... career had started to die down in the late 1950 s. In 1953 he moved into television as a host and frequent performer for the General Electric Theatre. He eventually went from host and program supervisor of GE Theatre to actually producing and claiming stakes in the TV show itself and at one point Reagan was earning about $ 125, 000 a year (equivalent to $ 600, 000 today). In politics Ronald Reagan started out as a Democrat supporting Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his New Deal but he gradually became more of a conservative and eventually became Republican. He was dubbed The Great Communicator for his ability to express ideas and emotions in an almost personal manner, even during his public speeches.

He sharpened these skills as an actor, live television and radio host, and later as a politician. He started on his path towards his career in politics while president of the Screen Actors Guild where he gave many speeches on his opposition to communism and its effect on Hollywood. His employment at GE Theatre also furthered his political experience. Every Sunday Reagan was expected to make a public appearance at a different one of GEs 139 plants where he made speeches on government. In 1964 Reagan campaigned for Republican Barry Goldwater.

His campaigning didnt get Goldwater into office but it did catch the attention of many conservatives who then urged Reagan to run for governor of California. At first he refused and said that if he could find a better candidate that he would campaign for them as hard as he had for Barry. For six months Reagan traveled all through California giving speeches and talking to the people to find out what kind of person they wanted as their governor. After many of the people that heard his speeches also suggested that he run, Reagan realized that he happened to be just the kind of person the people wanted. On January 4 th, 1966 Reagan announced on a television broadcast that he intended to try for the Republican nomination for governor.

After defeating George Christopher in the Republican primary he was up against the incumbent Pat Brown, a liberal Democrat running for his third term as governor. On Election Day he beat Brown by a margin of 58 percent to 42 percent and was elected the 33 rd governor of California. In 1970 he was elected to a second term over his opponent Jesse Unruh, 53 percent to 45 percent. As Governor, Reagan signed a welfare-reform bill in 1971, restored order on rioting college campuses and issued temporary tax rebates in 1969 and 1973 that gave more than $ 5 billion back to the taxpayers. Many people wanted him to run for a third term in 1974 but after 8 years as governor he had accomplished all that he had wanted to at the state level. In 1976 Reagan campaigned for President Ford.

After Ford lost to Jimmy Carter, Reagan's supporters began urging him to run for president in 1980. He decided to run. If he won he would be turning 70 years old shortly after he was elected and would be the oldest president in history. He won the Republican primary campaign over George Bush and chose him as his vice president. They ran against Jimmy Carter and his Vice President Walter Mondale and the independent candidate John B. Anderson.

Reagan and Bush won with 489 electoral votes to Carters 49 and 50. 9 % popular vote over Carters 41. 2 %. Americans had elected Reagan to fix the problems of double-digit inflation, high unemployment and high interest rates. In 1981 president Reagan appointed the following people to his cabinet: Secretary of State - Alexander M. Haig, Jr. (1981 - 1982), George P. Shultz (1982 - 1989); Secretary of the Treasury - Donald T.

Regan (1981 - 1985); Attorney General - William French Smith (1981 - 1985); Secretary of Defense - Caspar W. Weinberger (1981 - 1987); Secretary of the Interior - James G. Watt (1981 - 1983), William P. Clark (1983 - 1985); Secretary of Agriculture - John R.

Block (1981 - 1986); Secretary of Commerce - Malcolm Baldridge, Jr. (1981 - 1987); Secretary of Labor - Raymond J. Donovan (1981 - 1985); Secretary of Health and Human Services - Richard S. Schweiker (1981 - 1983), Margaret M. Heckler (1983 - 1985); Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Samuel R. Pierce, Jr. (1981 - 1989); Secretary of Transportation Andrew L. Lewis, Jr. (1981 - 1983), Elizabeth H.

Dole (1983 - 1987); Secretary of Energy James B. Edwards (1981 - 1982), Donald P. Hotel (1982 - 1985); and Secretary of Education Terror H. Bell (1981 - 1985). In February, 1981, Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart announced that he was retiring and as Reagan had pledged to do in his campaign, he appointed the first woman, Sandra Day OConnor, to the Supreme Court.

His other Supreme Court appointments include William Rehnquist to Chief Justice (1981 -promoted from associate justice), Antonin Scalia (1986), Robert Bork (1987 -rejected by Senate), Douglas Ginsburg (1987 -withdrawn), and Anthony M. Kennedy (1988). On March 30 th, 1981, less than 100 days after being elected to his first term, Reagan and several of his staff were shot by John Hinckley Jr. who later said that he was trying to impress actress Jodie Foster by killing the president. Always the optimist, Reagan jokingly told his wife Nancy Honey, I forgot to duck. The 1981 Reagan's tax cuts were the largest in history.

Inflation dropped, but the nation fell into a deep slump that forced a tax increase -- also the largest ever at the time. Unemployment was on the rise due to Reagan's heavily criticized fiscal theories labeled Reaganomics, which focused more on tax cuts and increased military spending than on reducing the national debt, but by early 1983 the economy was moving forward at a healthy rate which would last through the remainder of Reagan's eight years in office. In 1984 Reagan was re-elected over Walter Mondale becoming, at 73, the oldest person to be elected president. His campaign ads proclaimed, "It's morning again in America, " and voters believed it. Reagan won 49 of 50 states (all but Minnesota, Mondale's home state). He had 523 electoral votes to Mondale's 13 and 59 % of the popular vote.

In his second term he appointed the following new people to his cabinet: Secretary of the Treasury - James A. Baker III (1985 - 1988), Nicholas F. Brady (1988 - 1989); Attorney General - Edwin P. Meese III (1985 - 1988), Richard L. Thornburg h (1988 - 1989); Secretary of Defense - Frank C. Carlucci III (1987 - 1989); Secretary of the Interior - Donald P.

Hotel (1985 - 1989); Secretary of Agriculture - Richard E. Long (1986 - 1989); Secretary of Commerce - C. William Verity (1987 - 1989); Secretary of Labor - William E. Brock III (1985 - 1987), Ann Dore McLaughlin (1987 - 1989); Secretary of Health and Human Services - Otis R.

Bowen (1985 - 1989); Secretary of Transportation James H. Bradley IV (1987 - 1989); Secretary of Energy John S. Herrington (1985 - 1989); and Secretary of Education William J. Bennett (1985 - 1988), Lauro Cavazos (1988 - 1989). Reagan's first term was defined by economic issues, his second was defined by his efforts to end the Cold War.

In his second term, Reagan set about drastically cutting taxes and government spending while building up the country's military. He gained a lot of critics among Americans with lower incomes when he slashed social programs like Aid to Families with Dependent Children, school lunches and subsidized housing. The defense buildup was a key part of the attempt to stare down what Reagan called the "evil empire" -- the Soviet Union. While Reagan cut social programs, he dramatically increased defense spending 35 percent for the largest-ever peacetime buildup thinking that the way to prevent a nuclear war was to have more weapons than the enemy -- in this case the Soviet Union.

He also invested in his Strategic Defense Initiative, which would supposedly deflect incoming missiles with shields in space. Scientists scoffed the idea, calling it "Star Wars, " but Reagan insisted on research. The federal deficit ballooned under Reagan's administration, a condition Reagan blamed on Congress for not doing enough to cut federal spending. The war on drugs was declared during Reagan's presidency, as well as the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 compensating Japanese Americans for their mistreatment during WWII.

Reagan also increased funding for HIV/Aids research substantially through his years in office. Reagan sent Marines into Lebanon as peacekeepers, and in 1983, the peacekeepers themselves were attacked. (When Reagan left office in 1988, extremists still held Americans hostage in Lebanon. ) Also in 1983, on October 25 th American troops were called on to stop a communist takeover on the Caribbean island of Grenada which critics claimed was a risky overreaction. In 1986, Reagan ordered a bombing raid on Libya after evidence emerged that Libyan terrorists attacked U. S.

soldiers at a West Berlin nightclub. He also moved his anti-communist battle into Central America, where he sent arms and advisers to stop the Soviet Union's aid to the government in Nicaragua and rebels in El Salvador. It was Reagan's push south, combined with his management style of leaving policy details to advisers, that led to the scandal of his career. The Iran-Contra Affair (also known as "Iran gate") was a mid- 1980 s political scandal in the United States. President Ronald Reagan's administration sold arms to Iran, a declared enemy. At the time, American hostages were being held in Lebanon and the US government claimed that using the arms would influence Iran to release those hostages.

The U. S. gave proceeds from the sale to the Contras, anti-Communist guerrillas which had been terrorizing the government of Nicaragua. Both the sale of weapons and the funding of the Contras violated administration policy as well as legislation passed by Congress, which had barred further Contra funding. Reagan had firmly denied he would ever trade arms for hostages, and said after the Iran-Contra scandal that he never knew of distribution of funds to the Contras or even that excess funds existed. In 1989, after the inauguration of George H.

W. Bush as president, Ronald Reagan returned to his home in Bel-Air, Los Angeles, California. He began writing his autobiography and spent a lot of his time riding his horses, target shooting, playing golf, and working on his ranch. After leaving the presidency Reagan became an official member of Bel-Air Presbyterian church and stated that he considered himself a born-again Christian. Also, shortly after leaving office, Reagan was criticized for pocketing an estimated $ 2 million for two brief speeches as the guest of the Fujisankei Communications Group in Japan. He also lived long enough to hear the public criticize key points of his administration, including the high federal deficit, the Iran-Contra scandal and even whether the massive defense build-up made any difference in quickening the Soviet Union's downfall.

In a CNN report on Ronald Reagan they stated Historians will no doubt continue to debate the effectiveness of Reagan's policies, but few will dispute the patriotism and personal charm of one of America's most popular presidents. In 1992, Reagan was officially diagnosed with Alzheimers disease. He informed the nation of his condition himself on November 5, 1994 in the form of a personal letter. In his letter he wrote "Whatever else history may say about me when I'm gone, " he said, "I hope it will record that I appealed to your best hopes, not your worst fears, to your confidence rather than your doubts When the Lord calls me home, whenever that day may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life.

I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead. " Reagan died at his home in Los Angeles on June 5, 2004 at 1: 09 PM of pneumonia, a complication of Alzheimers. He was given a full presidential funeral on June 9 th, the first since Lyndon Johnson and was buried on June 11 th after his national service at sunset in a private service at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. Reagan holds the record for the longest-living president in history at ninety-three years.
