Fate is not a question of chance, but a question of choice. In Romeo and Juliet, the story was developed by the choices made by fate, not Romeo and Juliet. Some of the choices were crucial to the development of the plays outcome, for instance Romeos banishment and Paris engagement to Juliet. By killing off Romeo and Juliet, it meant that Shakespeare was able to reveal the other characters true identities. Romeo and Juliet were fated to be with each other, but they were also fated to be with each other after death. Shakespeare showed that Romeo and Juliets fate was controlled through signs, dreams, and premonitions throughout the play, nothing to do with the couples actions.

From the beginning of the play, it was already stated that the young couple were destined to die. A pair of star-crosses lovers take their life/Whose misadventure d piteous overthrows/Doth with their death bury they parents strife (Prologue. 6 - 8) To be able to die of fate, one has to believe in fate itself. Romeo believed in the stars by saying this before leaving to the Capulets ball: I fear too early, for my mind misgives/ Some consequence yet hanging in the stars/ Shall bitterly begin this fearful date. (1. 4. 113 - 115) Romeo knew that his actions werent because of him, but the stars, ... he that hath steerage over my course/ Direct my sail (1. 4. 119. 120) Romeo believes that he is not the one making his decisions, but something beyond his control: fate. The theme of death images is echoed throughout the play.

First with Juliet saying how the love between her and Romeo were too like the lightening, which doth cease to be ere can say, It lightens. (2. 3. 126 - 127), meaning that as quick as their love came is as quick as it will go. Then Friar Lawrence echoes how their love is like gunpowder, by saying, "These violent delights have violent ends/ And in their triumph die, like fire and powder. " Romeo and Juliet both have dreams related to their deaths. Juliet says, "Methinks I see thee, now thou art so low, /As one dead in the bottom of a tomb. " (3. 5. 55 - 56), which means that Romeo to her looks like hes in a tomb when hes talking to her and he eventually ends up in one. The images of death haunt Romeo and Juliet until they actually do die. Romeo and Juliets fate also resulted in the remaining characters rebirth. Because of the situations involving Romeo and Juliet, we were able to discover the true identities of the characters.

As first glance, it seems as though Friar Lawrence had only the intentions to marry Romeo and Juliet and help end the feud between their families. In actuality, we learn that, out of selfish acts, Friar Lawrence was only trying to help himself by wanting to take the glory of being a hero, For then thou canst not pass to Mantua, Where thou shalt live till we can find a time To blaze your marriage, reconcile your friends, Beg pardon of the Prince, and cell thee back With twenty hundred thousand times more joy Than thou west forth in lamentation. (3. 3. 159 - 164) Friar is hoping that the parents of Romeo and Juliet will welcome them back and thank him for bringing the two together. If it wasnt for Friar Laurence's plan failing, then Romeo and Juliet would have survived. Lord Capulet, in the beginning, respected any lucid decision that Juliet made regarding marriage. Later, Shakespeare reveals the true Capulet after seeing Juliet act so tenacious that he wants to disown his own daughter.

Even, Lady Capulet shows herself when she says I would the fool were married to her grave. " (3. 5. 145), showing that she doesnt really care about Juliet, and introducing another death image in the story. Nurse gives the impression of being the loving maternal influence to Juliet, but when an authority figure isnt present, Nurse is absolutely sardonic. She taunts Juliet about Romeos message and his death. We see the Nurses ugly ghastly self when the circumstances change. During the events leading to the couples deaths, the characters reveal that they dont care about Romeo and Juliet, but only whats best for them.

Romeo and Juliet were fated to die because the whole plays outcome depended on their deaths. We were able to see the characters true motives when the circumstances chanced. Fate forced Romeo and Juliet to make the decisions they had to. None of the deaths would have occurred if it had not been written in the stars.
