Silent Valley was actually the name adopted by the British when they first saw the peculiar nature related to this beautiful valley surrounded by mountain ranges. The thing they noticed was the silence in the forests in the valley. Unlike what is found in the other forests of Kerala where crickets hum throughout the day and become more active as the night approaches, it was noticed that here there was no humming even during the night. The silence becomes eerily loud as we approach the depths of the forest. The entire valley was declared a national preserved area by the Indra Gandhi government. The main attraction of the valley is its varied flora and fauna itself.

A thick and lush evergreen forest surrounds the valley's entirety. The Silent Valley is said to be abundant in wildlife and a vast array of undiscovered and unrecorded species of tropical insects and birds. The valley is said to contain tigers, wild elephants, foxes, wild boar, wild tree mongoose etc. It is also home to a wide number of rare and varied wild insects. The clay houses of tree ants, the mole hills and the enormous spider webs open up a world for the display of the curious visitor. The scattered, fresh wild elephant dung and the enormous 'mara patti', tree dog or wild mongoose with giant tails, seen on the way to the park offer a rare treat to the visitor's eyes.

Once inside the park and on the way to the river Kunti, the famed lion tailed monkey or the 'Simon Value Kurangu' can be seen atop the tree tops. The Silent Valley is said to be one of the last existing natural enclave for these highly endangered species. The paved road leads only till the forest check post at about 21 kilometers from the reserve. It is from here that the passes and the necessary forest guide to accompany the party is arranged. This post opens at 8 'o clock sharp every morning. A pass for the individual as well as the fee for the guide and the jeep that is hired is to be remitted at the check post office.

The jeep is necessary for the 21 kilometer travel that lies ahead before reaching the outer periphery of the park. Though a rough one, the journey is exiting as well as entertaining all the way long due to the frequent encounters with some of the wild animals mentioned above. Any kind of artificial, human waste disposal is strictly prohibited in the park, especially plastic wastes. To take care of this, as well as to see that casual flicks of lighted cigarettes as well as matchsticks don't lead to forest fire, is why the guide accompanies us. The heaps of dry leaves as well as the dry sticks and wood present in abundance in the forest, especially during the late winter and the summer season are easily caught fire. Though the presence of tribal people inside the National Park is absent, they have settled down in the areas adjoining the boundary.

The park is continually combed by the park rangers and the forest guards who check for the existence of such illegal activities as: distillation of illegal liquor, cultivation and harvest of ganja, poaching of wild animals etc. Theirs is the tough job requiring them to scout the whole forest during rain and shine looking for arrack, ganja and poachers with nothing more than, maybe, a long knife for protection. But it is a common known fact that the reason for the non-proportional development of nearby cities like Mannarakkadu etc, is mostly because of money earned by such illegal activities. Another great feature in this park is the presence of a guest house inside the park. This combined with the several forest guard quarters littered throughout, makes the park a fantastic destination for wild trekking enthusiasts. There is nothing like a warm bed awaiting you after a long trek through the heart of such lush evergreen forests and a dip in the chilled waters of the river Kunti afterwards.
