Almost everyone knows of The Axis Powers. They were enemies of The Allied Powers in World War II. They are synonymous with The Holocaust because Adolf Hitler was the man who started The Holocaust and he ws the dictator of Germany. The Axis Powers originally was the alliance between Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany and Benito Mussolini's Fascist Italy. Italy did not do much during the war though. The goals of The Axis Powers clearly emerged in the Italo-Germany Pact.
It was a pact that was signed in May of 1939 in which Italy and Germany promised to help each other in the time of war. Germany also signed another pact because Hitler believed that Germany had lost World War I due to the fact that Germany had to fight on two sides. The pact was a ten-year, non-aggression pact between the USSR and Germany. The pact was later abolished when the USSR began to help the Allied Powers fight Germany. Hitler wasn't well known during World War I. As a matter of fact, Hitler was a private during the war and ended up gaining power because he appealed to a large number of German people.
He appealed to them by a combination of an effective and well-practiced style of speaking with what looked like un doubtable sincerity and determination. This helped Hitler find a large audience for his program of national revival, racial pride in Germanic values, hatred for France and of the Jewish and other un-German races, and despise for the Weimer Republic. With the way he spoke, Hitler convinced the people of Germany to believe that a dictatorship was the only thing that could save Germany from the problems it was having. Hitler's views only changed a little in the years to follow; yet he still managed to draw an increasing number of people to his speeches. On September 30, 1938, France and Great Britain agreed to let Nazi Germany have a piece of Czechoslovakia. Hitler told the British and French that it would be his last demand for territory in Europe.
Hitler ended up breaking this pact when he took over Prague. During that same year, Germany attacked Poland and defeated them in one month. Poland was then split into two parts with Hitler's Nazi Germany taking part and Stalin's Communist USSR taking the other part. The invasion was what started World War II. Japan entered the war a while later, when on December 7, 1941, they bombed Pearl Harbor, sinking some the United States's hips. One of the main ships sunk there was the U.
S. S. Arizona. This caused the United States to join the war one-day later. One of the major battles between the United States and Japan was the Battle of Midway. It was a sea-battle, in which Japan fought with the United States's hips, Navy planes, and Army planes from Midway.
The battle lasted four days. The United States lost the carrier Yorktown, a destroyer, and 150 planes. Japan took the worst of the battle losing four aircraft carriers, two cruisers, three destroyers, and 275 planes. The Japanese loss ended their serious expansion in the Pacific Ocean. Most people have heard of a concentration camp, especially in World War II with the Nazis.
The Nazis established concentration camps almost right after taking control of Germany on January 30, 1933. What really impacted the amount of people placed into the concentration camps was a decree that removed constitutional protection against the arresting of people on impulse. The camp's size and number greatly increased during World War II. Some of the major camps of World War II were Auschwitz, Natzweiler, Neuengamme, Gross-Rosen, Stutthof, Lublin, Hinzert, Vught, Dora, and Bergen. During World War II millions of prisoners entered the camps from every German occupied country in Europe.
In 1942, the SS Central Office fro Economy and Administration took control of the concentration camps, and prisoners were exploited as forced laborers. The inmates were usually worked to death. When they were no longer able to work they were killed by fatal injections, gassing, or shooting. Also during World War II, the Nazis formed a kind of sub-concentration camp called an extermination center. An extermination center is the place that was used to kill off entire populations.
In these centers the SS systematically gassed millions of Jews and thousands of Roma and Soviet prisoners of war. More than six million people perished in Nazi camps. Besides millions of Jews being killed in the camps, millions of them were killed outside of the camps. One of the most notorious camps was Auschwitz, which is a town in souther Poland. It was the largest concentration camp and death camp run by the Nazis during World War II. The Auschwitz complex was the site of a scientifically and efficiently executed genocide.
The majority of people killed at Auschwitz were Jews. Auschwitz has become the prime symbol of the Holocaust of European Jews. Auschwitz didn't really have a history until World War II. Nazis established Auschwitz in April of 1940 under the direction of Heinrich Himmler.
Auschwitz originally housed political prisoners from occupied Poland and concentration camps in Germany. Prisoners were transported to the camp by rail. The arrivals at the complex were divided into three groups. One group went to the gas chambers within a few hours, the second group was used as slave labor, adn the third group went through medical experiments at the hands of Joseph Mengele. The third group consisted mainly of twins and dwarfs. In 1943, resistance organizations developed in Auschwitz.
They only helped a few people escape though. Another less known concentration camp was Dachau. Dachau is a Bavarian town, ten miles northwest of Munich. Before the end of World War II, over 160, 000 slave laborers were confined at Dachau. There were facilities for mass murder and cremation of camp's inmates. Dachau was also a medical research facility for the SS.
On April 21, 1945, the USSR attacked the Germans. Hitler committed suicide, so he could escape capture from the Russians. On May 4, 1945, General Montgomery received Germany's surrender in Denmark, the Netherlands, and Northwestern Germany. The concentration camps were then liberated.
Auschwitz was liberated when the USSR army marched into Auschwitz on January 27, 1945. The found about 7600 survivors abandoned there, but more than 58, 000 prisoners were already evacuated and sent on a final death march to Germany. Dachau was also liberated. Dachau was liberated when the United States marching troops heard screams, so they followed the screams until they came upon Dachau. When they arrived, they saw 20 - 30 men hanging from poles. They were still alive.
They went into a barracks and found everyone lying across bunks, in three layers, with their hands towards them, and the prisoners were also chained by their ankles, left to starve to death. The Americans then went into another barracks where they found people so weakened they couldn't lift their own bodies. Some men in the barracks were promising revenge, the greener ones were vomiting, and the odor was terrible. The soldiers then found 20 SS women guards. The prisoners were trying to attack the guards, but the Americans prevented them from doing so. The prisoners were now free and some of them carried others who could not walk.
There were many results of World War II. The Allies ended up winning in Europe because of the pounding inflicted upon the Germans by the USSR, the perseverance of the British, and the air production of the American air and armaments superiority. Victory in Europe resulted in a takeover over Eastern Europe by the USSR. This takeover ended up causing the Cold War.
In Asia, the United States victory resulted in the takeover of China and Manchuria by the People's Republic of China, chaos in Southeast Asia, and a seperation of Korea, with the USSR in the north and the United States in the south. This all happened after Japan was bombed and the Germans surrendered. Many people believe that even though the Axis Powers lost the war, they really did some extensive damage to the Jewish race, all of Europe, and the United States. World War II was one of the deadliest wars mankind has ever witnessed.
