... of others as well as the bullies, by getting back at them through physical violence. Ender was small, but was very skilled and quick with his body. One such instance of this was on Earth, when some of his classmates had continually picked on him. Finally, Ender unleashed his furry upon them, not only with physical violence, but using his intelligence to beat them for good. "As soon as they let go of him. And as soon as they did, Ender kicked out high and hard, catching Stilson square in the breastbone...

the others backed away and Stilson lay motionless... Ender was trying to figure out a way to forestall vengeance. To keep them from taking him in a pack tomorrow. I have to win this now, and for all time, or I'll fight it every day and it will get worse and worse. Ender then kicked Stilson again and again... Ender looked at the others coldly. "You might be having some idea of ganging up on me...

Just remember what I do to people who try to hurt me. From then on you'd be wondering when I'd get you, and how bad it would be. " (Card, 7) Ender was a very gifted child and he knew that. However, Ender had much resentment of what he was, a "Third." His brother Peter, as well as the other children, ingrained this into his soul. "They only authorized you because I was so promising. But I didn't pan out.

You did better. But I don't want a better little brother, Ender. I don't want a Third. " (Card, 12) Ender knew exactly what his brother was like; evil, malicious, and a true killer, even though he was only twelve, and Ender being blood related thought he had Peter's traits in him and was afraid of turning out just like he had. Ransom, on the other hand, was much older then Ender. Ransom is extremely intelligent, being a doctor who graduated at the top of his class.

Ransom also knew of jealousies that arose from his intelligence. Ransom was told this by his kidnappers, who were also former classmates. They described in detail of their resentment of his intelligence, and just how merely seeing him made them "physically ill." (Lewis, 27) Ransom was so intelligent, that he was, within a matter of weeks, able to pick up the language commonly spoke between the extra-terrestrials, and used this to fit in with them. It was on this new planet that Ransom felt "accepted." (Lewis, 127) Ransom had been a social outcast, which was also displayed from his "lonely trek across these wet English lowlands." (Lewis, 10) Ransom, at the beginning of the novel was alone, on a hike through the English countryside, not because he was poor, but to find himself. He was unfortunately kidnapped by two rogues. In Ender's Game, Ender encountered quite a bit of jealousy not only from others such as school mates and superior's, but from his own brother, Peter.

The individuals who were jealous of him ultimately enabled Ender to succeed, not only in what he was set out to do, kill the Buggers, but to fulfill and have a better understanding of himself, as well as others around him. Without these tribulations, Ender would never have achieved anything and is what made him truly unique, and able to conquer his fears and strive to be his best. He learned that no matter who got in front of him, or what decisions might make or break him, he could overcome his doubts, and emerge victorious. Peter was the key to Ender's learning process. Without Peter, Ender would not have been able to make the final key decision to beat out all of those who repress him or hinder his progress, such as the instance with the boy, Stilson. There was also, when Bonzo, another boy jealous of Ender, looking to "settle the score" with him.

He knew that if he did not completely the boys frequent attacks, Ender could not make it to be top of the class, or make it as Army Leader, because if he never stood up for himself it would show weakness. Ender, finally overcoming himself at the end of the novel was able to make a key decision which would end the doubts about himself, as well as the war between Earth and the Buggers. This was brought out through Mazer Rackham. Mazer, on the day of the final battle although Ender did not know it was his last day had let Ender have complete freedom. No one to tell Ender to get dressed, to take a shower, to eat, to practice the war games. Something that Ender had been used to for most of his life.

Instead, Ender did what he believed was right, and that was to finish what he had begun. So as Ender had done for the past few years, he went into the command chair, which he had worked so hard to get to, and waited for his instructions. However, Mazer told him as he strapped in to his console, that today's "game" was not like any other. Rightly so, "Ender found himself out-numbered one-thousand to one... " (Card, 292) He reflected to himself, "The spectators watching him noticed that is wasn't a fair test. Not that it made any difference... He saw him his mind Bonzo and his vicious little knot of friends, confronting him, threatening him; he had been able to shame Bonzo into fighting him alone.

That would hardly work here... He could not surprise the enemy with his ability as he had done with the older boys in the battle room... I don't care anymore, thought Ender. you can keep your game. If you won't even give me a chance, why should I play?

Like his last game in Battle School, when they put two armies against him... Forget it, Mazer. I don't care if I pass your test, I don't care if I follow your rules... " (Card, 292 - 93) Ender shouted commands to his fleet, ignoring his own losses, the rules, what others expected from him, and what he expected from himself. He went against all odds and destroyed the Buggers. Ransom was kidnapped and brought to another planet, a foreign place, and went against all odds do survive against what would normally be impossible, and and in the end ultimately found himself through a higher power. Oyarsa explains to Ransom that he has been chosen, to again build communication between Melacandra, and the "Silent Planet", or Earth.

Due to Ransom passing failing tests that Oyarsa has put around him, he has found his place, and to is able choose what he wishes to do, to reopen contact between the two planets. Ransom also discovers his fears within himself, and the novel displays what we as humans are afraid of in our lives, the unknown. Both novels depict the very in depth working of society in how unjust as well as corrupt it is, not only in a science - fiction world, but our own as well. It displays a broad view on how one person's will, after much stress, can truly succeed and overcome all doubt. Bibliography Car, Orson Scott. "Ender's Game." New York.
