When he lands, the music speeds up once more to show that the fighting is far from over!
As Neo continues to pull of some amazing moves and reversals, the music gets more dramatic, unlike before with just instruments, this time it has words as well, which could be seen as being more epic. The reason for the change in music is to show the endurance of Neo and the Agents. The music also creates more meaning to the scene to show it is one of the most important throughout the trilogy. Half way through the impressive fight scene, it cuts to a passer by.
This gives you a break from the fight scene because it its hard to follow and also it would get boring if it was just continuous fighting for ten minutes. The passer by morphs into a different agent. The music played why doing this is quite scary because what is happening is not a normal thing. The language between the two is very formal to show Agent Smiths character, but after an exchange in formal words, he clones this Agent into another clone of himself.
You will notice that it doesnt take very long, whereas with Neo it took a lot longer, this is to get over Neos power and resistance. When Agent Smith says Me, Me, Me it shows a close up, this is to show he is smiling that there are more of him that gives him a better chance of defeating Neo. After the cloning process takes place, the creepy music stops to show it has finished and there is only a low volume piece playing in the background. Next, one of the Agents squashes a tomato, the Walowinski brothers use this tomato as a metaphor, to get across the Agents power. Along with stepping on the tomato, it could be also seen as a button, because as soon he steps on it the fast paced, dramatic music starts again.
When the fighting is shown once more, it shows Neo being thrown across the park and landed harshly on the floor. Here it shows a close up on Neos face. It shows he is not hurt and is ready to continue battling. Also, after he nips up, it shows a close up of this too, to show the athleticism of Neo once more. After a few more punches and kicks by Neo, the camera switches to show even more clones of Agent Smith coming in.
It shows mid shots of this to show the actual amount of how many are coming for Neo. If they had shown a close up on only one or two or their faces you wouldnt have realised how many more there are. Unlike the first part of the fight scene, this time it shows a lot more close ups. I think the reason for this is to show what people are feeling after fighting for so long, they must be all tired but they do not want to lose, so to get across their emotions more clearly they show more close ups of the Agents and of Neo himself. When Neo backflip's, it shows a high angle shot. This is the first in the in the fight scene which gives the move more meaning.
By using a high angle shot it gets across that Neo is bigger and stronger than the Agents, and he is the one that is winning the fight. Again, a few seconds after the backflip, Neo front flips away from the Agents, once more it is shown with a high angle shot. Firstly it shows Neo in power once again, but also it gives you an idea on how many Agents he is battling, because if you look you can see they are grouped up and Neo is out numbered by a lot. The music now is a lot more dramatic than before.
This is to show that the fight has been going on for a long time now and that anything could happen due to Neo being extremely tired. Also, at this part in the fight, the camera angles switch frequently, this is to add to the dramatic music and is also to show how fast and agile Neo is to be able to fight of 20 + Agents. In the next few moments of the fight you can see the use of special effects. As Neo jumps up and kicks one of the Agents you can clearly see it is computerised. Even though you can see this clearly this, the detail used in the special effects are truly amazing as it looks almost life like. This is one of the reason Matrix Reloaded won numerous awards for their use of special effects.
Next, when Neo gets hit and flies off into the wall, it is shown in slow motion, this technique has been used before to get across the important of what is happening. Neo has been fighting for a good 8 minutes now and must be extremely tired so it shows him being kicked into the wall in slow motion to get that across more clearly. But to show that Neo has the heart of a lion, it shows a close up of his face. The music stops now, but as soon as he looks up and is ready to give it his all again the music restarts once more, this is to show Neos resistance and that he will never give up. When Neo picks up the pole from the floor, it shows these next few moments in slow motion, it gets across his power but also to show his tiredness. He can no longer fight with his bare hands and has to use weapons to fight of the Agents.
When he hits an Agent with the pole, the bricks at the bottom fly off to show how damaging it is. It is also in slow motion to add emphasis on the power shown here. When Neo shows his Martial Art like skills as he spins the pole around, it shows a close up of his face asif to say bring it. This gets across that Neo is not scared of the Agents and by using a close up it helps the audience understand that more clearly. Special effects are used once more as he flies in the air with the pole in his hand, this could not be done with a real actor, so they use the special effects to create a unique style within the film that differs it from others. To show the power of the pole, it shows an Agent coming towards Neo in slow motion, it shows the moments just before he is about to hit him in slow motion as well as the music slows.
But when he hits him, the music starts again and it goes back to normal speed, this gives the hit more impact and gets across the true power of the pole and Neo himself. The next few moments are amazing in terms of special effects, it shows Neo hitting of the Agents in slow motion to put across how hard he his actually hitting them. It shows his technique with the pole as he spins it around in slow motion also to give the audience a better picture of how skilful the chosen one Neo actually is. When one of the Agents is knocked of into the distance by Neos pole, it shows a close up of his anger. The music stops in the background to add emphasis on his line coming up. He says more which is a memorable line in the film, and if the dramatic music was played while he was saying it, it wouldnt have as much meaning.
It then shows Neos distress of more Agents turning up in a zoom shot. It gets across Neos emotions better, rather than showing him from a mid shot. When more Agents turn up, it shows a birds eye view shot. This is to show how many are actually turning up just like earlier on in the scene. It then cuts to an even high birds eye view shot to get the audience to really understand how many Agents Neo is actually fighting off.
This is the most effective shot because if shown from a mid-shot for instance, other Agents could be blocking others out, so you wouldnt realise how many are there. Now that Neo has to search deep inside himself to win against the Agents he uses the pole to spin around and hit the Agents. To show the tempo at which Neo is doing it, the camera pans around extremely fast. This gets across the speed of Neo more, and also is another special effect used by the Walowinski Brothers. In the final moments on the fight scene, the bundle is shown from a birds eye view shot.
This is to show how many Agents are against Neo, and how many he has to battle to get out of the bundle. The music stops as it shows a close up of Neo at the bottom and one of the Agents. It is to show how intense the Agent looks and show to Neos focus. Neo then breaks out of the bundle and it is shown from a long shot. As there are so many Agents a long show would be the most suitable to get every Agent in.
The camera also pans around as powers out to show that the Agents are coming off at different angles. Now Neo flies away from the Agents and it is shown from a birds eye view shot. This is to show how high Neo is going, and also to show how many Agents Neo was battling in the end. After it shows Neo flying off, it shows the Agents once more. The music has stopped now, this is to show the fight is over.
It also shows this shot in a close up, it gets across the Agents disappointment of not defeating Neo because if they was shown from a long shot you wouldnt have been able to see their emotions as clearly. As the Agents walk off, the music slowly fades out, the Agents walk of casually and the shot is left on the real Agent Smith, it is a close up of his face with the other Agents walking off in the background. The reason it only shows the true Agents Smiths face is because the clones are not real people and have no feeling, whereas the real Agent Smith is furious at the fact him and his army could not defeat the chosen one, Neo. In conclusion, the Walowinski used various different techniques to show the fight scene in the best possible way. They used different camera shots to show the speed of the fight and their emotions. The music played in the background added feeling to the fight and helped give emphasis on certain moments.
The sound effects used added to the punches and kicks to make them seem more impact ful and more meaningful. And finally the special effects created a unique scene which help make the Matrix a cut above the rest.
