... o upset we he found George gone one night. But George explained to him that he had be out tom catting. After that Master Lea gave George a traveling pass so he could go out at night without getting into trouble.

But he told George that if he found out George was doing other things then what he was suppose to be doing he would rip up the pass and teach him a lesson. George finally decided to settle down so he met a girl on a neighboring plantation named Matilda. Matilda was a good Christian woman and made all the others on the plantation pray more. Kizzy liked Irene from the moment she met her.

The first thing that Irene asked is were are the fields. Irene talked of the bible and really enjoyed preaching about the lord. Months later Matilda gave birth to their first son Virgil. The first thing Chicken George did was start telling his son about his great granddaddy Kunta Kinte. Matilda felt that she really didnt have a husband because he was always gone. He was out tom catting or drinking.

Irene being really religious didnt approve but stood by her husband. In the end Chicken George had eight children Virgil, Ashford, George, Tom, James, Lewis, Lil Kizzy and Mary. Chicken George tried really hard to find one of his sons that loved chickens as much as he did. But all the boys except Tom would rather work in the field.

But even Tom didnt like the chickens he wanted to be a blacksmith. So Master Lea got him a four year apprenticeship at a neighboring plantation. Then it all changed at a cock fight. Master Lea made a bet with a English man for twenty thousand dollars. Master Lea lost the fight but he didnt have the money to pay such a high priced bet. So the English man made a deal with him he was so impressed with Chicken George that if he sent George with him for a year in England to train one of the English mans men to cock fight.

Master Lea agreed. Chicken George was so upset he couldnt even talk. Master Lea agreed when George came back that he would be a free man and he could by his family's freedom. The family couldnt even believe it. But that wasnt even the worst of it Master Lea lost so much money that he couldnt even afford to keep his slaves.

He sold Matilda and all the children. He couldnt sell the others because they were to old to sell. Uncle Pompey was so upset that he died. They were all in tears and promised that they would work hard and buy the others freedom.

Master Lea and his wife said that they were going to stay together and that was the only way that they would sale them. When the family arrived at the new plantation they didnt know what to think. But they soon found out that they were owed by really nice people that had never owed slaves before. The name of the family was the Murray's. Master Murray said that he wouldnt hire a overseer if the family did their job.

They agreed to the conditions. The Murray's made Tom a shop that he could work out of. All the neighboring farmers would come to the Murray's plantation and have their horses should, tools fixed and anything else that they needed fixed. That is where Tom would pick up all the gossip about the on going Civil War. Virgil got married to a girl called Lil Sue and they had a boy that they called Uriah. Tom got hired by a neighboring plantation to make decorated window grills for their home.

While working on the plantation Tom met a girl named Irene. Tom decided that he wanted to jump the broom with Irene. But Tom was afraid that the Holt's wouldnt sell Irene to the Murray's. Irene reassured him that she could be sold when she wanted to be sold. Tom and Irene got married. Lil Kizzy was the next in line.

Matilda was tired of Lil Kizzy playing games with Amos and decided to take matters into her own hands. With the help of Irene Matilda and Irene began the bait. Irene was talking to Lil Kizzy about Amos. She said that she heard that he was seeing another girl on a different plantation and the girl was talking about jumping the broom with Amos. This made Kizzy jealous and angry.

So the next time that Amos stopped by she worshipped the ground he walked on and listened to everything he said. Unlike how she used to be towards him. A couple weeks later they jumped the broom. Irene had a baby that they named Maria. Tom carried on the tradition about telling the infant about her great great granddaddy Kunta Kinte. Matilda was excited to be grandma again.

Then one day they met a white man well really a boy that would change their outlook on how they viewed whites. The Boy tried to enlist in the War but they told him he was to young. So for the last couple of weeks he had been wondering for food. He finally made it to the Murray's plantation and Matilda started feeding him. He said that his name was George Johnson. Then he talked to Master Murray and said that he would work for food and board at first Master Murray said no.

Then he decided to make Johnson a Overseer. The slaves were upset but that didnt last long. George Johnson talked to Ashford, Tom and the rest of the slaves. He said that he has never been a overseer before and would appreciate it if they would teach him how to be one.

The family was so taken aback by it that they laughed and started telling him how to be a overseer. They family grew to really care for him. But then one day Johnson left and told him that he was going on business. After for years Chicken George returned from England. He was so happy to be back home that he rushed as fast as he could. When he arrived to Master Leas farm he heard the devastating news that his mother and Uncle Pompey had died and that his family had been sold to another plantation owner.

When he went to talk to Master Lea he hardly recognized him he had aged so much. He told Chicken George that he had to sell the family and that even him and his wife didnt have enough money to eat themselves. Master Lea started talking about how they could start cock fighting again. George said that he thought Master Lea was going to give him his freedom papers.

But Mater Lea said no. So Chicken George decided to get Master Lea Drunk and find the freedom papers that Master Lea had made before George left for England. After George got his papers he went over to the Murray's plantation to see his family. Matilda was so happy to see George. George told Matilda that he was now a free man. The family was excited that they finally had a free person in their family.

But some of the excitement left when George told his family that Grandma Kizzy had died. George spent many weeks on the plantation until a sheriff came to the plantation and told Master Murray that any free slave that stayed on a plantation for more than 6 weeks would be put back into slavery. So the family told George to leave because he was the first one freed and they didnt want he to be a slave again. So George said that when he could buy them he would be back. Then one day Ol Johnson returned with a very pregnant wife who looked like she could give birth at any moment.

She was a tiny, scrawny and looked about fourteen years old. The girls name was Martha and she was happy to met the Chicken George family. But when she delivered they baby it was dead. When the war finally ended and Lincoln gave his Emancipation Proclamation the Murray's had to free all of the slaves. But they said that any slave that wanted to stay could and that they would pay them. The family decided to stay on until they could save up enough money to get their own place.

Chicken George returned one day and told the family that they would be moving. George had found them a place to live. When Ol Johnson found out that they were leaving he asked if him and Martha could go to. The family voted on it and said that they could come along. So they started building wagons and getting supplies ready for their trip.

When they finally arrived at their destination the family they were happy for the trip to end. The family started building their houses and settling down. They built a church for them to worship at. They called the church New Hope Colored Methodist Episcopal. They family grew and when it came time for Toms other girl Cynthia to marry Tom was having none of it. But he finally gave in and Cynthia married a man named Will Palmer.

Will Palmer worked for the railroad. But ended up owning the Lumber yard. They had a little girl named Bertha that will spoiled enormously. She got anything that she wanted.
