Today I am going to compare racism in TKAMB between racism in real life situations. The main topics that I have chosen are racism in the form of bullying and racism as in the form of discrimination. In the book there are many more forms of racism as bullying than I thought there would be.
They are common like when people say Nigger talk they mean talking without making sense or talking with out proper wording. There are everyday issues like while building a snowman partly out of mud Scout says as a joke Jem I aint ever heard of a Nigger snowman. Here they find paying out Negroes funny. The kids in the book tease scout and Jem because they have an annoying nature. As when Cecil Jacobs announces that Scout Finch's daddy defends niggers and when Francis calls Scout a Nigger lover These terms although are nearly said in the way that saying Nigger lover is just like saying snot-nosed. While in real life bullying occurs because of many reason which can be that It makes bullies feel powerful, Because they want to impress others, Because they have an unrelated prejudice against the victim, the bully simply doesnt know how offensive they are being, Because others have influenced them to do so, Because they have been taught this way, Because they find it a matter of amusement, Because they are forced to do so to fit in, Because they havent thought about what they are saying and have no previous thoughts before they open their mouths, Or they do so to get even with the bully who bullied them.
Racism As in discrimination and extreme hatred In TKAMB there are many instances where the black Negroes are discriminated against or the Negroes discriminate against the white people. Situations, which occur in this book also, occur in real life. Many where racism is a tool of discrimination, situations like excluding people from social groups or from communities or not giving them equal rights. Situations in TKAMB are seen in the following instances. Where cal wants to take the children to the black church people try to oppose her.
Being around Negroes is derogatory to your reputation and a punishment this is shown when talking about Boo Radley The sheriff hadnt the heart to but him in jail alongside Negroes Calpurnia had more education than most coloured folks did blacks were not given a formal education. It was not right putting a black before a white as seen in the court case when the jury couldnt possibly be expected to take Tom Robinsons word against the Ewells. While for the case of racism as hatred in the book It wouldnt be a serious offence to shoot a Nigger if he was in your yard as seen when Jem dill and scout attempted to see boo. Cecil Jacobs says My folks said your daddy was a disgrace an that Nigger ought to hang from the water-tank! As most people don have much respect for niggers lives. By showing you the differences I hope I can explain why the issues of racism occur in the book and in real life.
Firstly, when I first became conscious of racism in peoples lives I slowly realized a few important facts, which I became aware of by learning the hard way. Firstly, it is very often seen the case, that racism is just a phenomenon and physiological condition basically a condition brought on to one self by the influence of others. The way most people explain racism is racism is just human nature. But until one has been a victim of racism, why should they have any other views. What this thought comes down to is a theory and a theory that is incorrect. What most of these people think (and Im not saying everyone of these people think this way) is racism is constant, unchanging just like the weather. As long as you think this way there will not be change and you will not see change. Take a while to think of it, Racism obviously had a start and what ever has a start also can have an end.
Secondly I would like to bring up the fact that racial differences arent real and that we have no difference in abilities. Only if you believe that you arent any different in capabilities to some noble prizewinner of a different racial background or some poor person struggling to survive. Now it all comes down to simple physiology which all of us have gained from somewhere. This thought has embedded in us for so long that we will not believe it when are told. And most people will turn a blind eye to it without realizing that it is not their fault that they think so but they think it is far to embarrassing admitting that it is true, so they will say that they are bigoted. But only when you realize that it is not a shame to have thought so will you believe what I am saying.
The simple point is that we are all afraid of what is different. But you will question why? But the answer is that because when something is different we do not know what it is possible of doing therefore by trying to stop it or getting rid of it you will feel more secure. Now this is no experts opinion just mine and I am not sure if I am correct. But the difference between me and someone else who educates people professionally about this is that, They have been taught this stuff but I have learnt it by experience. Thirdly there is a misconception that racism is old fashioned ignorance.
This is not correct because in ancient days we had less understanding of the world therefore it would a cause to be racist. But as the world shows today that racism has been on an increase ever since. Think of the World War II no one can say the world was stupid then. This shows that racism is entirely because of man and can be ridden of.
