Mike Gusties Superlative, Proactively Executed, Homogenous, and Good Essay as Pertaining to the Failing Youth of America and The Apology The youth of America are a morass of filth, apathy and corruption, and they are nearly blind to the impending doom their immorality brings upon them. Compared to the youth of the 1700 s, the teenagers these days deserve the title disposable teens or throwaway kids. For evidence, I would like to draw your attention to several factors as examples of their amorality and vice. The primary being the nearly nonexistent discipline imposed upon modern youth, followed by a complete lack of patriotism- with the icing on the cake being a sharp decline in witch burnings. From the beginning, I would like to point out that the decline in witch-burnings is most assuredly NOT from a decline in the number of witches; it stems from a decline in the acceptability of being a witch, or Wiccan in modern society. As further evidence of this, my spellcheck forced me to capitalize wiccan as I was writing it!

Only God and Jesus should be capitalized, not wiccan. For that matter, neither should hitler or satan. If teens were moral, witches and public executions of these would be as commonplace as they were in the 1700 s. Some people say that kids are better these days because of concrete evidence such as college admission statistics or employment rates, but these things do not make teens better, merely more active, active in the ways of SATAN! The only thing to measure better is morality, and kids these days obviously violate more of the ten commandments than ever before, making young women pregnant and leaving them to their own ends, as well as cheating on vocabulary quizzes! I deeply apologize for the preceding two paragraphs, but the point I was attempting to convey was the absurdity of trying to establish a concrete stand on an undefined foundation.

The problem of Americas youth can be argued either way: theyre better, theyre worse, moral, amoral, the same- whatever you choose- and on top of this, one would be able to find evidence or data to support any of these assertions. Data is subjective, just like opinion, and indeed, the latter influences the former. Economists would be able to prove to you that our economy is failing yet we are doing better than we ever have before. The same applies for an essay such as this, so rather than attempt to prove a point either way; I believe I must defend my position by explaining why I believe it is impossible or unethical to pass judgment on todays teens. Although Socrates adheres to the school of thought that there are moral absolutes, I believe that in order to pass judgment based on adherence to these absolutes is unfair. I believe that the differences between the environment children grow up in now and the environment in which they were raised in the past are substantial.

Therefore I shall discuss why teens today are bad, but then I would like to consider those factors which influence modern behavior which were nonexistent in the past. Many people believe that children today are materialistic, always striving for more stuff, things they really dont need, but pine after incessantly. Examples of such are clothes, cars, CDs, cell phones and video games. And it is true- all of it. The best, most educated, sensible teen these days always wants more.

Our consumerist society has been pushed upon them since birth, and they have that mentality ingrained into their being- myself included. They may not desire the deeper things, or may not seem to desire them, but I believe they do, for in addition to materialism, the youth of America today have a higher suicide rate than ever before. This may be a reaction to the stress, unnatural desires and compulsions offered in the modern day, or so some psychologists say. Our consumerist, superficial society wears on all of our nerves at times, and some people cannot get over it. The disadvantaged- disadvantaged in any way- gain no support from us.

Since 1960, Americas suicide rate has tripled (in teens ages 15 - 19). This, although quite a regrettable and immoral thing, must be recognized as not being entirely the fault of the teens. After all, who created our society to be as it is? It certainly was not the teens themselves, and as such, it is not the teens themselves who are the cause of the pressures and extraordinary challenges pressed upon them. Another thing which is true and many critics enjoy pointing out is the promiscuity of modern teens. True, teen pregnancy is a greater problem now than it has been in the past, and more teens are engaging in these dangerous activities.

This is immoral according to some philosophies, but consider what society believes is acceptable now. Children brought up in the wake of the sexual revolution of the 60 s have learned their values from parents. Be free. Contributing to factors the youth of today must overcome is the problem of divorce and infidelity. Our divorce rate is nearly 60 %, and it does not just affect those who are directly involved in the separation.

Millions of teens live in single-parent homes or are split between houses, teens such as myself, and are forced to cope with this fact every day of their lives. I believe it is a credit to Americas youth that we do as well as we do considering the severe degradation of the nuclear family structure. Comparing the youth of today to the youth of the past is like comparing a Ford F- 350 to a slice of untanned leather- they are completely dissimilar. However, not every accusation against teens is true. In fact, some are simply blatantly false lies spread by people who just like to complain.

One such is that kids are lazy and they dont want to work. There have always been some bad eggs but there is NO evidence supporting this assertion. In fact, college enrollment has gone up so much that we have too many kids going to college if anything. Organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America, the YMCA, the Red Cross, and others are experiencing record student involvement.

We may have a 50 % college dropout rate, but greater than 50 % more students are attempting college than 50 years ago. Such accusations are merely irresponsible rhetoric serving to add to the baggage our society carries around with its youth. Where did we go wrong? What caused this drastic paradigm shift? I believe it started around the industrial revolution with the change from a puritan religious mindset to a secular, purely capitalist one. Science and progress have its tolls, and the fallout of the knowledge explosion is being felt now in various social issues, impacting areas such as morality and ethics.

What we need now is another Socrates, a modern philosopher-leader like in Plato's Republic. Something must halt our downward spiral, but focusing on the failings of teens will accomplish nothing. Our current government, while an extremely good idea, cannot possibly solve the problems we are going through morally simply due to the nature of representative lawmaking. The popular mindset perpetuates our materialistic ideologies, and if the masses make our legislation, nothing fundamental enough will change. The ultimate solution still eludes me, but like many things, I believe it is easier to see what must not continue rather than what must be done.

Some may say that the evidence I bring before you is not concrete, and the foundation for my argument is not solid. Yet I challenge he who says that to quantify his data. Give me a statistic for morality- or virtuous living. Conduct an unbiased survey of the nation to see just how many teens are doing whats right according to the situation, but first you must discover this set of universal truths for yourself. I believe Jesus once said, Let the first among you who hath no sin cast the first stone.
