I took my mind awaking I dream of a beach; its my beach. My beach is deserted, no one knows about it; its a secret. My beach is completely calm and silent apart from the gentle whispering wind. My beach is a place where I can relax on my sun lounger without being disturbed or distracted.
On my beach, the sun is always shining, always smiling. The sun makes the sea glisten and twinkle as if stars are caught in it, makes the white sands sparkle like diamonds, makes life seem happy. Behind where I lie is a row of palm trees; tall and slender, leaves rustling slightly in the gentle breeze. The palm trees are my soldiers, my guardians, keeping me safe on my beach, secure from prying eyes; protected. As I look up, through the palms, I can see the sky. It is cloudless, a pure blue, crystal clear.
The blue of the sky is reflected in the ocean making the ocean a beautiful aqua colour. The ocean is clear and perfectly still, I can see the coral reef beneath the glass surface of water. I slowly rise from my sun lounger and reach out for my snorkelling mask and flippers. As I glide towards the sea the smell of salt water assails my nostrils and reminds me of when I was younger, building sandcastles. When I reach the waters edge I find my mask and flippers already on, convenient. Tentatively I walk into the sea, I can feel the water gently tapping at my ankles, it is pleasantly cool.
As my confidence grows I wade deeper into the clear, blue liquid, until it is past my navel. Then I go under. A little blue fish swims past me making the water ripple; I watch it for a while as it heads toward the reef. I feel a great sense of joy as I see it meet up with a shoal of at least a hundred more little blue fish. I swim towards the reef and soon way out of my depth but I am not scared, this is my beach nothing bad can happen. I watch as clown fish, rainbow fish, lionfish, archerfish and tiny minnows swim in and out of the coral, all of them vibrant oranges, yellows, purples, reds, and pinks.
Splashes of colour against the blue background of the ocean but camouflaged perfectly against the coral. The coral itself is the most beautiful shades of greens, blues, pinks oranges and yellows. It makes the water around it appear to glow with colour. My eyes feed on the colours of the reef and take in the tiniest details like the intricate pattern and formations of the coral.
I notice a pair of seahorses playing in the coral and manage to catch a glimpse of a mandarin fish hunting. To my left I can see a school of angelfish and to the right a lonesome clown triggerfish. As time drifts on I head back to shore. As I swim I gaze at big, orange crabs scuttling about underneath me, blending in with the sand and striking starfish moving slowly across the ocean floor. The warmth of the sun greets me; I can feel it on my face and shoulders as I emerge from the coolness of the water into the heat of the sun.
Removing my mask and flippers I become land locked again. As I wander across the hot sand to my sun lounger the sand sticks to my wet feet. I can see my towel hanging over the back of my sun lounger; I lift it off to dry myself. The softness of the towel on my skin is wonderful; it feels like velvet.
I lie back down on the sun lounger to continue my sunbathing. With my left hand I take hold of a tall, thin glass and as I drink my coconut milk through a straw I admire the little pink umbrellas in the top of my glass. The coconut milk is refreshing in the heat of the day and I welcome the taste. As I place the glass down on the small table next to me, I reach out with my right hand for a plate of fruit. I relax, slowly eating grape after grape the juice quenching my thirst and as I unwind in the sun eating pieces of pineapple and mango I slowly grow full and place the empty plate back down on my right. Soon my full stomach, the tiredness I feel from my swim and the heat of the sun overwhelm me and I drift into sleep.
As I sleep I dream and in my dream I wake up, only its not a dream. Suddenly, harshly Im back in reality. I raise the heavy head off the pillow and groan as realisation dawns, its just another dull day at school. Heaved out of bed the cruel, coldness of the morning hits; and my dream is lost until another night.
