Abomination - The Coxon and Dewhurst families How are the Coxon and Dewhurst families different? In my opinion, Martha and Scotts families differ in may ways. One of which, is their views on how to punish their child / children . Marthas family agree with physical punishment, which seems old fashioned and cruel. Martha hates being hurt this way but has grown to expect it: Father lost his temper and slapped my face. Mother said something to him on the stairs and he came back.

Maybe that is what her parents have brain washed her to believe, that she doesnt have to be taken seriously. I would feel terribly patronized. Martha is much more like her outcast sister.
The families homes are very different also. Where Scotts home is bright, modern and bathed within the sun, Marthas is dark, old and cast into the shadows: I was looking round her kitchen. It was gorgeous, like a kitchen in a magazine Light, bright and shiny. Martha feels in awe of this otherworldly kitchen. She has dreams of owning one just like it when she has her own home, when she is without her parents. The writer uses the phrase: Like a kitchen in a magazine instead of using the word, modern.

Their were no house plants or flowers and yet there was an impression of clutter, of things chosen without care, crammed in corners, littering every surface. The writer creates a dull and dark image, old and greatly depressing. This reminds me of a witch's kitchen, and Marthas mum could resemble a witch, keeping Martha, the locked up princess, captured. It reminds me of a kitchen Ive read in a book; The Secret Circle trilogy by L J Smith. In that book, Cassies Nan is a witch, and has a really dark and out-of-date kitchen.

Martha has home cooked, and boring foods, which her father refers to as plain food. This shows that Scotts mum is kind, she brings them pop and chocolate which shows that she thinks of others, as well as her son. She wants Martha to feel welcomed.

Martha must feel glad about having Kit-Kats, whereas Scott wouldnt really notices the gesture as much. In conclusion; I think that the families are very different.
They contrast greatly in their methods of raising their child / children . I think that the modern, kind and caring way is the best, as Scott is a happier person.
