion that he was a political boss from all the land property, businesses and his political position that he was talking about. Since he did the favor for us and was extremely nice to us he asked us when we were to vote he asked us to vote for him and not Boss tweed and vote against him because of graft that he committed by doing corrupt business deals and stealing millions of dollars, so I agreed to vote for him and against boss Tweed. Peter went on to tell me that he was an owner of one of the tenements and that he could get me in one for 2. 50 dollars a week. So he guided my family and I to his tenement which was really crummy. The building had paint that was coming off and it had a couple of broken windows that had to be fixed. So he escorted us in and showed us where we would be staying if we decided to move in.

The inside didnt have any paint on the walls so it was just wood, they had holes in the wall which was covered up with ply wood. Also the place had one light in the center of the one the one room living space. And it had only one bed and had no bathroom so you had to go in the lobby in the tenement complex. So I talked it over with my wife and she said that since we dont have any place to live right now we should take this really cheap offer so I agreed.

Then we did some more talking and he went on to say that he had a business that I and your wife could go into and work for me. He told us that it was a coal factory for 40 cents an hour so of course I couldnt refuse that offer because he told me that jobs were scarce and I knew it anyways. The coal industry I dont know much about but Im thinking its going to be tough on myself and especially on my wife. So peter told us that hell stop by tomorrow and guide us to his factory.

July 19, 1885 So its about 6: 30 a. m in the afternoon and Peter is coming at 7: 30 a. m so I have to decide what to do for my son. So I decided that I was going to leave him at the house so he could rest for a bit after all that hes been through, but tomorrow I would have to find him something to do.

So around 7: 35 a. m peter came and we he told us where to go and he went on to tell us that it was going to be a 2. 5 mile walk and to talk to Paul when we got their. So we went on our way. So my wife and I went on to talk about what to do with our son, but before she talked about that, she told me that one of the people on the boat was telling her that Jane Adams believes in women rights and helped them to get jobs. She also built a Hull House for immigrants that moved into the US to help them start out their new lives. What a wonderful thing to do especially when she is not even an immigrant.

So then we finally got on topic about what we should do about our sons predicament, and we decided that we should send him to a settlement house so he can learn the ways of the United States. So finally after 55 minutes we reached our destination. What an amazing site. My wife and I were aw stricken. There were mounds of coal hundreds of feet in the air. Hundred of people and machines working together to get coal their bodies drenched in ashes.

Then we saw small and large caves that people were coming out of. So we asked one of the workers were to find Paul and the guy pointed to this little house and so we went. When we got in there was this fat guy sitting in a chair smoking a cigar. And he told us too sit down and we did. Paul asked us what we wanted and since we couldnt really speak English he had a translator translate for us. He probably had one because of the immigrants that were coming in from the different countries.

So we told him that we where sent by this guy to get a job over here and the fat man asked who. I told him that Peter sent us here so we could get a job here. When I told him his name he started going off about how swell of a guy that Peter was so about 7 minutes later he finally got to the point and told us that we got the job as a coal miner and that our job was to go in the caves and pick away at the coal. We accepted of course, and the translator guided us to the entrance of the cave where he gave us both picks and he sent us on our way with Fabio which was to take us in the cave to our position. So we started to talk to him and he told us how dangerous this job was and how physical it was and we asked why. So he told us that the dust that you breathed in sometimes stung your lungs and sometimes certain parts of the caves would collapse on people which would therefore kill them or greatly injure them.

And he then told us that it was physical because of the non stop hacking of the coal for 8 to 9 hours with a short break. My wife and I asked each other, should we do this and we decided yes because we need the money. My wife and I looked around as we began our decent. Every thing was dark and gloomy and black and grey.

The only thing that illuminated our path was the torches that lined the cave, and the smell was awful. After 10 minutes of walking and ducking we finally reached our destination. It was a room, if you can call it that, that was filled with men hacking away at the coal. So Fabio told us to get started and we did.

There were so many ethnic groups working at our positions, and you could barley talk to each other because of the noise. It was really hard labor and painful too. Since we were newbies they only had us work for 4 hours and man those were the 4 toughest hours of my life. The reasons being, my inhaling of the particles from the coal made it hard for me to breath and hurt my lungs. Also the wood from the handle of the pick left blisters on my hands, which later bled. And the last most painful thing was seeing my wife in pain while she was working.

Finally what seemed like 12 hours the work day was over which was such a relief to both of us and as we were walking out if the coal mine my wife and I talked about how excruciating the job was and wished that we never had too do it again, but knew that would never happen. So we walked over to the office and asked Paul if he could give us our pay, which he did. So we walked home and rested while my son played with the other kids in the neighborhood. October 15 1885 We kept up the job for several months and got a few raises and our son went to school in the settlement houses while they Americanized them so we didnt see him much. And as time passed I learned that the political environment of the U. S was different from the one of European.

This was so by the US is a democracy and Italy is ruled by a king and the government in my old country did not give you the political, economic, religious, and freedom that the U. S offered. And although my wife and I dont have a good job this government gives you a lot of freedom that is precious to my wife and I. Also it allows us to move up in rank and social status that the other government did not allow. The US is also believes in free enterprise governments. And one of my favorite things is that this government allows us to vote on the people that we like, so we can have some control on the government.

There is hope for the family though my main hope in the future of my family and I is to have my son get a good job so he can contribute to the family and can support himself and then my wife and I will build a house in north Carolina raise up some animals and plants for live stock and live in our home for the rest of our lives.
