The Lord of the Flies book begins by following a boy named Ralph who is stranded on an island after the plane he was on crashes. He was around 12 years old and was in good physical condition. He wanders around until he finds another boy named Piggy. Piggy is fat, has glasses, asthma, but is also intelligent. When they are walking around they find a conch shell which later comes to symbolize order. Piggy knows that you can blow on it and it makes a loud noise that carries very far.
When Ralph blows on it other boys slowly start to come out. A handful of boys around his age and many littlun's, whos names we do not learn. They sit down and talk and some introduce themselves. Jack is a red haired boy who seems nice and orderly in the beginning. Sam and Eric are twins. They elect Ralph as chief and come up with rules because were English, not savages.
Soon they realize they need a way to be rescued and so they use Piggy's glasses to start a fire. They add on more and more, but they do not contain it and soon large parts of the island are on fire. The first casualty occurs with one of the littlun's who had a birth mark. Earlier that little had said that he saw a beast that no one took real serious yet. While they are walking through the woods, Ralph, Jack, and Maurice see a pig caught in some brush and Jack goes to kill it, but delays and the pig escapes. Jack is not ready to kill and never has killed but he feels weak in front of the other and promises that it wont happen again.
Jack becomes obsessed with hunting and begins to resist Ralph. Ralph wants Jack to help with the shelters, which are the huts, but all Jack does is hunt. Part of Jacks choir was in charge of keeping the signal fire going, but he takes them with him on a hunt so that they can surround the pig and fail again. The fire burned out and while it was out a ship had passed not knowing that anyone was on the island. Ralph is made at Jacks carelessness, but Jack takes no real interest and becomes deeper consumed with hunting. The idea of the beast had become more spread and believed.
At one point a dead pilot who had parachuted to the ground was seen. His parachute was catching wind and so he sat up and sat back down with the wind. When some the kids saw this they were terrified and would not go near it. The fire could not continue to burn where it was because it was feared to be to close to the beast. When Jack and his choir boys, who had become hunters, killed their first pig he took much pride in it and wanted everyone to eat to their full. Jack wants everyone to know that he is responsible for this good food.
It is a real start to when he and Ralph begin to struggle for power. At one point Jack becomes angry at Ralph and the rules he no longer likes and asks who wants a new chief to be elected. When no one raises their hand he begins to cry and goes off saying he is starting his own group. Naturally his choir boys follow and it is the start of a new group. They do not worry about keeping the fire going and only hunt and play games. When they kill a pig they remember that they have no fire so they steal some from Ralph's group.
They invite anyone who wants to come to their feast and most everyone goes. While Ralph and Piggy are eating meat Simon discovers that the beast is not real and is only a dead pilot. When he runs out of the jungle to tell everyone then think he is the beast because he is down on all fours. They jump on top of him. He breaks out by himself a few feet away and is attacked again and killed. Then he is washed away at sea.
When this happened it was dark, but when he escaped for those few feet it is indicated that they probably knew it was Simon and attacked anyways. It does not say that exactly in the text, but one can assume. That is the second death of the story. More of Ralph's group have joined Jacks and Ralph only had himself, Piggy, Sam and Eric and some littlun's who dont do anything, but hang around. With only four people they cannot keep the fire going and are struggling. Jack and his group need fire again, but this time they go for the source which is Piggy's glasses.
They attack Ralph's group at night in their huts and succeed in taking the glasses. Piggy can no longer see and they have no way of starting a fire. Piggy wants to go to talk to Jack and his group and demand his glasses back. Ralph does not think that it will work, but goes along as do Sam and Eric. They approach the fortress type area and Piggy yells for his glasses. When no one listens he yells I got the conch!
The conch had been the thing Piggy held on to the longest that no longer meant anything. Whoever had the conch was suppose to be able to talk without being interrupted, but that rule had not been followed for ages. The boys push over a huge boulder that hits Piggy and sends him down a cliff about 40 feet where he hits the bottom and dies. Then Jack attacks Ralph, Ralph fends him off and runs away.
Sam and Eric were forced to join Jacks group and now Ralph was all alone. He later secretly talks to Sam and Eric who inform him that the next day the whole group will go hunting for him. Knowing this Ralph decides to hide close to their fortress hoping that they will pass by him quickly. That idea doesnt work and they discover where he is, but they still cant really get to him. They push over some boulders, but do not hit him and so they decide to burn him out. They light the island on fire and Ralph runs.
He hides again, but is found by Roger and keeps running until he stumbles out on the beach where he sees a British Navy officer and everyone stops in their tracks. Playing war he says. No one has died have they? The officer asks this jokingly, but Ralphsanswer shocks him. Only two. Really 3 died, but he didnt even think of the little.
The officer was able to spot them because of the fire which is ironic because Ralph was always the one trying to keep the fire going, but in the end it is Jacks fire that gets them rescued. The boys were Rescued.
