The Joy Luck Club is a movie by Wayne Wang based on a book by Amy Tan. The movie begins with a short narrative which is simply the gist of the movie. It speaks of how a woman bought a goose which soon becomes a swan. This woman aspired to go to America and have a daughter. This daughter was to be very happy, fluent in English, and swallowing more happiness than sorrow. The woman sailed across the ocean on the swan from a great distance, but when she arrived in America they took away her swan and all she had left of the beautiful bird was a simple feather.

This feather represented all the womans hopes and dreams, and it had come from a great distance. But now the woman was old and frail, and her daughter spoke fluent English and drank more soda than sorrow. The woman wished to give her daughter the feather and explain what it meant but now it is too late, because all this time she wanted to speak this to her daughter in perfect English. This narrative speaks of the womans hopes and dreams; this is the main idea of the movie.

The movie is about 4 mothers born and raised in China and their relationships with their daughters that have been raised in America. Through flashbacks the movie shows the history of the mothers and daughters, and how they have come to an understanding with each other. By watching this movie about mothers and daughters and their relationships, I have been inspired me to look to my mothers and fathers wishes for me. To look to my parents wishes for me, I decided to ask them about their history before they had me.

It turned out that my parents had gone through many life defining moments before they had me. I already knew that my parents had planned to have three children, but I believed that my elder brother, my younger sister, and I were those three. It turned out that if not for the two miscarriages my mother had before she had my older brother, I would not be alive today. I first thought about how that could have affected me, but then I realized that this must have affected both my parents as well. I thought of how it could have felt for my parents to try to have children and fail, this brought tears to my eyes.

As I thought this I remembered one of the mothers and her daughter. It was the mother that had 2 twins but left them in China so she would not die near them. But she survived and came to America, where she had another daughter. This daughter relates to me because if the mother had the strength to survive and keep her babies then the daughter might not have existed.

That is just but one of the life defining moments my parents had faced before they had me, and it brought me to realize that my parents did not have perfect lives and I was not the only one with problems. While watching the movie I realized that all the mothers had major lessons they wished their daughters to learn. This inspired me to learn what major lessons my parents wished for me to learn. AS inspired as I was I did not want to just ask my parents of major lessons they wished for me to learn. Therefore, I used a similar method Amy Tang used, but in a different way. I asked my parents simple questions, and from these I inferred as to what major lessons they want me to learn.

I have come to the conclusion that the major lessons my parents would wish for me to learn would to be honest, hard-working, to be confident, to be proud but humble at the same time, to always stand for what is right, and lastly they would never want me to put myself below someone else. In the story there was a daughter that did not know of one of the lessons her mother wished for her to learn. It was not to put herself under others. She had found a great husband that loved her, but she would never speak of what she wanted, she would always put herself under her husband. Because of this the husband had divorced her. After this her mother taught her what she had been trying to teach her all this time, and the daughter put herself where she belonged, and then became the wife to the same man.

Those are just some examples of major lessons my parents want me to learn, and I would not be able to have thought about and explored them if it were not for the inspiration I have received from this movie. While watching the movie I came to the thought that it was only about the expectations of the mothers toward their daughters. But after watching through the entire movie I came to the realization that it was not only about their expectations, but their hopes and dreams for their daughters. This inspired me to learn my parents hopes and dreams for me.

I learned that my parents have many hopes and dreams for me, and that they could only hope the most for me. I have learned that my parents have many hopes and dreams for me, to become a great doctor, do very good in school, get an A on this essay, grow tall, and many more, these are but only some of their many hopes for me. There is a similar relationship between one of the groups of mother and daughter. The daughter thinks that her mothers hopes are her expectations.

She always thinks that there is no pleasing her mother, but when she finally says this to her mother, her mother tells her she is pleased with her, and says that those were here hopes, and that there is nothing wrong with hope. Those are some of my parents hopes and dreams for me, but they are not their expectations. I know that their expectations would have to do with me doing my best and always giving all my effort, but these are not their hopes and dreams. If I had not watched this movie I might have never realized the difference between my parents hopes and dreams for me, and their expectations. This experience of looking to my parents hopes, dreams, and expectations of me has brought me to a new understanding of their lives, and my own. I now understand that I am not the only one that faces problems in my life.

I have also come to realization that my parents can only hope the best for me. Lastly I have come to the realization that my parents expectations and dreams for me are very high, because they dont want me to go through anything that could hurt me. I believe that The Joy Luck Club; the movie and the book, are both very inspiring and full of thought. They bring many views of life from many different perspectives, and the author tells the reader of the extremely complex relationship between a mother and her daughter in such a way that she never says anything about it, but implies the information through the action of the characters.

With those tools Wayne Wang directs a movie based on Amy Tangs book that has inspired many people including myself to look to my parents wishes for ourselves.
